Biden Says White House Willing to Deal With GOP on Tax Cuts

Vice President Biden opened the door a crack to the possibility of a deal with Republican on retaining Bush era tax cuts for some families making more than $250,000 annually.

In an interview Friday with Bloomberg Television, Biden said "we're open to speak to the Republicans, if they really mean it. If they're talking about deficit reduction, if they're willing to move. I think there's a possibility."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said earlier in the week that the GOP too would be ready to look for areas of agreement with the White House after the Nov. 2 mid-term election. But he reacted cautiously to Biden's opening. "I would like to believe that the vice president's comments suggest a real conversion. But given this administration's record, it's a real challenge to believe it's anything other than a pre-election attempt to distract voters from the administration's record -- and it's oft-stated plan to sock America's job creators with a massive new tax hike," McConnell said.

Vice President Joe Biden Until Friday, the White House steadfastly insisted the tax reductions, dating back to 2011 and 2003, should not be extended for individuals making more than $200,000 and families above $250,000. Keeping them would add hundreds of billions of dollars to the budget deficit as a consequence of lost revenue to the U.S. Treasury, the administration said.

Unless Congress takes action after the election, the tax relief will disappear for everyone in 2011. Biden seemed to be signal that President Obama would consider a threshold higher than $250,000 for keeping in place what he prefers to call a middle-class tax cut.

The vice president also appeared to hedge his bet on his predictions that Democrats will hold their majority in the U.S. House in the election. He told Bloomberg's Al Hunt that Democrats "will keep keep control of the Senate for certain, and I believe we'll keep control of the House." But he added the caveat that hundreds of million of dollars of third-party spending by undisclosed donors is having an impact on House contests. A lot of that money is going into advertising backing Republicans.

No deals!!! LET THE TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH EXPIRE!!!! It is the average joes that keep this country running evry day but the republicans refuse to even consider a cut in taxes for us. But for the wealthy it is give them evrything they want as they did during the eight years that they were in control. Now when it is the peopls turn to try to better their lives just a little the republicans are fighting tooth and nail!!! Why??? The AMERICAN PEOPLE want to know!!!!!!!!

Extending all the Bush tax cuts will cost $4 trillion over the next ten years. Extending even just the middle class tax cuts will cost $3 trillion. Republican spending cuts will save only $100 billion. So the fiscally responsible thing to do is to let all the tax cuts expire.

Sure. Then prices at the cash register and banks go up double digits. After that, big business will ship more jobs overseas to recover their extra expenses and unemployment will go up. Then, those lucky few who are still making mortgage payments will default because they've lost their jobs and the housing crisis will start all over again. You don't really think the big boys will say "aw, shucks I guess we'll have to pay" do ya? They will pass that expense onto US, and right now we can't afford it.

must not be cutting enough! Remeber That great ecoonmist now in the Whitehouse, said during the debates. Q: why would you raise the cap gains tax when it is producing more revenue at lower rate? and the answer " I do not care about the revenue it is a matter of fairness" Thus you get BS about how letting tax cuts expire will produce X more income. totally ignoring the free choice or changes that the income producers may/will make!!!!!!!! I guess you did not see the poster here that agued for the increases saying "the rich could afford it"1 Then suggest all they would have to due would have the gardner(youknow a working oerson) come 2 a month instead of 4 times in a month!!!!! Hope she did not realize she had just cut the garnners pay fro these rich people in half! But then maybe she figured the government needed the money from the gardner to give to someone who will not work, or to give a student loan to(we do not know if the garner was trying to put kids through school are not) He probably made to much money anyway abd was going to be hit with tax anyway! So maybe this small business guy just cut back the operation and laid off some people!!!!! In the mean time let's keep Americorp one of the essential get out the vote (dem) groups!!!!!In Indianapolis, AmeriCorps recruits busied themselves painting a giant mural on the side of a pawnshop. In Delaware, AmeriCorps members are recruiting women for the Women, Infants and Children welfare program and even driving them to welfare offices. In Virginia Beach, recruits helped the city double the size of an outreach program that signs people up for housing subsidies. They also "busied" themselves by organizing neighborhood parties And I guess we have forgooten the friend of OBAMA,Mayor of Sacramento, who agrred to return 400k in AmeriCorp questioable use funds 'So he would be eligible for stimulus funds! Remember Obama remover the Inspector General For finding the fraud? (investigation was never completed!!!!! New Black Panthe Party all over =special laws for Friends of The Obama!!!!!!! Cut some dimes leave the money in the states! It is not the Feds job to run education loans, Motor car companies or Banks!!!!!! Now healthcare they decry profit and can not balance a budget!!!!!!

You bet once the GOP pass a balanced budget amendment. When the deficit is below 1% of GDP cut taxes all you want so long as the deficit stays below the 1% level. I don't believe the GOP has wat it takes to do the right thing. (nor do the Democrats)

To seanprb: You may not be aware that the taxes on those making "more than $250 thousand per year"... is a tax on their Personal income, AFTER all business and personal expenses are deducted. A small business, such as a "Mom & Pop Market", a corner hardware store, or a small print shop... would be taxed according to NET... not gross... income. If the Store "grosses" $One Million... pays a couple of salaried workers, and deducts expenses for the products and overhead... perhaps "Netting" after expenses a 17% profit... which is equal to $170 thousand dollars for the owner... That's what they pay taxes on... $170,000... well BELOW the $250 thousand threshold. This is the tax code as prescribed by President Ragan in the early 80's, which is precisely what the current administration wants America to return to, rather than those small business owners paying excessive taxes, while the wealthy, whose final net income is above $250 thousand, cruise along on the Bush tax cuts... costing us approximately $1 trillion in revenues during that administration, while those same wealthy people almost doubled their average take-home pay... and most of us lost 20% to 40% of our take-home pay. RETURN the TAXES to the RAGAN Era!

Not according to my accountants. I have been advised to expect to pay taxes on my GROSS, as I ALWAYS HAVE. Your data sounds like it came from BHO/Biden in an attempt to lull the public in a false sense of security. Any body else out there grossing $250K +? What do your own accountants tell you? Are mine incorrect?

combatked16:18 PM Oct 23, 2010 WRONG! I am president of an S corporation and we pay TAXES! Lots of Taxes! Start your own business, then incorporate it, then tell me yhou don't pay taxes. ========================================================================== An S corp does not pay any tax. They are required to file Form 1065.There are no lines on this form for showing or paying tax. The S Corp gives the owners who earned money a Form K-5. The K-5 showing earnings is attached to individuals Form 1040 showing their earning as others attach their Forms W-2 or 1099. Another thing, One does not just start a business as an S Corporation. One starts as a C Corporation. One can request to be converted to an S Corp from one of the 10 IRS service Centers. Until the request is granted, you will file Form 2210. As for paying a lot of tax; most tax payers would be shocked if they ever saw a Form 4562. Most of your 179 property is payed for by the tax paying public, and you're allowed to sell it after 3 years for 10% of the cost of the item, including vehicles less that 6,000 pounds. Most have no idea about ACRS or MACRS. They would really be upset about the 20 year property and the DDB. (Double Declining Dalance.) I did not forget about Listed property or expensing. I've said enough. I'm just the son of two poor share croppers who grew up in the cotton fields of Coahoma County, Mississippi.

Why in the world don't we vote on the tax cuts now and LET THEM ALL EXPIRE. Most of us average wage earners didn't get but a measly few dollars savings on our taxes anyway, and we sure won't miss not getting it back, if we know the wealthy fat cats of this country will have to start paying more of their own share. It isn't as though they are ever going to be paying a FAIR SHARE of taxes on their income. It doesn't matter how rich you are, you still should pay a fair percentage of your income for taxes, and Bush should never have given such a huge cut to these wealthy, greedy people anyway. They sure didn't spend any money to help the economy with it.

Under Bush the unemployment was 4% so I would say the economy was much better with the tax cuts to the rich! I have never seen a poor person hire anyone have you?

Letting the tax cuts expire, as they were meant to, is too fiscally responsible for this country. Most people want to lower taxes AND reduce the debt. That's because most people failed at math in school.

Conventional (Republican) wisdom holds that lower taxes create jobs. Logic doesn't support this idea. Lower taxes on businesses won't create jobs because businesses only hire new employees when and only when the current staffing level can't handle the workload. More money in the hands of the middle and lower income groups can stimulate business because those in this group spend what they get. extreme example... even a million or two to the Gates, Buffets, Jobs or Ellisons of the world isn't going to build a fire under the lagging economy and stimulate job creation.

So when the rich guy puts his money in a bank, munibond or The OLD GMC BONDS He is not providing jobs=Banks lend to home, buyers, builders and business start ups!!!! Munibonds finance city constrution projects! The old Bond Buyers That got the Shaft by Obama were infusing money into GM to provide for tooling, jobs etc! They were then told they were speculators because they wanted 50% on the dollar! He gave away their money to the unions WHO HAD NO investmentor legal on the company assests!!! Maybe you should take a class in COVENTIONAL WISDOM! Conventional WISDOM knows you do not take money out of the private sector and then claim to produce jobs=Unless you are a politician! Do higher taxes cause job loss? the opposite of your statemnet Does the minimum wage cause loss?

Biden is out of the loop. Obama has been demonizing Republicians over the tax issue (pre-election) and has no interest in compromise on anything. It will be the same during the lame duck session - until the Congress balks at raising their own taxes. Then we will see compromise that will keep the Congress wealthy. But will Obama sign it?
