Texas Rep. Joe Barton Invokes World War II in Touting GOP Battle With Obama

Rep. Joe Barton, who is in the running to head the House Energy and Commerce Committee, promises all-out warfare with the Obama administration if he takes the reins of the powerful panel.

In a slide presentation e-mailed to colleagues as a way of laying out his plans, the Texas Republican declares war -- figuratively, one assumes -- on the White House, using World War II imagery, the Washington Post reports.

Along with photos of Gens. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Omar Bradley and George Patton, Barton fires away: "Speaker [John] Boehner is our Dwight Eisenhower in the battle against the Obama administration. Majority Leader [Eric] Cantor is our Omar Bradley. I want to be George Patton -- put anything in my scope and I will shoot it."

Barton gained notoriety and was threatened with the loss of his ranking position on the committee last June when he told then-BP CEO Tony Hayward that Congress owed the oil company an apology for forcing it to set up a $20 billion escrow fund for victims of the disastrous Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Barton called that a "shakedown," but later had to apologize for his remarks.

Joe BartonBarton, who chaired the committee when Republicans held the majority between 2004 and 2006, will likely face opposition from rivals when a steering committee -- under the sway of Boehner -- starts picking committee chairmen for the next session of Congress, which convenes in January under GOP control. The conservative from east Texas was recently re-elected to his 14th term.

The committee has a wide range, from energy and environmental issues to business regulation and even oversight of defense contracts. Under Democratic chairmen like John Dingell and Henry Waxman -- the current head of the committee -- it forged a reputation for conducting aggressive investigations.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

cheneylips1:40 PM Nov 30, 2010 Margaret, the answer to your question is that this country does not want a man - Joe Barton - in the pocket of big oil companies as you noted, to head energy. The Republican's wnat him to do that! They are back! **************** Nonsense. BP oil gave Obama a larger campaign contribution than any other canadidate. Who is in who's pocket?...

Why in the world would the citizens of this country want a man to head energy and the environment who is in the pocket of big oil companies? That is a death knell for the Gulf of Mexico if another spill happens. I just do NOT understand why money is more important to these Congresspeople who are supposed to be looking out for the health and well-being of Americans. We allow oil companies to poison our environment and our air and they make ridiculously huge profits every year to whose benefit? For example, BP is not an American company. Do they profit anyone HERE or is it all for overseas investors? And that's another thing. American corporations are firing or laying off American workers in favor of shipping jobs overseas. The Chamber of Commerce, which represents American businesses doing that job relocation, is so pro-big business that I often wonder when every American making less than $100,000 a year will wake up and fight back against the exportation of jobs that should stay HERE.

Juarez is the war Texas needs to worry about right now. The U.S. Boarder with Mexico is under attack. I am counting over 37 dead in the last three days and counting. The weird thing is that only the Mexican news and Videos from Rutgers news is covering the war?

The deaths are on the Mexican side - El Paso is amazingly safe. Hence, no news to us (US).

Joe Barton wants to be George Patton although Joe Barton never served a day in the military? Perhaps Joe Barton can play the role of a draft dodger. A vet.

And this would be good for the GOP? I don't think so.
