Mark Dayton Narrowly Leads Minnesota Governor's Race; Recount Likely

Former Sen. Mark Dayton held a razor-thin margin over Republican Tom Emmer early Wednesday in the Minnesota governor's race, virtually assuring a recount.

With fewer than 20 percent of the state's precincts uncounted, Dayton held a lead of less than half of 1 percent over Emmer -- about 9,000 votes, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Independence Party candidate Tom Horner was third.

Recounts are nothing new to Minnesotans. Al Franken's 2008 Senate victory over Republican incumbent Norm Coleman was subjected to a rancorous recount that landed in court and left the seat vacant for eight months.

"It looks like it's recount part 2, and this time it's personal," said Minnesota Republican Chairman Tony Sutton.

Former Democratic Sen. Mark Dayton, candidate for Minnesota governorDayton, a member of the Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party, an affiliate of the national Democratic Party, told voters during the campaign that the wealthy needed to pay more to shrink deficits and maintain and improve government services. Emmer called for more limited government.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a conservative who did not seek another term, is flirting with a possible presidential run in 2012.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Refreshing that soemone can win telling the truth. We cannot have the government services that we have come to expect without someone paying for those services, the wealthy are the ones who can and should pay additional taxes.

The Republicans are much better prepared for a recount this time around and I suspect there will me a much quicker decision made one way or another. I find it hard to believe that Minnesota voters still fall for the class warfare cries of Democrat politicians. "The wealthy need to pay more to shrink deficits and improve government services" is a very tired expression. It should be that the people who use those services should pay more for them and the deficits should be shrunk by less spending.
