Democrat Jack Conway has pulled within five points of Republican Rand Paul in Kentucky's Senate race, according to a new Rasmussen Reports survey, the closest he has come yet in any of the 13 match-ups the pollster has done between the pair since the beginning of the year.

Paul is leading Conway by 47 percent to 42 percent with 4 percent preferring some other candidate and 7 percent undecided, according to the poll conducted Oct. 18. The margin of error is 4.5 points. In its Sept. 29 poll, Rasmussen had Paul ahead by 49 percent to 38 percent.

Paul has led in the majority of surveys conducted since mid-August by other pollsters by five points or more, and in some cases by double-digits, although some polls showed the pair within three points or less of each other.

Jack Conway and Rand PaulConway has taken aim at a pile of past statements by Paul, reflecting the Republican's Tea Party beliefs, and 44 percent of those surveyed by Rasmussen said they considered Paul's views to be "extreme," compared to 39 percent who said they were "mainstream." Eighteen percent were undecided.

Forty-six percent say Conway's views are mainstream, 40 percent call them extreme and 14 percent are undecided.

Paul is seen favorably by 51 percent of voters and unfavorably by 45 percent, with 4 percent not sure. Conway is regarded favorably by 50 percent and unfavorably by 48 percent, with 3 percent not sure.

Conway still lags Paul in the amount of support each gets from their own parties. Paul is backed by 78 percent of Republicans, compared to Conway's support from 69 percent of Democrats. Paul is attracting 23 percent of Democratic votes and has a double-digit lead among unaffiliated voters although one-fifth of them are undecided.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Was the Aqua Buddah ad really that bad? I see Republicans calling Democrats Communists, Socialists, Terrorists, un-American, unpatriotic, the "blame America first crowd", and other terrible insults that are incapable of proof or disproof. Conservatives accuse the President of being a foreigner, a Muslim, a criminal who usurped the Presidency, a racist, and much worse. But Conway runs an ad that is true, that accuses Paul of not being quite truthful when he wears his religion for all the electorate to see, and Conway is condemned for bringing up stale information. The President is still attacked for having coffee with William Ayers years ago, a man who, himself, is attacked for opinions he held 40 years ago. Politics ain't pretty. Conway gave the voters information. What they do with it is their business. But Republicans need to quit getting an attack of the vapors everytime someone gives them a taste of their own medicine. And Conway...don't retreat--reload!

So radical is Rand Paul that if elected to the Senate he would annex Lexington. Not a good idea either. Jack Conway is the better man and will best represent us in Kentucky.

I read a comment that Jack Conway has done a good job,Bull. The state of Kentucky has went from a one billion surplus to a three and half billion deficit under our governor and Conway administration.I guess in Kentucky when you break the state that makes you great or has that comment stated job well done Mr.Conway.When are you people going to wake up this country is fourteen trillion in the hole and going deeper every day. When you don,t pay the collector,s come. Then kick you out someday and at the rate this country is going it could be sooner than later.

I don't know what everyone got so excited about Conway’s attack on Rand Paul. In my youth, I was a member of a secret organization and I am still a member of an organization with secrets, not the same one but a grownup version. I have been proud to be a Mason for over 24 years. I am also proud to say that I support Rand Paul for the Senatorial Seat being vacated by Senator Jim Bunning. For just a moment, let us realize that this is a political battle and some people are quite adept at slinging mud, even when there isn't any. In those times, some folks even start scooping that stuff that they find under the outhouse seat, but there is one fact they do forget. “When they start resorting to that kind of scooping, their hands are gonna smell awful and that kind of stench doesn't wear off!”

not sure who the polls asked gut its gotten around just about everywhere that Conway has been exposed as making up way too many facts. I see his support fading not gaining.

Clearly most of the comments are from the same people who elected Obama...which is a shame - you are the ones who waned change (without knowing what the change would be) - get your head out of the sand before everything is ran by the government...of course, if that is what you prefer (you won't when it happens) then move to a different country. I do recommend you move to a different country for a couple of years - truly take up residency and not use the "I'm a USA citizen" card during that time - just live like the natives (housing, education, medical provisions, etc.)...THEN come back and make an educated vote. Dust off your history books and comprehend the difference in platforms of the two main parties...Dems are in favor of government control and Reps are not. Just be glad we currently live in a free country! And just be sure to vote!

The tea party candidates are very embarassing. Their supporters are clueless. Hannity is a liar.
