Obama Needs to Call Summit on the Deficit, Top Democrat Says

Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, a member of President Barack Obama's debt commission and chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, said Sunday that the president needed to follow up the commission's report by calling a summit meeting in which he takes part.

"What I think is really necessary now is that there be a summit that involves the president," said Conrad, a Democrat. "You know, when Judd Gregg and I first proposed this notion of a commission three years ago, we designed it so the president's people were at the table. The secretary of the treasury was the chairman of the commission. The head of [the Office of Management and Budget] was one of the 18. When we didn't get sufficient votes in the Senate to advance that proposal, the president, by executive order, created this commission but did not include his representatives."

Kent ConradInterviewed on "Fox News Sunday," Conrad said he had raised his proposal with White House officials, though not Obama himself, and had yet to receive any response.

On Friday, the commission voted by 11-7 to approve a controversial plan to cut the deficit by nearly $4 trillion over the next 10 years by overhauling the tax code and slashing spending in major government programs, including Social Security and defense. But the vote fell short of the 14 needed to send the recommendations to Congress for an up-or-down vote.

The commission consisted of 12 members of Congress -- six from each party -- and six appointees.

Two top Republicans also said Sunday that Obama's involvement was necessary if the commission's recommendations were going to go anywhere.

"I think the message to us, coming out of this deficit reduction report is that it's time for the president of the United States and people like John Boehner and myself and others to sit down and talk about what we can do to make sure that we have the same kind of country for our children and our grandchildren that our parents left for us," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

McConnell said that changes in entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare cannot be done "with just one party. You can only do entitlement reform on a bipartisan basis."

Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas, the incoming chairman of the House Republican Conference, said on Fox: "We have to have presidential leadership. ... We've got to have the leaders of the House and the Senate, Republican and Democrat, and the president or his representatives at the table. And I think that's the next logical step."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. elraik, please explain to me why I should give up something I have contributed to for 60 years and am still working because I cannot afford to retire??? Let these politicians give up and go without - they certainly had no problems granting themselves a raise while the rest of us got screwed.

congress and all federal employees need to earn the national average wage, which is NOT six figures....they need to pay into the wonderful, funded (NOT) social security system for their retirement...and they need to buy their own IRAs (since it's such a great retirement tool) and pay their own health insurance premiums like the rest of us. that's a start! they need to take the lead and show us what they legislate is good for all! starting with themselves!

These are some really good suggestions, bravo! In addition, how about instead of changing the Social Security retirement ages, how about we choose if we want SS or can opt out and take a check for what we contributed and then stop taking any more out of my check. Same with Medicare. IMO the ones that should give up the most are the people that are not destitute and have been reaping the most Government Largess. The millionaires that get money for letting land stand idle and ANY corporation that gets money from the Government for any reason other than buying their products and/or services.

Fact is, we are all paying the price now for Obama's lack of executive and leadership skills. To be fair, he has done a good job of reading from a teleprompter, playing basketball, finding time to play golf, saluting as he approaches Air Force One, throwing parties, hiding his cigarettes, and vacationing

There is no money folks!!! It's all based on credit. They are buying time with loose lips, hoping that the public doesn't notice the passage of laws which limit one's ability to spend the way they choose, and at the same time increases the politicians ability to spend away future generations worth of credit without choice of representation - i.e. taxation without representation. "...stinks don't it!!!..."

What I think needs to happen is, yes, have the president sit down, but not with democrats and republicans. Throw these party affilated morons out, and find some true Americans, non party affiliated. These two parties have become so "us, us, us" that this country doesn't stand a chance. Throw out their perks, have term limits and require that they have seen service for this country in some way, and not have been "career politicians". Have had a job and know what "real life" is about. THEN, maybe something can be accomplished.

Keep Obama & his czars out of a summit on the deficit. Just like the Stimulus was writtne by the Apollo Alliance, we don't need these socialists involved in solving the problems of this country. They do not appear to have our best interests in mind. George Soros, Andy Sterns, Van Jones, Anita Dunn, and other unelected advisors should not have their fingers in advising Obama--that's why we elected representatives and senators--to represent us.

Overhaul the tax code? Why not do away with it entirely? I know, I know, a big portion of Hussein Obama's jobs he created were agents hired by the IRS to go after legitimate taxpayers and see if they could squeeze any more money out of them. If we did away with the Gestapo IRS you'd lose all those Obamajobs and the rate of unemployment would go even higher. With the census taker Obamajobs gone and the IRS jack-booted thug Obamajobs gone, he would have created zilch jobs.

Amen, Kenneth, Amen. Do you also notice that they say we all have to make sacrifices, but do you see this group of crooks and fools offerring to take a 10 % salary cut to help the debt? Some people have had to do this just to have a job. These career political leeches will NEVER do this. They live in a bubble. Good for you in also stating what we're all are saying and HAVE said. Do you notice ANY of our magnificent new media printing comments like yours????

2000-2008 tariffs assessed but not collected under free trade agreements $4,319,473,520. - when will our congress see the loss of revenue we USE to get and let the trade deals expire or raise the rates 8% across the board. Even the playing field, keep American jobs in this country.
