White House to Get Solar Panels Above Obamas' Living Quarters

Here comes the sun: The most famous house in America is going solar -- again.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu said Tuesday the White House is getting solar panels atop the first family's living quarters to heat water and provide some electricity. The cost of the project is not clear, but Chu said the panels should be installed by next spring, the Associated Press reported.

Way back in the late 1970s, President Jimmy Carter had a $35,000 solar water-heating system for West Wing offices. And President Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush, put in a solar system to power a maintenance building and parts of the executive mansion, as well as bring heat to the White House pool.

Obama, who has made use of alternative energy a central plank of his environmental policy, has been under pressure to lead by example. In September, global warning activists, disappointed by the failure of the cap-and-trade bill, hauled one of Carter's solar panels from Maine to Washington (the system was removed in 1986, during Ronald Reagan's stay at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.) as a way of dramatizing the urgency of the issue. On Tuesday, they got their answer.

The solar industry was also pleased. "Putting solar on the roof the nation's most important real estate is a powerful symbol calling on all Americans to rethink how we generate electricity," Solar Energy Industries Association President Rhone Resch told the AP.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. $35,000 in the 70's to only heat water in a wing of OFFICES! That is ludicrous. This solar system was for the office wing. What does one use hot water for in offices? No showers, no baths, no cooking, just washing their hands! This was typical of the Carter administration. No wonder our economy went down the toilet while he was in office.

Americans would save more money improving their houses insulation level and buying high E windows. Also, a small wind turbine attached to the house in most areas would give back a higher electric level. Solar is not a profitable option in many states.

We make Solar panels in Michigan, so that is going to create jobs and at the same time save money for tax payers. And of course the President isn't expected to pay for the solar panels. Unless we get another President like Reagan in the WH that had the paels removed, they should last for a very long time.

Except that after our health insurance climbs another 9%,property taxes increase, the price of food goes up,along with every other bill, and our salaries stay the same, nobody here can afford to buy all the solar panels that you are making-Maybe our gestapo president will also MANDATE us to buy them for the good of all! Please let's not give Congress anymore ideas to create another pork laden 1500 page bill that they vote without reading!!!

i'll applaud obama for doing this, but it's too bad it took the negative publicity from his earlier refusal to get him to do so

Obama, and his wife, bought solar panels for the WH out of their pocket? Yeah right...something else WE, the taxpayer, provided for THEM.

It's not real difficult to "lead by example" or commit to green energy if doing so with taxpayer dollars.

Bravo! We need to sever the reliance on foreign oil for our survival. Every step we take important, but this speaks volumes. We all, as Americans, need to get on board with alternative energy sources like solar. And as far as cost goes, I would rather pay for a step towards securing our future than to save the inflated salaries of fat cats. At least we can see where this money went.
