Campaign Ads Take Nastier, More Personal Turn in Midterms

They say all's fair in love and politics.

Well, in politics these days, it's also pretty ugly.

Not only is spending on ads hitting record levels, but personal attacks seem to be reaching all-time highs for nastiness.

Last week in Colorado we've seen President Obama portrayed as a terrorist, illegal immigrant, gambler and homosexual all in the same billboard in Grand Junction, with the title "Vote DemocRAT."

Then there's the online ad for Amendment 62, the so-called "personhood" amendment that would grant rights to "every human being from the beginning of the biological development of that human being." That two-minute video attributes "the decline of America" to Colorado's 1967 approval of abortion to save a mother's life or in cases of rape or incest. At one point, Obama's face appears, morphing from the grim reaper, with the words "Then the Angel of Death arrived and Hell followed with him." As ominous music plays in the background, the video notes, "He took over banks, industry, and finally, our health care." The video from Personhood USA is titled "The Prolife Tea Party Vote."

In Orlando, Fla., Rep. Alan Grayson, a Democrat, stoops to equal depths with his "Taliban Dan" ad, in which he takes a few words of Republican opponent Daniel Webster entirely out of context. At least Grayson got called out by Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show" -- and in plenty of other media, too. He deserves it.

Those are just a few examples.

If you're thinking that there's a heavy dose of negativity in the 2010 election cycle, it isn't your imagination. An analysis of television advertising by the Wesleyan Media Project released last week indicated a higher volume of ads in 2010 compared with 2008; while the proportion of attack ads is the same, this year's attacks are more personal, said Erika Franklin Fowler, assistant professor of government at Wesleyan and director of the Media Project. Personal attacks account for 20 percent of negative ads, compared with 14 percent in 2008.

There is a bit of good news, though, that may be overlooked in the nastiness.

"Certainly there are more negative ads on the airwaves this cycle, but there also more positive ads out there, too," Fowler said.

Perhaps more campaigns should consider ads like Iowa GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley's, which point out his use of new technology to communicate with constituents.

"I heard Chuck Grassley has a . . . Twitter," one woman says.

"Oh, can it be cured?" another woman asks.

Although Grassley's tweets may sometimes be lacking in spelling and grammar, the ad is a refreshing interlude in an otherwise unpleasant campaign season.

Another example: Take a look at this VoteVets.org ad for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, featuring a young man walking along a highway as the story is told of Reid overcoming life's obstacles.

In a season of vitriol, a sweet story offers a small antidote to the political ugliness.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Democrats became the majority in the house on 01/2007 and in 01/2009 they controlled all three branches of the legislature. In 2007 they did not have a veto proof majority in the house. In 2001 the federal budget had a surplus of 127.3 billion dollars and in 2009 there was a deficit of 1.4 trillion dollars.Budgets are passed a year in advance unless there is gridlock then we get continuing resolution and increasing of the debt ceiling.Mike Oxley(R) was head of the House banking committee until 01/2007.This is the committee that oversaw Fannie and Freddy. These facts may be inconvenient for spinmiesters but they are facts.

Despite all the slick ads and ugly insults, when you finally get a Republican to actually state what they would do to fix the economic disaster their party created, all they can do is mouth the same tired old Supply Side Economic policies from 30 years ago when people listened to 8 Track Tapes.

It's why politics is often called "the sport of kings". Only the strong survive.

The Tea Party Abortion video was sooooooo offensive!! I can't believe they made Obama look like some creepy "angel of death," and blamed all of the country's former problems on him. It makes me sick. I support Obama, but I am also 100% pro-life. It's ridiculous what people do to make their opponents look bad. Just because someone doesn't support one of your beliefs, it doesn't allow you to call them "angel of death" or make them look like the joker. That was probably one of the most offensive videos I have ever seen.

That was NOT a Tea Party movement ad. That ad was put out there put by "Personhood." You had the exact reaction they want. It is easy to believe that "Personhood" could be a bunch of liberals or leftists making a despicable ad that everyone could hate and blame on conservatives. Easily done wasn't it? hstryvogue

I loved the video as it truly depicts who this man is and the destruction that his devastating policies will have on our country. The wow factor of this video may be just exactly what this country needs in order to snap out of the coma that we are in.

Re: Amendment 62 What an ad!!!!! Now this is "Madison Avenue' at it's best. After I saw the ad I wanted to vote! I didn't want to be one of those people that are underestimated! I wanted to show the government what I could do! I wanted to watch it again! I, I, I, ..... wait a minute. I have no issue with abortion! I'm not sure I agree with the amendment! I'm not sure of the logistics of a cell being a person! But I LOVED THAT AD!!!!!!!! And I want that team to make a commercial ASAP to sell my house, LOL!

Here's something to munch on for a while, since we're politicking. Ever notice how each political party says they're right and the other one is wrong? Ever notice that both sides (though Republicans are more apt to do it, truthfully) beat the Constitutional drum of Constitution this and Constitution that and that, if they had their way, there would be only ONE party since the other one is always wrong? Uh... Yeah. Exactly. We call that ANARCHY, not two-party democracy, folks. The whole reason for having two parties is so neither one has too much power. So shut the heck up, bitching about the other party when, if there wasn't one, you'd have NO democracy! And one more thing. The original convention was not to have a two-party democracy AT ALL! Just a plain and simple set of rules for the federal government. But some of the same authors of THAT convention were brought back together to fix other parts of it and ended up throwing it out altogether to come up with the Constitution we now wave around. Anyway, bon appetite.

I have to assume that the reason we have fewer positive statements about our politicians in their ads is that there must not be much positive that they can say about themselves. Sad, isn't it!
