Jimmy Carter on Obama's Future: 'Next Two Years Will Be Better'

Jimmy Carter, a one-term president, visited Tuesday at the White House where another Democratic president, Barack Obama, is hoping to avoid Carter's fate after taking what he himself called a "shellacking" in the midterm election.

Carter, one of the few American politicians to visit North Korea, was scheduled to meet with National Security Adviser Tom Donilon in the midst of a crisis on the Korean peninsula brought on by the communist regime's deadly attack on a South Korean island last week. But the former president was also expected to meet with Obama, USA Today and Politico said, citing White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

Former President Jimmy CarterOn Monday, Carter told CBS News that Obama should chart an independent course over the next two years and give up on trying to gain Republican support for his policies.

"I think the next two years will be better...President Obama will be much more independent in fighting hard to prevail and not trying to reach out, which turned out to be fruitlessly, to get two or three Republican votes," Carter predicted.

Instead, the former president said Obama should take his case directly to the American public. The Republican opposition, Carter asserted, "so far have been totally irresponsible," but may become more responsible as they take the control of the House.

Carter is pessimistic about the prospects for cooperation. But Obama met with the bipartisan leadership of the House and Senate Tuesday and made some progress on finding a compromise on Bush-era tax cuts, which are due to expire at the end of the year.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

jjohnblack012, the reason the republicans said no from the very beginning was simply that Obama was not the person with the brains to become president. Remember, it was not only the republicans either, before he was nominated there were a lot of democrats who were not for Obama either. Of course like how both parties run, they still vote for thier kind whether they thought he was a candidate for president or not. Just to at least get thier vote for thier party.

This man was a one termer for good reason. Now, he has the nerve to say this nonsense. If President Obama wants to serve the American people in his last two years in office, there won't be more than that, he needs to have listened to the voters and learned a lesson. He does not want to be taking advice from this old loser. There is still an opportunity for President Obama to become a good President, but not by heeding the advice of former president carter, who still thinks he is president, instead of just a failure totally. He does good work with Habitats, but as president, he scores as the lowest ever.

There is room to negotiate on the tax cuts. The 250,000 limit should be raised to 750,000 or an even one million. The 250,000 number will hurt many small business owners and working professionals. In my area a registered nurse gets 85.00 per hour and a respiratory therapist is about the same. ex ray tech pay starts at 60.00 per hour. with a wife as a nurse and a husband as a respiratory therapist this family would make well over 300,000 w2 income per year. This group have the availability to spend money which would help the economy. I would rather they support the economy then pay that money in taxes.Yes raise the taxes on those making millions per year to some point then gut government spending to the bone. If you give government too much in tax revenue they won't cut spending as they should.
