Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is expected to announce this evening whether he will seek a second term in his current post, and one source tells the Washington Post that the embattled leader will throw his hat into the ring.

Steele has told RNC members that he will announce his intentions in a conference call with supporters Monday night. The Post's Chris Cillizza says Steele has done little to prepare and launch a new campaign, but notes that a Republican insider who recently spoke to Steele says he plans to run for another two-year term.

Fox News first reported Monday that Steele will not run but later cited two RNC members who said he would.

Michael SteeleIf he does seek re-election, there will be plenty of competition. Other announced candidates are former Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis, former RNC co-chairwoman Ann Wagner, former RNC official Gentry Collins, Wisconsin GOP Chairman Reince Priebus and former RNC official Maria Cino.

The RNC has 168 members and 85 votes are needed to claim the chairmanship.

Steele, a former Maryland lieutenant governor, has been criticized for fundraising shortcomings, alleged mismanagement of the national committee and embarrassing loose-cannon comments.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
