Military to Start Accepting Gay Recruits, Judge Keeps DADT Injunction

Military recruiters have been directed to start signing up gay men and lesbians who apply for the armed forces -- and also to regard the don't ask, don't tell law as suspended until the fate of the controversial policy is settled by the courts or Congress.

Meanwhile, a federal judge who earlier found don't ask, don't tell to be unconstitutional on Tuesday rejected the government's request to stay her order stopping enforcement of the policy while her ruling is appealed, Politico reported.

Top level guidance has gone out giving the go-ahead for acceptance of gay recruits, but also cautioning that the moratorium on the ban on openly gay service members could be lifted at anytime, a Defense Department spokeswoman told the AP and other news agencies Tuesday.

Army recruiterU.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips ordered the military last week to stop enforcing the Clinton-era law, which requires gays to keep their sexual orientation private with the promise that they will not be grilled by officers about their personal lives. The government has appealed and asked for a stay of the order, even though President Obama wants to do away with don't ask, don't tell.

On Monday, Phillips said she had decided tentatively "to deny the application for a stay" and made it official on Tuesday. The Justice Department is expected to take its appeal to a higher court.

Obama prefers the legislative route. The U.S. House has already voted to repeal the policy and the Senate could follow suit after the election. The president also wants to see a Pentagon report, due in December, on the impact of implementing the change. But he has vowed that the prohibition on gays in the military will end on his watch.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Since these are special people a platoon of gays could be created for them. Lets face it that have different needs based on their own admissions. After all we have special education classes in our public schools to accomodate people with special needs.

i servered on active duty for 4 years - i am sure there were many gays serving an board the ship (didnt allow females on combatants back then) but most kept it to themselves - it is a well know fact that AIDS is more prevelant in the homosexual community - every year military members under went physicals in which among other things we had blood drawn for a number of test including an AIDS test - well the one year the corpsman who was the one whose job it was to do the test popped positive for AIDS - his deviant lifestyle had got him infected with AIDS and every single day he risked the life of every single one of his shipmates - it would have been so easy to trip and fall and poke himself and poke the sailor and have blood transfer - yes straight people get AIDS but no where in the numbers that gays and drug users do - by being gay and being in the military he risked the lives of thousands of US Navy Sailors - nuff said -

I suppose those same Navy Sailors could have easily gotten AIDS from hookers as well. After all, everyone knows about sailors when they hit shore. To say that because a man is gay, he has Aids, is as ridiculous as anyone else who has the disease. nuff said.

To qoute a phrase often heard in political ad's, "I approve of this message." (the ruling) Hope the ruling sticks because loyal to country when you don't have equal rights shows their love of the USA and gives equal rights in a very major way.

I just dont get what all the hoopla is. Who cares what your sexual orientation is? If you want to serve your country I say go ahead. I respect your devotion and could really give a rats ass who you sleep with. How much more homophobic can our government get? I say keeping gays out the military is just as prejudicial as say keeping blacks out...or keeping jews out..or keeping catholics out....this is rediculous and I cannot believe that we are spending tax payer money even debating it.

Good morning, Thought for Today Romans 1:26 takes us further down the path of perversion, “For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.” Today, our society calls homosexuality a preference. God has always called it a perversion. The Bible refers to it not just as “a sin”, but as “an abomination”. Verses 26-27 tell us four truths about homosexuality: it’s not natural, not normal, not noble, and not neutral. First, it’s not natural, notice Paul’s phrases, “against nature” and “leaving the natural use”. Robert Kronemeyer writes, “Homosexuals are made, not born. From my 25 years’ experience as a clinical psychologist I firmly believe homosexuality is a learned response to early painful experiences, thus it can be unlearned…” Second, it’s not normal. Paul says the homosexual “burns in his lust”. His desire is not a normal sexual desire. It’s an appetite out -of-control and misdirected. Third, it’s not noble. Paul says, “men with men committing what is shameful”. It’s a deformity of God’s intended order. It violates the sexual identities God created. Fourth, it’s not neutral. Penalties come with perversions. Paul says, “receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.” There are consequences. AIDS is one of them, but there are more, not the least of which is a seared conscience. There are many gays who are anything but happy and gay. If you’re tempted by homosexual thoughts, or trapped in a gay lifestyle, God still loves you. Your sin is not the unpardonable sin. God is able to forgive you and set you free if you’ll repent and trust in Him. Blessings in Him "There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death" (Proverbs 14:12)

Well, it seems the founding fathers, who made provisions for the separation of church and state, did a smart thing. If they didn't, we might be ruled by religious types who quote bible passages from an era thousands of years ago. Hell, we might have become a country like Iran, where the religious body rules and quotes their bible all day long. Thank God America is the model for other countries to aspire to.

To any Gays or Lesbians signing up - There is still no PDA in uniform unless you are being greeted by a loved one at the airport after returning from a long deployment. Do not enlist under the pretense that you will be allowed to walk around a military installation in uniform while holding hands with your same sex partner. Heterosexuals have never been able to do it. Same rules apply to everyone. Know what you are enlisting for. In Basic Training, both Gays and Lesbians will get yelled at just like straight men and women do. They are not going to treat you "special" because you might have emotional issues.

I don't understand why "don't ask, don't tell" is considered to be a bad thing now. Back when President Clinton put it into action I understood it to be a good thing. A step forward. Yes, I can understand that it still required gays and lesbians to serve while staying in the closet as far as the military record. But, the way I see it what a person's sexual preference is in no one else's business. Hence the whole idea behind "don't ask, don't tell." Now, my point of view is that of a straight man but, I have a gay friend and I asked him why "D.A.D.T" is considered a bad thing now. He said he didn't get it either.

The don't ask, no tell law sounds good on it's surface. But, many ex-service people have sworn before congressional hearings that they were thorn out anyway. Many of the soldiers have stated that the military have secretly went through e-mails and letters of service people they suspected and have thrown them out based on that alone. There have been hundreds thrown out, and I don't believe these people openly said they were gay. So, the DADT law was either a sham, or not shared by all concerned. Besides, if DADT is a "step forward"...this is the next step.

I've been in the U.S. military for quite some time now; in combat zones and at many bases and installations in the U.S. and abroad. Have never been molested, attacked or felt threatened by anyone that I knew or suspected of being gay or bi-sexual. It just does not happen and if it does happen ,...which is extremly rare the guilty would be dealt with accordingly, UCMJ is a powerful tool. The only thing that I care about...... is that you do your job well, shoot straight and carry your own weight and respect your comrades and the citizens of the host country. Men and women in combat have a bond that most civilians will never understand, the last thing I care about is your sexual preferance, you respect me...... and I respect you...simple as that . Remember folks ........when the bullets are flying and all heeeeell is breaking loose, I don't care what you are ...or who you are,as long as we all go home in one piece. There are no gays in a fire-fight only service members doing their best to keep themselves alive and the guy or gal next to them alive !! Remember to Vote and vote often ... on Nov 2nd......Go RePubs/ and T-Party !!
