Wronged Wife of Chilean Miner Out-Classes Jenny Sanford

Marta Salinas, the Chilean miner's wife who stayed home to watch her husband Yonni Barrios' miraculous rescue on TV (so he could greet his mistress), out-classed Jenny Sanford in the cheated-on-wife category. Senora Salinas' husband was the 21st in the line of men who one by one came up a straw tube Wednesday to a very different world than the one they tunneled away from last August.
Television crews, book agents, long lost family members and a watching world were there to greet them. Their extraordinary grace after spending more than two months trapped half a mile underground (the first 17 days with no contact from above), and the order, mutual trust, cooperation and respect they apparently maintained among themselves in their cavern, epitomized the complete civilized inverse of Lord of the Flies social behavior.
Apparently that dignity extended to their families. Barrios' wife of 28 years told the New York Times, "He has another companion," and added, "I'm happy for him, and if he remakes his life, good for him."
When the (still) sitting governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford, cheated on his (now ex-) wife last year with an Argentine beauty, he said his TMI mea culpas alone. Mrs. Sanford stayed off the public stage and uppity women considered her high road quite fitting. (Of course, eventually Jenny had her magazine layout, wrote her book and traded in her children's daddy. The temptations of fame are as deep as a mine.)
Nonetheless, more than one of my women friends preferred Jenny Sanford's measured distance to seeing Silda Wall go to the wall to support her husband in 2008 when, after the FBI caught him with a prostitute, Eliot Spitzer resigned as governor of New York. (Coincidentally, the reconstituted cable news anchor's new prime-time program on CNN was bumped by nonstop miner rescue coverage).
Maybe the real difference in these wives' behavior toward their indiscreet husbands is that Yonni Barrios could have died, while the two others spouses' peril was political.
Of course, now that the 32 Chilean and one Bolivian men are public figures, they have permanently exited their mineworkers' existence. Book and movie agents bearing gift baskets will not wait for Copiapo's Camp Hope satellite trucks to disperse before they sign up the diarist, the athlete, the oldest, the youngest, and the expectant father. ("Please don't treat us as stars," rescued miner Mario Sepúlveda said behind his new Oakleys.) Where ever this combined episode of "Lost" and "Survivor" takes each man, it seems certain that some will continue their path of decorum and others will act less stately under the glare of celebrity.
Who knows? After their first wave of publicity and national heroism, maybe some will turn to public office. I wonder where their wives, or mistresses, will stand then?

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. "Wronged Wife of Chilean Miner Out-Classes Jenny Sanford" Maybe author Bonnie Goldstein did not write the title of this article, but the comparison of two victims (of cheating spouses) is odious. Neither woman sought the attention she received and grading their reactions to public embarassment and humiliation reveals more about the author than she may realize.

When you give up 20 something years (quarter century) of your life to someone, it's not easy when they suddenly decide to find someone else. My advice to the wife, per any Chilean laws, do not divorce him until he reaps the monetary benefits he may gain from his experiences. And go for your due!

How undignified! The wife is perfectly aware of the benefits she has been reaping and will reap. As a matter of fact, she has been getting his salary and contributions all along and explicity said she will keep what belongs to her. You can see her personality is not the one of an angel and if she left her "years ago" to live with this other woman, she most likely deserves it. Barrios could not afford a divorce, but now that will be resoved.

Divorce has been legal in Chile since President Ricardo Lagos signed the bill authorizing it on 7 May 2004. It is still not easy to do, and can take one or three years depending on circumstances.

MARTA SALINAS INDEED IS A CLASSY LADY ! BEING EXCEPTIONALLY INTELLIGENT, SHE KNOWS WHEN TO REMAIN AND WHEN TO BACK OFF. THIS LADY IS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST ADMIRTED OF ALL PERSONS CONCERNING THIS SITUATION, AND WILL INDEED WALK AWAY FROM IT ALL WITH HALF OF EVERYTHING HER HUSBAND HAD. THE HUSBAND THEN WILL HAVE TO SHARE HIS HALF WITH THE MISTRESS HE HAS HANGING ON HIS ARM.

Marta Salinas is truly a lady, but still Yonni's wife.....and should be entitled to half of anything he makes on any of the deals that come out of this experience. Then she can give him her blessings to go live with his mistress while she comfortable goes on with her life.

Class? Grace? Decorum? Why should anyone (male or female) remain silent and kind after their spouse has betrayed them in the worst way possible. I've never been in such a relationship, and really don't want to hear about other people's sex/love lives. However I wouldn't praise (or condemn) the spouse who either quietly accepts their cheating spouse's behavior or takes them to the cleaners and publicly humiliates them (or rather allows the light to shin on the cheater's humiliating behavior). The filandering spouse is the one who is wrong.....period. The spouse, as long as they aren't committing crimes, is entitled to behave however they wish. Judging THEM, for better or worse, is the sport of paparazzi, blogging pointless fools, and those jealous of even the negative spotlight. And it most certainly isn't journalism of any ilk.

It is interesting how much more dignified and "classy", and humble the peoples of other countries are. These cheaters certainly weren't "classy" and somehow in many countries it is so easily accepted when husband's cheat or have multiple women. It is also interesting how more women in other countries show dignity and class (with the exception of Hilary Clinton, who, even in the face of the entire world watching and judging her and his every move and every word) than in this country. I do hope, however, that the women in Chile who were being cheated on, will be entitled to their fair share for themselves and the welfare of their children ... and let the cheaters go to their mistresses. Good riddance to bad rubbish! I agree these women were entitled to react to their husband's infidelity with anger, rudeness, feeling vengeful, etc. It will be interesting what happens with the other 5 or so men who also had mistresses. I'm sure we'll all find out when the movie comes out, LOL.

Comments Chuck Colson about the way the miners treated each other with such respect and as the reporter Goldstein put it the group outcome was the complete opposite of "Lord of the Flies." Under the cloud of eminent death, (and I paraphrase Colson) " This is a slap in the face to Darwinianslike Steven Hawkings' theory of the dominate gene, or survival of the fittest." Incidentally, once again, our Creator God; the God of Jesus Christ; the one to whom the miners were praying,(most with were Catholic), must be the one that saved them since they were praying to Him. Men like Senor Barrios, will have to answer for their unfaithfulness, but Senora Barrios kept her part of the marriage contract, keeping herself only unto her husband and forsaking all others.
