Three-term Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold has been an against-the-grain iconoclast during most of his career on Capitol Hill. He was the only senator to vote against the Patriot Act in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, he opposed the Iraq war, and this year Feingold was the only Democrat to balk at Barack Obama's Wall Street reform legislation because it was not tough enough.
But this year the 57-year-old Feingold is facing an uphill battle against conservative Republican plastics manufacturer Ron Johnson, who has been leading in all published polls since July. The irony is that Feingold is under fire not for his dogged independence but for his support of most of Obama's legislative agenda from the 2009 economic stimulus to the health care bill.
Feingold -- who sponsored along with Republican John McCain the landmark 2002 campaign reform legislation -- sat down earlier this month with Politics Daily for a wide-ranging interview. Politics Daily made a similar interview request to the Ron Johnson campaign, but never received a response.

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around.
