Michele Bachmann Running for GOP Leadership Post

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), the conservative congresswoman who has become a superstar within the tea party movement, announced Wednesday that she is running for the number three leadership position in the House when Republicans choose their leaders later this month. The position is being vacated by Rep. Mike Pence, who announced Wednesday that he is stepping down to pursue other opportunities, which are widely believed to be a run for president or Indiana governor.

On her Facebook page Bachmann wrote, "I am pleased to announce that I am running for Chairman of the House Republican Conference! Constitutional Conservatives deserve a loud and clear voice in leadership!"

Bachmann's announcement sets up the first leadership contest between a tea party favorite and a member of the more mainstream wing of the House Republicans, Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas. Although Hensarling is a well-known among his fellow GOP members, he lacks Bachmann's star-wattage and broad following from the newly powerful tea party movement.

Although Hensarling has been endorsed by the second-ranking Republican, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), having Bachmann serve as conference chair would send a signal to conservative activists that their voices have been heard by the newly empowered GOP leadership, including the presumptive House speaker, John Boehner. On election night, Boehner told a group of tea party activists, "I will never let you down."

Bachmann founded the congressional tea party caucus in July, giving the small-government movement a formal presence on Capitol Hill. In 2009, she spontaneously organized a "Capitol Hill House Call" that drew thousands of tea party supporters to protest the health care reform bill, then pending in the House. At the high-energy rally, Bachmann memorably warned Democrats, "Get your hands off my health care!"

Bachmann's fiery rhetoric has made her the heroine of the tea party conservative movement, but a gadfly for Democrats, who are deeply offended by her attacks on President Obama and liberals. On Tuesday night, MSNBC's Chris Matthews asked the congresswoman if she had been hypnotized, because she continued to give the same answer to different questions. In response, Bachmann smiled and said, "I think people are thrilled tonight. I imagine that thrill is probably maybe not quite so tingly on your leg any more."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. I live in northeast Ohio, and we have Dennis Kucinich tilting at windmills all the time, but this woman is too much. She just has no grasp of reality. As long as the GOP has Joe Barton, this woman and Sarah Palin, they should never criticize anyone else.

There are no positives in the Tea Party desire to repeal Health Care because they aim at the entire bill being removed. After one hundred years, we finally got the Congress to work on health care. If Bachman wants a position of power, lets hope the Republicans ask her the specifics of what she wants to change in ALL the 270 bills before Congress in December as well as Health Care. Saying that people are thrilled is not enlightening. This person is barely mediocre as a leader, a candidate off the conservative shelf. We need intelligence and thought, not thrills to solve our economy and jobs problems.

If Bachmann has any relatives who receive Medicare benefits (or destitute relatives who receive dwindling Medicaid benefits) or Social Security checks, is she in favor of "means testing" as a way to cut the soaring costs of entitlement programs? Funny how a lot of so-called "real conservatives" just spout "Get you hands off my health care" but don't urge retirees to surrender their Medicare cards in protest of the deficit. Their whole agenda right is only to tear down the Health-Care Bill, but where are Tea Party's specific programs to help Americans get back to work and stay healthy in the meantime? Tapping into anger and short attention spans of voters will only go so far. And no, I'm not a Democrat. Just wondering if the solutions are hiding under all the rhetoric and hate signs. We Republicans won because we tore down our opponents--but who has presented any real plans? I've seen all the debates on C-span and am still looking for answers! Anyone out there have any links to any sensible/realistic proposals from our side? Thanks.

Bachman was caught in another lie yesterday...saying the president will spend 200 million a day on a trip to India. She made it up.

To bad te folks in Minnesota can't demand their vote back. She spends far more time on television networks and/or talk shows than she does in her own district of Minnesota. Hopefully, in two years, the folks in Minnesota will get the message...

I am a Minnesotan and hope and pray the Republican party is too smart to give her anything. She has embarrassed this state to death...

Bachman is so far right and radical with her ideas that I fear that this woman will never listen to the other side. She has shown how stuborn she can be; even when she knows how wrong her ideas may be. I think Bachman would be our worst nightmare other than Mickey Haley!

She is a super star in my book and an honest, smart woman who will do many good things for our Country. I hope she is on the Presidental ticket in 2012. I would love a Huchabee/Bachmann ticket for a ready great team to clean up the Federal fiasco.

......I vote mostly conservative but there is no way I would want either to be on any presidential ticket. I like to listen to them but neither have what is needed, not to say they don't know more about the gov than the guy in the oval office did after 130 days in the senate.

Lets see what here position is on increasing the Federal Debt. If she votes no on the legislation, the government can not borrow any more money and that shuts down the economy. We saw how that worked with Newt in 1994. She's probably going to do at least that much harm to all of us if she gets a position of power. There is a choice here for responsible leadership, and then there is scorched earth policy. The answer is coming soon from the party of "NO."
