He later was an engineer for Boeing and died in September 2009.

A 1974 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Sestak served in the Navy for 31 years, earning his master's and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. As deputy chief of Navy operations, he held the rank of three-star vice admiral, but retired with the rank of two-star rear admiral because he hadn't held his vice admiralty rank for the required three years. Under President Bill Clinton, he served as director of defense policy for the National Security Council. After 9/11, in President George W. Bush's administration, he headed the Navy's anti-terror think tank, Deep Blue. Later, he commanded the USS George Washington aircraft carrier group, an armada of 30 ships and 15,000 troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. In his last assignment for the Pentagon, he oversaw the Navy's $70 billion warfare budget as deputy chief of naval operations.
