Colin Powell: Obama Lost Focus, Suffered 'Body Blow' in Midterm Elections

Colin Powell, a friend to President Obama yet also a onetime top aide to two Republican presidents, said Obama should have focused on the nation's troubled economy during his first two years in office "to the exclusion of most everything else domestically."

Powell told CNN's Larry King the president's party suffered "a real body blow" in the midterm elections, in part because Obama didn't have his priorities straight. "When you're starting out as president, you have to figure out [what] is most important," he said Monday night.

He said endorsing Democrat Obama over Republican Sen. John McCain in the 2008 presidential election was a hard decision for him, but he has no regrets.

Colin Powell, President Obama"I think the president has done a good job of stabilizing the economic system. I mean, Wall Street was collapsing, the whole economic structure of the country was falling apart, and that's been stabilized," he said.

Powell, a self-described moderate Republican, is 73 and has no political ambitions. He laughed off a suggestion by Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell that he should take over as White House chief of staff, even though he talks regularly with the president and members of his administration. "I haven't been asked and I don't expect to be asked," he told the CNN host. "I have no interest in government service."

But the former secretary of state under President George W. Bush and a commanding general in the Persian Gulf War still pays attention to politics. Asked about Bush's recent defense of waterboarding as an interrogation technique, Powell said he could not support a regimen that "could be called now torture."

And what of Sarah Palin and the tea party, King asked. Powell said the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate was fascinating, a political celebrity and a "political force." He challenged Palin and tea party-backed officials to be precise about what programs they would eliminate in their quest for smaller government and lower taxes.

Watch interview.

I think (yes, another opinion) that in general what Powell is saying is true. Obama was swept in with a tied that also washed a Democrat majority up on the beach. (Okay, it strengthened an existing majority, but a like my metaphor...) If that had not happened his legislative agenda might have been very different. But I think seeing that they had the reigns those voices that pushed him to accomplish certain goals, quickly, while he could, were impossible to ignore. What Powell is saying (again, in general) is true. Our country has some foundational problems. But Congress and Obama seem bound and determined to keep building. It's only a matter of time before the plaster and duct tape fail and the whole thing crumbles into a pile of debris. Oversimplification? Maybe. But I think our government has a tendency towards over-complicating things. The more complicated and convoluted, the easier it is to hide motives.

General Powell...America had a huge stake in the economy getting stabilized, but so did the rest of the world - the GLOBAL economy. This being said, President Obama said that he would tackle the Heath Care Crisis (one of his campaign promises) and hoped to have it completed "by August." Doesn't anyone remember what happened and what caused this bill to be dragged out, stalled, demagogued by the Republicans? You recall Orrin Hatch being the first to literally walk away from the bipartisan panel that was set up... I remember it well - and I KNEW from that point that Republicans had every intention of doing what Demint said....he planned to stop this President in his tracks...and the sausage-making was all over the place after the signal was clear -- stop "him" any way you can. Thus it took over a year to get the Health Care Bill passed -- an exhausting experience! Secondly Republicans were successful in narrating the subject - ..."death panels", "government interference with a patient and the doctor", "healh care costs will go up", etc etc. And - you will hear the narrative all the time that says that the President did not sell his message...did not explain clearly his accomplishments... I say - General Powell - step forward and be a part of the solution. You'd make a great Chief of Staff.

I am not sure how to take this article! Powell has no regrets but Obama should have done this and that! Seems like he is talking in circles.

Powell's or anyone else's view on are simply opinion, i don't thnk anyone has the right to criticize President Obama when they have not walked in his shoes, nor have given him the 8 years yet. 16 years of adminstrations that did not lookk at the banking issues, the .dot come bubble, the greed of wall street, the dumbification of the american people, education not for performance but for pay, etc, etc. etc. And these pundits and their guests only push the agenda of the corporate media. King or any other host are only puppets, who have prospered from simple talent of being at the right place at the right time. When the middle clas becomes the lower class maybe then someone is this country will wake up.

Powell supported this man for President of the United States, even though, he knew it was hard for him to make that decision. No wonderment there. He knew this man was inexperienced, yet, for a personal reason, supported and voted for him anyway. That is not a sound, prudent thing to do. His words are nice, but, I think, deep down he may be regretting his decision, as are many others. Using your brain is always better. Look where feelings has gotten us!

Where has it gotten us? I hear so much about that like loss of our freedoms etc, but when you ask specifics you recieve no answers. When people bash the health care reform, you ask them what they would do they say nothing. Nothing is fine for blog posters like me, but a President has to do SOMETHING. I shudder to think where we would be today if McCain would have been elected. I used to respect him greatly, but he has proved to have zero actualy principals. I honor his service as we all do, but that time in Vietnam cannot excuse constant flipflopping on ever issue and seemingly having no real core values that he will defend except staying in office. We we got not aint perfect, but the best available at the time. Why not try to help make it better instead of just tearing down?

three years ago i would have agreed, and voted for powell. but once he decided to abandon his ethics and support oboma i lost all respect for him. one thing is certain though, the majority of the blacks will stick together and vote for another black regardless of qualifications.

I would invite anyone to reinterprete Powells words.....Which to me says this, If this President had any sense of reality instead of putting his perceieved personal quest to right the wrongs of the world, the American public would be better off.The country might not be suffering under all the unemployement and financial strain. If this President had ANY real world experience, certainly the QE2 would not be ruining the value of the dollar. If this President was actually able to handle this job from day one ,we wouldn't be suffering as much as we are and losing status on the world stage. I guess I made a mistake backing this guy instead of anyone else that had at least a clue how to run a country.Geeez maybe if he had listened more to the Republicans and not Nancy Pelosi. That's how I read Powells comments

Powell is a RINO and is not a Republican by any means. He backed Obama based on race and not experience as Obama is the least qualified person ever to hold the office.

I am getting somewhat tired of fringes determining what a "Republican" is or isn't. I used vote for some Republicans, but the tent has gotten so small that there isn't room for anyone with a slightly different opinion. By labeling everyone but the most conservative as RINOs you shut out a whole lot of people who share common ground with you. Too bad.
