Democratic Rep. Ben Chandler Blames Pelosi for Party's Woes

Rep. Ben Chandler of Kentucky, a Blue Dog Democrat who narrowly won reelection earlier this month, says blame for his party's losses lie squarely at the feet of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"It baffles me that you can suffer the largest defeat since 1938 and still maintain the leadership of your caucus," Chandler told McClatchy News Service. ". . . You're talking about the loss of 60 or something seats held by capable public servants. There had to be something going on at a level above them."

Chandler voted against Pelosi to be Democratic minority leader, casting his support behind Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.).

Chandler said President Obama, whom he endorsed in 2008, is also responsible for Democratic losses.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Well Duh! Was it that hard to see the writing on the wall? Nancy and Harry dug the ditch (canyon) of partisan politics so deep that there was no way possible to bridge the gap when it was needed to serve the will of the people. Sorry but the Dems let them dig it so now they must lay in it!

Nancy Pelosi did a fabulous job as speaker of the House. Her "iron fist in a velvet glove" approach effectively enacted extremely important legislation, including the health and financial bills that are critical to the future of the country. Chandler is basically a conservative, who is out-of-touch with the liberal reforms needed by the country.

The American People have their eyes on congress, to be transpartent and working together in the comming year. Reduce spending make cuts where there's so much pork barrell. Adjust the heath care package that was ramed through congress with out the American peoples approval or knowledge of what was in those 2000 pages. The message was very clear to congress in Nov we want to know what congress is doing and why

The bad thing about "us voters" is that we have learned to demonize and insult the PERSON and their CHARACTER and not the politics of the party. Just take a look at some of these postings. Do you know her? Nope - yaaaaaaa don't. Nancy as a person is not bad at all. In fact, just the opposite! She's a fellow Marylander that comes from a rich history of political leaders (the D'Alessandro family). She is educated, highly intelligent and a very VERY giving person. Keep it real, folks!! It is her POLITICS that you can dislike but unless you KNOW her you have NO RIGHT to demonize her as a person or slander her character. I personally am a "Blue Dog" and I agree about Nancy: She should step aside so we have a more moderate voice in the Democratic Party. We need a person who believes in FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY and yet believes in LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. Neither PARTY is leading that charge. They are too busy blaming each other. This isn't 2nd grade. THIS IS MY COUNTRY, DAMMIT.

Blue Dogs are RINOs. Period. As for Nancy Pelosi, why does the Republican Party and its lemmings hate her so much? Because she pushed through over 400 bills to help the economy, the middle class, etc.? No, because she did that without any contribution of the Republican Congressmen/women. The Party of NO has been sitting on their hands for the past 23 months doing NOTHING to help our country. Nancy Pelosi did. Health care is a HUGE value to ALL Americans, no more dropping you if you have a catastrophic illness that will cost the insurance company profits, no more denying coverage for a pre-existing condition. Health Care Reform is NOT evil or wrong for the country, it is one of the best things that could have been done. It could have been a lot better if not for the blasted RINOs known as the Blue Dogs, we could have had the public option where you could pick and choose what coverages you want just like Congress but no, too many deals were made and it was watered down. But the features that did get through are a HUGE step forward. And college kids have more loan money available to get an education. And Nancy Pelosi did this with the Democrats who wanted to help America in the House of Representatives. What do the Republicans want? They want President Obama to fail. That is their #1 objective. It's not the economy, it's not jobs, it's not anything to help this country. Think about THAT when you realize who demonized Nancy Pelosi.

Margaret it not failure anyone wants to see of obama or anyone else in congress,Lord knows they have done this on their own. I will agree with some of the provisions in this health care package being very good for some people, and as you say the package was all done with out support of the other side, (closed door) as I recall. Any part of the package that was used as pork barrell to get a yes vote needs to be removed in the new year. The American people must be informed about all sections of this costly package.pelosi demonized herself,I must agree she should have stepped down as a leader in order to start the process of healing the party.

You are right in everything you say and I could not agree with you more but RINO is republican in name only, republicans that vote more on democratic lines than republican, and Blue Dogs are are ultra conservative democrats that do not believe in compromise.

California residents in her area reelecting her to represent them is one thing that they would have to deal with. having the majority of her party electing her to be the new minority leader was a huge mistake. This move could only endanger more democrats in 2012 and could have an ill effect on Obama's reelection bid.

It's amusing how Democrats choose to ignore the obvious. If Pelosi has done such a great job why is her public approval rating at 27%? and why did the Democrats take their worst beating in over 70 years?...

hey, chandler....how do you think about, "US" democratic voters??? I for one am disgusted that our democratic representatives sat up there let everything implode!! Don't think you blue dogs did all the work of making sure the Democrats retook both houses in Congress. TOO-many of you democrates were fighting amongst eachother and dropped the ball. So, thanks alot for helping Americans, jackasses!!
