Karl Rove Not Keen on Palin Reality Show: Where's the 'Gravitas'?

Karl Rove, the Republican guru who is helping to raise tens of millions dollars for Republican candidates this year, questioned Thursday whether Sarah Palin's new reality show on Discovery will help or hurt her political ambitions in 2012.

"With all due candor, appearing on your own reality show on the Discovery Channel, I am not certain how that fits in the American calculus of 'that helps me see you in the Oval Office,' " Rove said in an interview with the U.K. Daily Telegraph. The story appeared on the British newspaper's website under the headline: "Karl Rove questions Sarah Palin's suitability for president."

Republican guru Karl RoveAmericans have high standards for the person occupying the White House, said the man who was President George W. Bush's top political adviser. "They require a certain level of gravitas, and they want to look at the candidate and say, 'That candidate is doing things that gives me confidence that they are up to the most demanding job in the world.' "

Rove singled out as potentially hurtful to her political future a promotional clip for the new show -- "Sarah Palin's Alaska." In it, the mother of five, enjoying the great outdoors, says "I would rather be doing this than in some stuffy old political office. I'd rather be out here, being free."

Palin did a "terrific job" as John McCain's running mate two years ago, Rove told the Telegraph. But "being the vice-presidential nominee on the ticket is different from saying, 'I want to be the person on the top of the ticket:' " Palin has not said whether she will seek the presidency in two years. But she is the darling of the GOP's right wing and is widely believed to be considering a campaign for the Republican nomination.

Back in the USA, Rove took heat from some conservatives and tea party activists when he challenged the worthiness of Palin-endorsed Delaware Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell for some of her "nutty" past statements.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Even Karl Rove gets it. Sarah Palin is running, full speed ahead for the cliff, but doesn't know it. John McCain and the Republicans created this monster, now they don't know how to make it stop. This situation would be amusing if it were not so pathetic. Sarah Palin is not uniting America with ideas for a better way forward. She is muddying the waters with stupid rhetoric and her own self-promotion. Memo to Republicans: Make it stop or your new-found majority will melt away and once again, because of your own actions/inactions, you will be looking in the window.

Sarah Palin... what a career... from mayor of a town of 10,000 people to governor of a state 2.5 times the geographical area of Texas with a total population less than Fort Worth or San Francisco. She is totally clueless about the problems faced by any large population area. She seems to have a short attention span... she didn't even feel obligated to complete the term as governor she was elected to. She just loves the fame and fortune but doesn't want responsibility. She's a great cheerleader for her political philosophy, but she has demonstrated that she can't handle a demanding position of responsiblilty.

I am surprised at Karl Rove suggesting that someone without "gravitas" has little chance of being elected to the Presidency by the Americanm people. Especially after they catapulted a former, unremarkable Community Organizer, and undisinguished State/national Senator into the Presidency, a post for which he was clearly unqualified and far above his pay grade. Where was the required gravitas there? Has Karl Rove, whom I've long admired for his pithy and astute political comments, given in to petulant disappointment over the failure of one of his political favorites because of Sarah Palin's intervention? I hope not.

1) As a consertive Republician I see a man who's rapidly turning into a RINO. And to paraphrase our president: is still bitterly clinging to all the media attention and power, despite the fact that he should be aware of the MSM's love to playup even small splits in the GOP as if it was a mjaor earthquake. 2) If Rove thinks Americans have high standards for president, has he been sleeping under a rock for the last two plus years?

I think Palin would have to Google the word "gravitas" to find out what it means..

Why oh why are we still harping on Sarah Palin being the president of the US. We all know from past errors that she is incompetent to be president of anything. And, does everytone in Alaska think that Alaska is Sarah Palin's Alaska?

Ironically your statements about Palin mirror Obama more by the minute. And Alaska belongs to ALL Alaskans equally. If you do not like Palin, my suggestion would be to stop following her every move and move on with your lives.

I am a moderate Independent who believes a one-solution spend-happy morally challeneged liberal agenda is harming America, but also undertands you can't legislate morals. And do we really want Karl Rove representing the voice of the GOP after the mess he helped create no so long ago? We do need change both right and left, not more of the same failed politicians steering the ship backwards to the rocks again. This time in history should be about the future of America, not the same tired past.
