GOP's Tom Foley Concedes Connecticut Governor's Race to Dan Malloy

Republican Tom Foley on Monday conceded the close race for the Connecticut governor's seat to Democrat Dan Malloy after he and his advisers concluded they could not make up the almost 6,000 votes that separated them.

The Connecticut vote, and determining the winner in its aftermath, had been plagued by confusion. On Election Day itself, polling stations in Bridgeport had run out of ballots before the 8 p.m. closing time and a judge ordered a dozen sites to remain open until 10 p.m.

On the day after the election, Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz, a Democrat, declared Malloy the winner based on unofficial returns.

Tom FoleyHowever, the Associated Press, which initially said that Malloy had won, withdrew its call the same day and Foley, a businessman and former ambassador to Ireland, disputed Bysiewicz's decision.

At week's end, Bysiewicz again proclaimed Malloy to be the winner, prompting Foley and his team, with the help of the Republican Governors Association, to review results from all the state's towns.

Although Foley's camp said it had found "significant deficiencies" in the election process, there was no evidence of fraud or indications that there would be enough amended vote totals to change the outcome.

"The election on Tuesday was a conclusive victory for Dan Malloy and this result should not be questioned," Foley said at a press conference in Hartford.

The governor's seat had been held by a Republican, Jodi Rell, so Malloy's victory means a pickup for the Democrats. Rell had decided not to seek re-election.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Well, I want to be the first to announce the new soup ine, charity rules for 2010 and on. If you are a democratic voter and can prove it, you get to eat from the charity soup line, or clothes from the charity. Not eat 'first', but eat at all. If however, you are some tea pity party republican and you can't prove you are a registered democrat, you don't eat, period. Get out of the line. You either have a democratic registration, or you don't eat. You can always ask a Tea Pity Party voter for help, but good luck. If you are goimng to vote for the banker party, go eat with them.

You demonrats are whistling in the dark. The TEA Party represents the vast number of sane and normal people in this country, who are firmly against the socialist agenda you crapheads represent. Blow all you want, but your days are numbered. And you know it.

There all a bunch of worthless, conceded, coneiving, lying, cheating, back stabbing, dishonest, greedy, money grabbing, non caring, pieces of cow dung. Dems and GOP alike. You people should be trying to get a term limit in all gov't jobs, its the only control people have over politicians. Until that happens citizens are going to be hung out to dry by them

Tom Foley is a man of grace and class. His concession speech today was short and to the point. Tom Malloy might had been the victor but in my book you are the true winner. Please stay around, we will need you to run in fours years when the citizens of Connecticut have had enough of the poor boy routine!!!

Why do the Republicans always contest when they lose? This happened in Illinois, too. Why are they always suspicious?

If I remember correctly wasn't it the Democrat Al Gore who conceded to George Bush and then called back an hour later to retract it and demand a recount? How could a Liberal like you forget that? None of the others have and they make sure everyone knows they were "robbed", lol

Republicans are suspicious because of what they did to Al Gore in Florida when they stole the election from him (remember when they had uncounted votes that could prove Gore won riding up and down the hwy while time was running out to be counted) Also in Brower county fla. when mostly Dem county votes was giving to Bush because of how the ballet was drawn up)

Why all the hostility to the Tea Party? They represent a legitimate point of view, it may not be mine, but they are as entitled their opinions and votes as liberals or libertarians, or other "mainstream" republicans are. Democracy hopefully means everybody gets to vote and the first ammendment gives us the right to spout our ideas whether they are rational or goofy. Why the hostility? The Dems pushed the health bill down the people's throat and some of the people are trying to spit it back up. We bailed out Wall Street, the execs. got billions with a b in bonuses, while we are looking to cut food stamps, entitlements like a cola for pensioners. Who wouldnt be angry?
