George Soros Donates $1 Million to Media Matters

Conservative critics have long accused the liberal activist group Media Matters of being propped up by George Soros. Well, now they're right, at least partly.

Soros, a billionaire philanthropist with a history of supporting liberal causes, has donated $1 million to Media Matters, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

The group said in a statement that it would use the money to boost its ongoing efforts to fact check the reporting of Fox News, and to hold the network's hosts accountable for their statements.

"Fox has transformed itself into a 24-7 G.O.P. attack machine, dividing Americans through fear-mongering and falsehoods and undermining the legitimacy of our government for partisan political ends," Media Matters said.

Soros, 80, said he hoped his money would be used "in an effort to more widely publicize the challenge Fox News poses to civil and informed discourse in our democracy."

Earlier this month, Soros told the Times he wasn't supporting Democratic candidates this election season because he is predicting big gains by Republicans.

"I don't believe in standing in the way of an avalanche," the financier said.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

And Fox news is more popular than all the others combined. And Americans decide for them selves what to watch. How is it that Soros finds it necessary to prop up the liberal outlets? Maybe because their failing liberal slant isn't swallowed by anyone except the dependent class.

He is not american. He donates to socialist supporting canidates. The only reason Obama talk about forgien contributions was to demonize business. Rules for raticals tell you not to argue issues but to demonize. Soro has funded this for years, he is a socialist he has to try and demonize fox news. They are the only one that does support the socialist agenda of the present adminstration.

So one rich guy supports a Liberal organization. That's one against how many from just the Chamber of Commerce alone? Please give me a break. Soros is an AMERICAN using his money for an American organization. And he made it public. I dare the Chamber of Commerce to do the same about the foreign governments and corporations giving millions to them to pass on to conservative candidates.

Now check your info people. Soros was not born here, and in 2004 contributed millions for anyone against G.W. Bush. Soros does have some good intentions, but he is more political than most politicians! He recently contributed millions to other political organizations, his interest is for big $$ and not much more.

Well said, JJ! And the fact that four of the potential Republican candidates are contributors to his "news" network kind of makes it a conflict of interest, does it not? Ethics mean nothing to the right-wing.
