Residents of Springfield, Ill., received startling news Wednesday that an autopsy found Mayor Tim Davlin apparently killed himself with a single gunshot to the chest.

Davlin, 53, was pronounced dead at his home Tuesday morning, after police responded to a 911 call, according to the State Journal-Register.

CNN reported Davlin was discovered just before he was due in court to present an accounting of his late cousin's $845,000 estate. The two-term Democrat was executor of the assets.

Illinois State Police have not released any details about the death.

The coroner said toxicology tests on the body would not be available for at least three weeks.

Davlin had said he would not seek re-election in 2011. CNN reported the Internal Revenue Service had filed a lien against his home for nearly $90,000 in back taxes.

Alderman Frank Kunz was named mayor pro tem of the 120,000-resident city. A new mayor will be selected within 60 days, under city law.

Services for Davlin are scheduled for Saturday.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Okay. So the guy was on the take. He was behind on his taxes and he was being called on the carpet to account for discrepancies. We got that. Wife? Children? Anything maybe he might've done that was good for the city? It seems like this is a very cut and dry article, almost like this guy was a blip on the radar of Politics in general, like it was almost a necessity to write about it, but not worth elaborating at all. Guy died. Suicide. Funeral's Saturday. Just wondering why more wasn't said...
