Bill Clinton was back on the campaign trail Monday for Florida Democratic Senate hopeful Kendrick Meek, a candidate he may -- or may not have -- urged to drop out of the race at one point.

Clinton reportedly talked to Meek -- at least in a round-about way -- about the possibility of suspending his campaign and supporting independent Charlie Crist, a moderate who is the current governor. Meek is running third in the polls in a contest led by conservative Republican -- and tea party favorite -- Marco Rubio. Meek said last week that Clinton did not ask him directly to get out of the race and insists he never agreed to any such arrangement.

Fornmer President Clinton, Rep. Corrine Brown (D-Fla.), Democratic Senate candidate Kendrick MeekOn Monday, Clinton was in Orlando and it was back to full-throttle campaigning for the Democratic ticket, including gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink, according to the Washington Post. Clinton leaped onto the stage at a rally and gripped the hands of his friend Meek. "I keep looking for this enthusiasm gap the Republicans say exists and I can't find it to save my life," the former president said to cheers from a crowd of about 500, which batted around beach balls in downtown Orlando.

Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), who is not facing reelection this fall, dismissed the idea of any awkwardness between Clinton and Meek. "This was a love fest. He's campaigned for Kendrick 14 times," Nelson said. "What other candidate could say that?"

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Why is Clinton working so hard during this election, for Obama?? Answer HIllary. He knows the public isn't on the far left wing bandwagon and that leaves an opening for his wife, who has been gaining experience in the diplomatic corps to run against Obama in 2012. At Cleveland state university there were empty seats. The writing is on the wall. This man has had a heart attack he's out there to put his wife in the White HOuse, pure and simple.

Clinton deep-sixed his influence with his attempt to coerce Meek to drop out of the race. He may be a great fund raiser, but his less than forthright reputation is catching up with him. Democrats would do well to downplay the Clintons and get rid of the old-school tactics. People want honesty and transparency in government and government officials. In this day and age, it's in very short supply.
