Another Nevada Republican Comes Out for Harry Reid

For the second time in two days, a prominent state Republican has announced support for Harry Reid in the race for Senate in Nevada.

Former First Lady Dema Guinn said in a statement Friday that she is endorsing Reid because of "his unwavering support for vital education programs" begun by her late husband, the popular GOP Gov. Kenny Guinn.

On Thursday, Nevada's Senate Minority Leader, Republican Bill Raggio, made headlines when he said he would back Reid, describing his GOP opponent Sharron Angle as "ineffective."

Dema Guinn thanked Nevadans for their support following her husband's unexpected death in July, saying it has changed her outlook on life, KVVU-TV reported. Kenny Guinn, 73, died after falling off the roof of his home.

"These new perspectives give you great resolve to stand up for things you may have once ignored or speak out on issues on which you may have remained silent in the past," Guinn wrote.

She said Reid is the candidate who will continue Kenny Guinn's push for improved education, which he believed was "the single most important element to a successful life, vibrant state and strong economy."

"That is why I am supporting Senator Harry Reid for reelection," she wrote.

In a statement, Reid expressed appreciation for the former first lady's endorsement.

"I am deeply honored to have the support of Dema Guinn, a woman I greatly respect not only for her commitment to the state of Nevada, but for her love of her late husband and my friend, Governor Kenny Guinn. Dema's strength over these past few months has been inspiring to all Nevadans who had so much respect for Kenny, and all the great things he and his wife did for our state," the Senate Majority leader said.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Why should Americans worry about the imagined threat of sharia law in imagined towns in Texas(see Sharron Angle's statement re:Franklin Texas)when we face the REAL threat of electing politicians who would enact laws that have us live under Sharron law? IF Harry Reid was a better representative and senator...Sharron Angle wouldn't even be within 15 points of a victory...and shouldn't

Any Republican coming out for Mr. Reid is not a Republican or a conservative. Incidently, Mr. Quinn is deceased. Who knows if he would have done the same thing. This is the wife of the late Mr. Quinn. Many times the spouses are not of the same belief's that the other spouse is.

It's refreshing to see people judge an issue rather than a party.
