Did the GOP Learn Its Lesson in November?

While much has been made of the "historic" "wave" "landslide" midterm election results, one thing nearly every poll confirmed was that the results were not an affirmation of Republicans, but instead a repudiation of the big spending Democrats.

The Republican push to end earmarks has been hailed as a sign that they were on the right track. But as Democrats and even some pork-addicted Republicans point out, earmarks make up such a tiny percentage of total spending that the value of an earmark ban is, though important, primarily symbolic.

This week, the current congressional Republicans will have their first real opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to the fiscal conservatism that fueled the midterms' GOP wave, as Senate Democrats try to bring to a vote a $1.1 trillion "omnibus" spending bill to keep the government running.

The massive measure compiles 12 individual appropriations bills into one, and increases spending by billions of dollars. And that's just what's on the surface.

As is always the case with large-scale legislation, the devil is in the details. And this bill looks to be loaded with the same pork barrel extras that Congress tries to sneak in year after year.

The alternative to the omnibus bill is the stopgap measure passed by the House on Wednesday night, which would freeze spending at current levels and give the new Congress a chance to enact cuts in a few months. But even this sort of legislation has historically been packed with add-ons, and House Democrats have the votes to ensure that this year's bill is no different.

Clearly there is no way congressional Republicans can get any significant spending cuts through the lame duck session, but they absolutely should insist on a clean, pork-free spending freeze.

To do so, they need to stand united in opposition to the omnibus spending bill, and not let a few retiring legislators who want to bring home the bacon one last time wreck their credibility with the American people.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

They learned that they can stop anything they want, because they don't care if anything gets done unless its for their masters, the top 2% of the population. Why can they do this because of the uninformed voter. They wave the flag and yell insane things like the governments taking over healthcare when its just a reform of their greed and fraud. Since Fox News is the most watched cable news and they push the right wing agenda, using made up facts and fear mongering they can get the geniuses that is the american voter to take the streets being upset for which they haven't a clue. Its our fault that we let this happen, the debts going to get bigger and social security and medicare is where they are going to look for cuts and you idiots voted for it.

THE QUESTION REALLY IS..."HAS THE AMERICAN VOTER LEARNED HIS LESSON?" NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS...REPUBLICANS ARE DEDICATED TO THE FOLLOWING: PRIVATIZATION OF SOCIAL SECURITY: YOU GO TO A BROKER AND PAY A COMMISSION PRIVATIZATION OF HEALTH CARE: NO PAY, NO DOCTOR FOR ANYBODY END OF VETERAN'S ADMINISTRATION: VET GETS VOUCHER...HOPES IT COVERS PROBLEM PRIVATIZATION OF SCHOOL SYSTEMS: YES FOR CHARTER SCHOOLS YES FOR HOME SCHOOLING EASING LAWS SEPARATING CHURCH AND STATE ENDING UNIONS ENDING REGULATION OF BANKS, CORPORATIONS, THE FDA, LEGITIMIZATION OF CREATIONISM IT WON'T HAPPEN ALL AT ONCE...BUT IT WILL HAPPEN. AND IT WILL ALL BE DONE IN THE NAME OF BEING "100% AMERICANS" AND IT WILL ALL BE PROMOTED BY RIGHT WING MEDIA. AND YOU"LL WONDER WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED AS THE MIDDLE CLASS DISAPPEARS. IF YOU THINK THAT ALL OF THE ABOVE IS A LIE...JUST READ THE REPUBLICAN WEBSITES
