But because the election has not been officially called, Foley took issue with Bysiewicz's announcement. He told the Times his own internal polling showed that he was the winner, though by a margin smaller than 2,000. "It does raise an eyebrow," Foley, a former ambassador to Ireland, told the Times. "I'm a little surprised that the secretary of state would announce an unofficial result when she admits that she doesn't have all the information. I think someone committed to acting impartially would have been more reserved."
The Republican called on the secretary of state to release detailed polling results. He would not say whether he might challenge the results in court.
The winner will succeed Jodi Rell, a Republican who opted against re-election.
