Where's the Change After the 'Change Election'?

This week on Capitol Hill, lawmakers returned to Washington after the midterm elections. There were smiles, tears, fingerpointing, and victory laps.

But for all the change that the voters seemed to demand on Election Day, the leadership of the House and Senate remained completely unchanged. Republicans voted John Boehner and Mitch McConnell to stay on as their leaders, while Democrats kept Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid at the top of the party for the sixth year in a row.

So we have to ask -- if voters sent a message to shake things up on Election Day, did Washington just not hear it?

Politics Daily's esteemed panel of experts discuss that question, predict what might get accomplished in the lame duck session of Congress, and think of ways Barack Obama can get his groove back... all in today's installment of Politics Daily's Sunday show. Click play below to watch:

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

duniawala, so you want a list of budget cuts? Well, let's start with lowering salaries to our legislators and having them buy their own healthcare (just as Obama suggested our soldiers should do), then let's cut funding to left wing NPR, then let's cut some of the ridiculous pork barrel spending like paying for statues in certain cities...it goes on and on. Heck, if we cut down on Obama's vacation and taj majal stays we'd safe a fortune!

Tom, Boehner is still saying "no?" Good. That's exactly what we want him to do.

This article might make more sense if the newly elected Senate and House were actually there yet.

The debate about "Why no change...." ignores the fact that the voters (Congressmen and Senators) for the leadership positions are the same now as they were before the elections. How could anything change when this is the case? Perhaps after January there could be a change.

The writer wants to demonize the new electees for, "no change" when they haven't even been sworn in yet! A little premature don't you think?...

Thats a fine question, Where was the change when Obama got elected??. We were told, bring the country together, financial conservative, Fix the way congress operates, fix health care, end the war in Iraq and Afganistan?? The change we got, "We won so its our way or nothing", "Spending and wasting more money than all prior Presidents combined", "Quick sign it befor anyone reads it, legislation." "Health care that kills jobs, raises taxes huge, is twice the actual cost we were told, and covers less people than we were told, and is against what 67% of the American People wanted., Wars still going stronger than ever. Add to that, US Constitutional Rights and Tax payer paid Trials for people who want to kill us. Nothing but more handouts to Illegal Imagrants. That was the Change, We are now moving away from change!!!

The people have no one to blame but themselves. They elected Blue dogs ( repub ) instead of democrats and kept the republicans that robbed them blind and now they re-enforced their ignorance in the last election by following tea party lies and deception. No wonder there is no change. I wonder If you were on a battle field and you ran over and give the enemy your rifle ,what do you think would happen? I believe they would put you out of your misery right quick. That is what's in store for us now.So suck it up and reap what you sewed.

Mr. Boehner, Mr McConnell where are the jobs? Jobs jobs jobs, you were to focus on this like a lazor right? After all you said you were there to do the will of the people. So what's more important creating jobs and getting this country moving again or making President Obama a one term president? That is your will not the will of the American people. They want you to focus on wha tis really important which is jobs. If you don't Mr Boehner you will be a one term house speaker. And Mr McConnell are you going to say no until you are up for re-election in 2014? Where do your priorities lie?

LSD Less emotionalism and more facts. Between 2001 and 2008 there actually was LESS federal government interference. It only took one year of Mr. Bush's presidency to take this country from a surplus of 2.36 billion dollars to a 150 billion dollar deficit and it got only worse from there. When President Obama took office in 2009, he inherited a 1.4 trillion dollar deficit, with a 154 billion dollar bailout plan formed by the previous administration and implemented by the current administration. Less government led to the Wall Street disaster, mind you however, Geithner was the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York during that time period. Less government ignored the data that implicated a possible terrorist attack on American soil. Lawmakers acting in good faith on both sides of the party willingly surrendered many of our rights under the Patriot Act. The American people entered blindly into a religious war, purposely mislabeled and repeatedly drilled into us by our then leaders as a war on terrorism. We have not caught Bin Laden, but have executed Saddam, a man who was killing his own people on his own soil, as if Americans have not done this themselves with lynchings of African Americans carried out by the very people who were sworn to uphold the law. Now we have American soldiers returning home, with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), homeless and without jobs. Jobs continued to leave this country by leaps and bounds under NAFA, initiated by former President Clinton, while there was less government. At least Clinton regrets not having the foresight to see that American companies and businesses would apply this trade agreement to their advantage with regards to increasing their profits. BTW- do not be misled by the official unemployment monthly rate, as it does not reflect the number of Americans who have ran out of UC benefits and still remain unemployed. Have you noticed that good economic news appears around election time and Christmas? I say Christmas, because America is still predominately a Christian country and retailers make the bulk of their profits during this time period and any other holidays celebrated around this time that includes the exchanging of store bought gifts is added gravy. Americans are in a catch-22 situation. We cannot afford to spend money for the holidays and cannot afford not to spend money during the holidays. Bush was right about one thing, go shopping if you want to help the economy, otherwise there will be more layoffs and job losses in the days to come. Leadership of the auto industry without government interference made bad decisions that drove this industry into bankruptcy and then they came to the government and begged it to BAIL them out. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) added more bureaucracy and red tape to a failing educational system that had only been designed by the government to educate the humble masses at an eight grade level during the Industrial age. Education was not valued and teacher's pay reflected this to this day. You get what you pay for. No one wants to raise taxes and I hate to pay them because the more we pay the less we get. However, unless there is a fair and equitable increase in taxes that does not burden the new poor middle-class, we are not going to get out of this mess any time soon. Many states are near broke, close to broke or already broke and face the same delimma. Americans want their entitlements, Social Security, Medicare, etc, but guess what we cannot afford them. If you are interested in understanding why we cannot afford them and the facts about entitlements, like after approximately 2.5 years of paying taxes and future benefits (entitlements) forthcoming to each "working" American is being paid for by someone below that time period, read "A History of American Entitlement Programs" by Brenda Powers, http://www.helium.com/items/316120-a-history-of-american-entitlement-programs. All men are created equal, but in reality there is nothing equal about life in America. It is not about the balancing of powers, but the balancing of the rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

anyone considered term limits for Congress: People like John Boehner, Mitch McConnell eat out of the pork barrel and carry it home too often and too long. (b1975leigh) works for me. What about the new elected congressman that are recycle coming back for another try at the government Healt Care Government Pension, should's they also have limits as to how many time they can come go. Lets start by cutting the Congress and senate pay, health care, pension most are millioniars and don't need the money. Mitch McConnel worth 19.9 million Boenhner 3.6 million tax payer money
