Arkansas School Board Member Resigns After Anti-Gay Facebook Posts

Clint McCance, who came under immense fire this week for anti-gay Facebook posts, will resign from his position as vice president of the Midland School Board. He made the announcement Thursday night on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360."
He told Cooper that he regretted his inflammatory Facebook posts in which he said he wanted gay people to die and that he enjoyed the fact that gay people "give each other AIDS and die." In the same Facebook posts, McCance, 31, used the words "queer" and "fag" and said he would disown his children if they were gay, The Advocate first reported Tuesday.
"I would never support suicide for any kids," he said. "I don't support bullying of any kids."
He extended apologies to families that have lost children in suicides related to gay bullying and said suicide is not the answer. He also denied talking to any reporters before Anderson Cooper about the matter. One local blog reported Wednesday that McCance had said the matter had been "blown out of proportion."
McCance, who lives in Pleasant Plains, Ark., 70 miles north of Little Rock, said he was unaware, like many other people in rural America, about the seriousness of teen suicides. He called his comments "over-the-top" and that he went "too far with them."
"I brought more hurt on them . . . they don't deserve that and I do feel genuinely bad for them," McCance said. He added that he had hurt people on "a broad spectrum" and called his posts "ignorant."
"I'm not a bad guy . . . not a monster," he said.
He said he was resigning "to help my school, my community."
McCance said that his core beliefs haven't changed about what he reads in the Bible but that he will change the way he acts.
"I'm reaping what I've sown," he said.

McCance has sent his wife and two daughters out of state for fear of their safety after receiving thousands of calls, hate mail and threats.

A group of gay activists from Little Rock traveled to Pleasant Plains Thursday morning. They carried signs that said "All Kids Matter" and "Resign." The group planned to return to Pleasant Plains Friday morning if McCance had not resigned. A Facebook campaign -- Fire Clint McCance -- had gained more than 60,000 supporters since Tuesday night. Arkansas education officials condemned McCance's actions this week but fell short of calling for his resignation.

The Human Rights Campaign
, the country's largest civil rights organization working to achieve LGBT equality, took an ad out in a local paper's Friday edition, calling for McCance's resignation. The group's president, Joe Solmonese, said in a statement Thursday night after Cooper's show that McCance's decision to resign was a "step forward."

"What remains troubling is that Mr. McCance focused his regret on particular word choices not the animus behind those words," he said. "We hope he will take this time to reflect not only on the language he used but on what he can do to make the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and questioning young people better."

Following McCance's appearance, David and Amy Truong of Houston also appeared on Cooper's show. Their 13-year-old son, Asher Brown, committed suicide in September after bullying at school. They said he told them he was gay the day he committed suicide.

David Truong said he would pray for McCance, but Amy Truong said that McCance has "given himself a taste of his own medicine."

"Don't threaten him, don't threaten his family," David Truong said. "Show him compassion."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. "McCance said that his core beliefs haven't changed about what he reads in the Bible..." Isn't "love thy neighbor" written somewhere in the Bible. Didn't Jesus preach compassion for all others? It sounds more like McCance wants to pick and choose which parts of the Bible he likes and disregard those he doesn't like. Unfortunately, I've met a lot of Christians who do that. It's pretty sad. I'm an atheist but at least I'm nice to people.

Arkansas and the rest of middle america for that matter is referred to as 'gay hell' I am sure mccance is not alone in priding himself on creating this kind of environment. It is really sad that events like this occur in this day and age.. apologizing just isn't enough and standing behind once biblical beliefs simply means that he has not changed his basic view and that this is a half baked attempt at suggesting that he was somehow justified.

I hope he gets sued. That's the only way these guys get it. And school districts that don't fire these guys should be sued too. Feel the heat, boys. Especially since we can't count on any Christian compassion and tolerance.

please belive me with this statement that i am not condoning nor condeming the statement made by this person...I am simply saying to remember the first admement rights... face book is a public forum for people to voice there opinion, wich we are all intitled to.. we do not see any of the westboro going to jail or leaving there posistions because of there thoughts and words about things in life. no they are protected by the very constution that is suppose to protect us all. is the gentlemen wrong for posting the statement that he did maby.. but why should he have to relive his position in life just because of his personal opinion..We are suppose to live in a country were our thoughts and opinions are suppose to be protected and guarded by the very vitures that our for fathers laied down to all us to do say and feel how we think that we should.. but now thoes virtues have been replaced by good manners and tolerance wich is shoved down our throats.. spare this one and spare that one.. say this not that or you will lose your job or worse you will go to jail... free speech is not free speech if you have to use guidelines to use it

I'm not sure what it means to be free in this country. I hear gay people talking ill of the straight person a lot. But they have the freedom to talk that way. I feel bad for this guy in that he chose a poor place to voice his fusterations what ever the underlining cause of his outberst was. People say a lot of things they don't mean. Look at little kids and what they say. I don't condone his words and think he should have NOT used Facebook to voice them. Technology isn't always a good thing. Maybe just maybe all of your hate towards this guy is just what he was looking for.

Is anyone concerned that a school board member can't spell and obviously doesn't know what an apostrophe is? I know this is Arkansas, but come on..."killed thereselves" and "wearin." These are the people that are in control of educating our future! As a gay person, I am appalled! Not only do they hate, but they hate in a way that shows their own stupidity! Way to be an example to the children buddy!

I would imagaine that, although he wsa the only one to say it, his opinion represents that of many small town southern school boards. A sad commentary on humanity.

Sometimes technology isn't such a good thing. It is so sad that voicing an opinion is such a bad thing. Unfortunately he chose to do it on Facebook where anyone he wants to see the post will and then get all upset. I honestly don't care if a person is gay. I have many friends who are gay. Wonder what put this guy over the edge to rant like that. But this is America were words alone hang people and so many are out on a witch hunt looking for hidden meaning in everyone's words. Free speech, that doesn't really exsit in America. Just look at the 2008 election and how people were treated if they didn't vote for the now president. It didn't matter the policies he wanted to put in place didn't sit well with them. They were prosecuted because of the race card and nothing more. This man probably shouldn't have said the things he did but people do vent when they are fusterated. He picked a poor place to do it. So all you rock throwers take a good look at yourselfs before you pass such harsh judgements on this person. But I know better, you'll sit back and judge based on your prejudices.

I'm amused that this guy had the nerve to say he can't believe how "stupid" people of the world have gotten when he doesn't even use proper grammar lol. Should have been "themselves", there is no such word as theirselves, even so he spelled it "there"selves.. and this guy was Vice President of a school board? Clearly, he isn't very intelligent, and neither are the nasty, hateful remarks that came from him.

I always love the rhetoric coming from the offended such as suggestions that this person is a latent homosexual. Their opinion is just as inciteful as Clint's. Although he is entitled to feel as he does (America, remember), his manner for expressing it shows a lack of maturity. What Mr. McCance has shown he was a bitter closet idiot. He is now out of the closet. Be true to your beliefs. But be constructive as to how you express them or say nothing at all.
