RNC Can't Pay Its Bills -- Cites 'Cash Flow' Problem

The Republican National Committee, the GOP's fundraising and organizational arm, is facing a "cashflow challenge" and can't pay all of its bills on time.

In a memo Tuesday, RNC Chief Administrative Officer Boyd Rutherford wrote, "We will not be able to pay off the vendors this week. We will be slow in paying as we are having a cashflow challenge. Everyone will be slow paid until after the first of the year."

The acknowledgment by Rutherford of the RNC's money woes comes at a bad time for the group's chairman, Michael Steele, who already faces several potential challengers for another two-year term, writes the Washington Post's Chris Cillizza. Aside from Steele's verbal gaffes, the cash-flow issue is likely to re-open the debate about his financial stewardship, the Post said.

Re;ublican National Chairman Michael SteeleIn its most recent filing with the Federal Election Commission, current through mid-October, the GOP organization reported $4.5 million in debt and $3.8 million in cash on hand -- not an unusual amount of debt for a party committee in the midst of a hotly contested campaign. Its next fundraising report is due Friday at the FEC.

Meanwhile, Derek Flowers, the RNC political team member whom Rutherford informed of the money crunch, resigned Thursday, the Post reported. An RNC spokeswoman told the newspaper, "All invoices received by the RNC are accounted for and paid in a timely manner."

As Politics Daily's Jill Lawrence reported Monday, the names of three women are in the mix to lead the committee: Ann Wagner, a former RNC member and co-chair and a former ambassador to Luxembourg, who has already declared her intentions, and two others who might -- Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett Packard CEO who just lost a California Senate race to Democrat Barbara Boxer; and Maria Cino, who was CEO of the 2008 Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn.

Among men interested in the chairmanship, former Michigan GOP chairman Saul Anuzis is running and Gentry Collins is looking likely. Collins was until recently political director of the RNC and made a splash by releasing a resignation letter detailing the sorry financial and operational state of the RNC under Steele.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. So much for Republicans being the "fiscal conservatives."

LOL! After losing to Barbara Boxer in CA Senate race, former fired CEO of HP, Carly Fiorina, is thinking about stepping into Steele's shoes. That could be fun to watch.

Not to worry. As soon as they pass the tax cut for rich they will turn on the faucet and the money will flow to the party. Each and every one will get their pay off for passing the tax cut for the rich.

Steele was perfect for the "party of no" during two years of GOP negativity, but the new congress shows signs of cooperation, so his term should end!

I have no dog in this fight, but it seems to me the RNC would be nuts to keep Steele in a job he apparently isn't doing. Whether or not the money issue is his fault is irrelevant. He's the head guy, and it's on his shoulders.

I love to read the anguished and ridiculous statements from these left-wing Obama-loving Democrats. They haven't the faintest idea of what is going on in the real world. They are probably just waiting for more top-down money redistribution. When the country is a bankrupt third-world power Obama will be long gone, and the'll have to work for a living and maybe even pay taxes. By the way,the super rich are all Democrats.Do some reading and check the records.

Just one more good reason not to give the Super Rich a TAX Break, they can't even support thier own party.

Nothing would please me more than to see Micheal Steele fail. I cannot see not one social gain from any Republician adminstration. Their goal has always been supressing the under dogs and even though you think you're white Mr. Steele, you're as black as I am for sure. Wake up.
