Joe and Susan were both on assignment with a U.S. delegation in Russia, where they worked in Moscow, what was then Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) and the coastal city of Sochi. He proposed to her two days later, in the rain, just as the ship they were on returned to Sochi. She told him then that she didn't know him well enough to marry him, but did marry him eight years later, on Aug. 22, 1998.
Were either Joe Sestak or Susan Clark-Sestak married before?
No.
Do the Sestaks have children?
They have a 9-year-old daughter, Alexandra. In 2005, toward the end of his stint as deputy chief of naval operations, their daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer. He was reassigned at the time and retired at the end of the year to be with his daughter, who, after a tough battle, is now in remission.
