President Barack Obama has lost support among Democrats and liberals, resulting in this lowest job approval rating yet in polls conducted by the Marist Institute for McClatchy News. One consequence of the ratings drop: Republican Mitt Romney beats him in a hypothetical 2012 match-up. (Story; Poll data)

Fifty percent disapprove of Obama's performance, in the poll conducted Dec. 2-8, while 42 percent approve, with 8 percent undecided. In November, 48 percent disapproved of Obama's performance while 45 percent approved.

The poll was conducted during a week in which Obama announced a freeze on federal workers' pay and also struck a deal with Republicans to extend the Bush-era tax cuts to all Americans regardless of income, an agreement that drew protests from Democratic congressional leaders and spurred anger among liberals.

Barack Obama and Mitt RomneyAmong Democrats, Obama's job approval rating fell to 74 percent, from 83 percent a month ago, and dropped among liberals to 69 percent, from 78 percent.

The poll also included these match-ups between Obama and potential Republican challengers:

- Romney leads Obama by 46 percent to 44 percent, with 10 percent undecided. The margin of error is 3.5 points.

- Obama leads Sarah Palin by 52 percent to 40 percent, with 9 percent undecided.

- Obama leads Huckabee by 47 percent to 43 percent, with 6 percent undecided.

Romney leads Obama among independents by 47 percent to 39 percent, with 14 percent undecided, while Obama easily beats Palin among the same voters, by 52 percent to 35 percent, with 12 percent undecided. Palin gets 78 percent support from fellow Republicans, compared with 87 percent for Romney and 86 percent for Huckabee. Obama and Huckabee run about even among independents.

In one unrelated poll result, 59 percent of those surveyed said that those who publish secret or confidential U.S. documents, as WikiLeaks has done, should be prosecuted while 31 percent consider such disclosures to be protected under the First Amendment guarantee of a free press. Ten percent were undecided.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. I can only assume that, in turning his back on his base, our President has had enough and doesn't want to win a second term. In a sense I don't blame him, it's a nasty job trying to govern with right wing bigots ruling the other party, but I wish he's go down in righteous flames instead of being swallowed up by an embarrassing compromise!

I am a conservative so I do agree in principle with cutting taxes for all but I also see the warped methods that the rich and big business use to only improve their own bottom line and the heck with the country at large. In essence, give tax breaks for the rich and big business, only, if they reinvest in the US economy, create jobs here, and keep their business and manufacturing here. Also a bonus if you bring business and jobs back into the USA and NO more incentives or subsidies for shipping US jobs and manufacturing to places like China and India, Enough of that...

What you are seeing is a failed democrat administration and congress. They were so far to the left now they will collapse together.

I know one thine Congress better vote NOT to give them a raise. After 2 yrs of no COLA increase it is hurting some of us Srs. When you have less than $ 1000 a month of SS benefit it have been rough, real rough. I cut last yr. and with prices still going up will have to cut more in 2011. Just don't know where as yet. It has gotten to the point that all the good foods I should eat I woun't be able to afford. Low income vets and Disabled are in the same boat. CONGRESS you better not get a raise.

I have never been an Obama supporter, but I have to give you Kudos Mr. President. I am certainly not part of the high income group. Never was, but even former President Clinton supported the deal knowing full well it was the only solution.

WE should start cutting the Federal budget by laying off federal employees. The Federal government is basically insulated from the real world. Lets start changeing that as much as possible so they start getting the real picture,

I am disappointed in President Obama - I have been a huge supporter of him but this latest deal that he made with the Republicans is just plain "giving in" to the rich. The $250 for seniors was defeated as being too expensive, but letting the wealthy tax cuts continue is not - doesn't make much sense to me.

Well, how does Hillary Clinton fare against GOP candidates?

Nothing against Romney, but the left is already trying to frame the next election as they fear Palin & Huckabee much more than Romney.

As for this tax issue. Why shouls success be punished? It seems like it is only the low income ,poor and those on entitlements that are screaming the most about the rich. Why? You had the same opportunities as they had. You do not have to be born rich to become rich all you need is determination. Look at martha Stewart she once was on welfare, What about that nut on TV selling all those stupid kitchen gadgets(Ronco) he was an average working person. Does anyone remember or still see those little reflectors that they install on the roads so you can see the lines better? They were invented by a man in Havertown Pa. He was just the average working man driving home from the jersey shore at night in the rain and had difficulty seeing the road. He became a millionaire with his idea and his family still collects the royalties for each one they make and use.

Lets add another success story. Bill gates, Bill and a few friends designed a computer program that made the average persons computer user friendly. It was windows 95. He became an overnite success and Microsoft was born. It all started in his garage.
