Majority of Americans See U.S. Losing Ground on Key Economic Issues

More than six in 10 Americans say the country is losing ground in three key economic areas -- the deficit, the cost-of-living and availability of good-paying jobs -- and the percentage of those who believe that the year ahead will get better has dropped sharply since January, according to a Pew Research Center poll conducted Dec. 1-5.

Sixty-seven percent see the country losing ground when it comes to dealing with the budget deficit, 64 percent say the same about the direction of the cost-of-living, and 63 percent believe the situation as far as the availability of good jobs is getting worse.

Pew also asked about other issues ranging from the condition of Social Security to environmental pollution, and not one of them garnered more than 27 percent who felt progress was being made on them.

Economic issuesThere were big partisan gaps in the results for Republicans and Democrats, with the budget deficit, health care, U.S. economic competitiveness in the world and illegal immigration topping that list. On each of those, Republicans believed by 30 points or more than Democrats that the U.S. was losing ground.

The biggest issue where more Democrats than Republicans thought the country was losing ground was the gap between rich and poor. Democrats saw that situation getting worse by 12 points more than Republicans.

Fifty-five percent of those surveyed saw better times ahead in the next year, but that was down from 67 percent who felt that way in January. Republicans were the most pessimistic, with 41 percent believing the next year will be better. Sixty-seven percent of Democrats foresaw a better year ahead (down from 83 percent in January) and 54 percent of independents agreed, (compared to 60 percent in January).

Forty-eight percent subscribed to the view that "it will be a long time before the economy recovers," 33 percent said it is not yet recovering but will do so soon, and only 17 percent believe the economy is recovering now.

Fifty-seven percent say they are finding it difficult or very difficult to afford the things they want compared to 40 percent who say it is easy or very easy for them, with 3 percent undecided.

When it comes to specific items, 64 percent say it is difficult or very difficult to put away savings for retirement, 57 percent report trouble affording their taxes, 51 percent have difficulties with health care costs, 50 percent have a problem paying for gasoline, 48 percent are challenged when it comes to paying for heat and electricity and 29 percent say money is a problem when it comes to food.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Ironic ain't it. The repukes constantly moaned about the growing deficit and the first thing they do (even before the take power) is contine a 10 year bush tax cut that contributed immeasurably to the deficit.

They said they would do exactly that. Watch where they want to make their cuts in spending. They will fund the Pentagon and repeal whatever they can in what safeguards they can get at.
Medicare and Social Security are their next targets, but not war spending. Cutting funds to the war spending is the key to drawing down the deficits.

We ave been heading down this path since 1916, it's a shame it has taken 94 years for people to figure out that Progressive Liberalism is a dead end street. Europe reached that dead end before we did only because Europeans are use to a feudal system that has taken care of their them for a thousand years, independence is rare to them, so they accepted Progressive Liberalism as a natural order of things. Americans by nature are far more independent and it has take longer to win them over. I realize our Liberal Progressive Schools no longer teach a complete course on American History, so that gives many Americans an excuse for not knowing how we got where we are today. Now people are waking up, the only question is, is it too late? There is so much damage done, can we turn it around?

Good that you bring up about following history. Those who don't know it will repeat the mistakes made by others before them. But in today's world, instead of being in an agricultural economy, we now find ourselves in the non-productive "information" economy...we don't make anything of value, but we sure like the "instant info tech" we get non-stop, 24-7...no wonder the USA is sliding down the slope...And guess what? We sure love being fed **** and staying in the dark on the issues. The so-called polls are only useful to the pollsters... it's "information" used to manipulate the minds of the weak and uninformed. Can anyone deny that Americans are "illiterate"??

We have no real leaders in either party. Until we do, America will continue to decline in every area. Anyone who's lived at least 50 years can clearly see the decline in America since we've become "globalized". We've been sold out by the very "representatives" who claim to speak for us...and continue to be. All this talk of "patriotism" is just that...talk. A real patriot would stop taking payoffs from Corporate America whose interests are making more money at our expense. "Patriots" need to disallow lobbying and change the law that allows rich, international corporations to finance the elections of politicians who are in Washington to do nothing more than represent THEM.

Since you can't ban the lobbyists, you have to cut off their funding by putting in controls on banks, subsidies, tax code allowances for domestic and international companies, and reducing the imports. When we can't create jobs, put money away for savings, or buy fuel no one is a patriot. We all are just poor.

The USA move into the World economy by the greedy rich started the mess this country is in. No matter whether or not the major Unions were corrupted by the Mob or not, the Unions gave the working force ( middle class workers ) a opportunity to earn a good living. Wherein marriage, children, family and a place one could call home could occur. The rich were being forced to trickle down their greed for money to the working class. But when we, the USA workers allowed the greedy rich to close down almost all manufacturing in the USA, and send this process overseas for cheap labor, it was the beginning of the end for the middle class worker's ability to earn a decent wage. The greedy rich's mind set is being able to payout dirt cheap wages to USA workers and inport all of the overseas cheap labor products into this country so the USA worker doesn't need hardly any of the greedy rich's money to survive. Just like the way it was in this country when Industrialization first started. Back when the greedy rich paid 35 cents a day for 18 hour days. The greedy rich didn't even pay the mine workers USA currency. They gave their workers what was called script. This script could only be used in the company store, and the items sold were at outrageous prices. The same greedy rich had 12 yr old boys working in the mines for pennies before the "child labor acts" were passed. The greedy rich have been working on this plan for some time now. There are more millionaires & billionaires now than ever before in this countries' history, and it's not because there are just more people. It's because the worthless greedy rich are holding onto all of their money instead of allowing it to trickle down to the middle class and poor. Everyone needs to quit being so complacent. This "world economy" that the rich is shoving down the throats of the USA citizens is detrimental to the well being and peace of mind of every working person in the USA. We, the USA citizens need to force US owned companies back into this country. Or force tariff laws onto every product that tries to come back into this country for sell. Wherein these products would never be able to be sold in this country due to their high prices. The greedy rich are making a profit from cheap labor and also from the cost of these products once they enter our country. The USA middle class can not survive this way. Not on a service industry and very few manufacturing jobs type of an economy. Wake up America, we need to force the jobs back into the USA. To Hell with the other countries' economies. Ask yourselves, Why would we, the USA citizens want to make rich, countries like China etc." China is not our friend, never will be our friends. China is not going to succumb to being a free interprise democracy due to their getting richer. We, the USA citizens need to take control of this country back. The Senators & Congressmen work for us, not just the greedy rich. We are their bosses. This country is supposed to be a country by the people and for the people, so help us God. I don't mind the fact that people that own businesses want to make a profit, but these profits have to be shared by their workers, trickled down. Even Washington, Jefferson etc were rich men for their times, but they trickled the money down to their workers. We have to get it accross to our Senators & Congressmen that we are their bosses, they listen to us. Almost all USA citizens are college educated people. We know what's going on. Were not all farmers or ranchers with hardly any education. WE, the USA citizens need to move on all of this, now, before it's way too late.

The trouble with America today is the greed at the top of the food chain. They gourge themselves with money and power and want more, more, more. They're not patriotic or they would see what their greed is doing to our great nation. People want to work. We're not a nation of lazies. People want to pay their own way. We're not a nation of people with their hands out saying gimme, gimme. People want to raise their children right, give them food, housing, education and a start in life to be good Americans. Someone has to get these greedies to see what they're doing to our country!

We have two political parties that are supported by corporate giving. Where do you think this "someone"you referred to will come from? Our leaders are average and the majority of voters are not educated in economics and procedure. The latest round of gerrymandering is about to begin. If you want a leader to come from this mix, you have to start searching the diplomatic corps, then the corporate investors and management, not the political parties.

The fact of the matter is that ever since the Democrats took over Congress and the Senate in 2007, the economy has taken a nosedive. The same was true during the Clinton administration. When the Democrats had control of Congress and the Senate the economy was in a disasterous freefall. And, look at what took place when Carter was in office. What a mess!!!!!!!! Our economy could be jumpstarted almost immediately if we were allowed to drill for our own oil in this nation. But, the lunkheads in charge are stonewalling - I think it is an intentional attempt to destroy the economy of the U.S.

republicans and democrats alike recently denied seniors a cost of living increase. this week they denied a one time 250.00$ payment . neither party was interested. american seniors are no longer a political influence. we are taking out of the system, not contributing to it. the next generation of taxpayers have to be placated, so that rich fat polititians can continue the lives they have become accustomed to. so it's up to you, youngsters. if you don't want to carry the rich around on your back, quit listening to that sweet talk, and throw them off.

The few commens show how ignorant and out of touch they are with what has been going on for better than 3 years. The House and Senate have been controlled by the Dems for 3 years, they brought all this on but people are just blind to the fact that every time the Dems get control things go down hill. Jimmy Carter-recession, 1988 Dems control the House and Senate - S&L crisis, first 4 years of Clinton - recession. Reagan fixed it Dems broke it, mid 90's Repubs controlled purse strings, balanced budget and they will fix it his time if its not too late. Bush had more to deal with than any president in recent history, that's why he was re-elected. The dems destroyed his credibility and now they are destroying America. It was the Dems and a Dem president (Bill Clinton) that sent our jobs overseas and it is the Dems that continue to be responsible for our destruction.
