Sixty Percent of Americans Say Afghan War Hasn't Been Worth Fighting

As President Obama unveiled his long-awaited Afghan strategy review Thursday at the White House, a new poll finds a jump in the number of Americans who don't think the war has been worth fighting.

Sixty percent now believe the war hasn't been worth fighting "considering the costs to the United States versus the benefits to the United States," while 34 percent believe it has been. Forty-three percent say they "strongly" believe the war wasn't worth fighting, according to a Washington Post/ABC News poll conducted Dec. 9-12.

That compares to the Post/ABC News poll in July when 53 percent said the war wasn't worth fighting compared to 43 percent who said it was. The last time a majority believed in the war was in December 2009.

Barack Obama and AfghanistanFifty-four percent of those surveyed say Obama's plan to start withdrawing troops from Afghanistan next summer is "about right," 27 percent want them out sooner, 12 percent would keep them longer and 6 percent are undecided.

When it comes to how the public rates Obama's handling of Afghanistan, Americans are divided, with 46 percent disapproving, 45 percent approving and 10 percent undecided. That's little changed from the numbers in the July poll, but a big drop in approval compared to last April, when 56 percent approved of Obama's performance on the issue.

The strong sentiment that the war is not worth fighting is tempered somewhat by the finding that 53 percent believe the effort has contributed to the long-term security of the U.S., compared to 40 percent who do not.
The public is evenly split over whether it supported the troop surge ordered by Obama.

Overall, the Post/ABC poll points in the same direction as one conducted Nov. 8-15 by Quinnipiac University. The Quinnipiac survey showed 50 percent of Americans saying the U.S. should not be involved in Afghanistan, compared to 44 percent who believe the war is not the right thing to do. In all the previous Quinnipiac polls this year, at least a plurality had supported U.S. involvement.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

This war is simply unwinnable. Just ask the Russians. But it seems to have a life of its' own. To pull out would make it seem that one is soft on terrorism, which of course it isn't.

The saddest thing about both wars that we have been LIED INTO is that most of the casualties are youth and innocent women and young soldiers who only wanted a job and a chance to do what they believed was right. But my question is..
How can any war be right?

The old maxim goes "You can't win a land war in Asia. We shoulda learned this lesson in Vietnam.

Napoleon, and Hitler found this out. The British and the Russians found this out in AFGANISTAN for god's sake.

And here we are fighting a war we can never win.

Operation Enduring Freedom had little to do with 9/11 and more to do with a president's misguided effort to create peace in the Middle East. Bush probably believed with all his heart that he was protecting America--but it was still wrong. He gave Iran more power. The wikileaks documents show that even the Arabs are afraid of what a nuclear Iran will do. Saddam-as vile as he was-was a balance to that. Irag has distracted us and caused us great financial harm--resources that could have been put to much better use.

I am a bit torn--we can't just pull out, but the whole war was a mistake. It destablized the region.

I support our troops , regardless of where they are . But in Afganistan, we are fighting a war with one hand tied behind our back. We have no clue, what winning the war is or when we get to the finish line. We cannot win this war, bring them home, put Drones in the air, put the troops feet on Mexican border,I'd feel a lot safer and the battle on the war in Mexico / United States Border, we can win. Bring them all home. Lets do something different, seal our own borders, spend the money here. Stop all who cross the border . Its not that big of a deal, But Afganistan, is waste of some beautiful , brave , talented troops.

i often wonder what gen patton, if he were president, would have done after 911. i wonder what hitler would have done with the mid-east situation. and i wonder what hitler would do with the jews running america now. i guess we will never know. but one thing i am sure of and that is that america needs to stop policing the world and keep our nose out of other countries business. take vietnam for example. 58,000 young men and a few women were sent to that hell hole for what. to die and then depart like a coward dog with its tail between its legs. 58,000.
then you look at what we did to japan after the pearl harbor attack. how many thousands of japanese did we annilate. in todays world america would not do what we did in japan. no way. america is weak. militarily, economicaly, politically, and in the eyes of the world we can not hide that fact. there can be no winer in afghanistan and when we leave there will be chaos, internal fighting and a war within that country itself. so again we spend billions and billions of dollars, loose the lives of thousands of our young men and women and for what. only to withdraw and accomplish nothing. you see folks no one wins in war. there are only loosers. and the loosers are the young men and women we send to war to die for nothing. now we are faced with north korea flexing their muscles over south korea. what will happen if north korea attacks the south koreans. will we send more troops and ships and do what?? what will be the reaction of china if this happens? so here we go again. there is only one answer to ending all these fears and that is that we and our future generations somehow realize there is nothing gaining in wars but eveything gained by everyone when we turn back to god and ask for world peace. then we could all live in this world and help one another instead of destroying each other. can you imagine what a world like this would be like. its hard to imagine, but i hope that someday my kids and g-kids would be able to live in a world like that. so for now all we can do is pray for peace and hope that this world someday achieves that goal. until then and if we dont, we will continue to live in a world of war and starvation and finally destruction of millions and millions of people. pleace pray for peace and offer syour own hand of peace to your family, neighbors and your enemies and let the dogs of war go away. peace and god bless all for listening. and by the way merry christmas...

God bless you, and if people would only start by living the golden rule of helping your brothers, instead of murdering them, this world could evolve to the level that is the real legacy that the human race is promised, a better life, and real, tangible "salvation",and I don't mean just spiritually, but also materially!! Mutual cooperation is much more desirable, that mutual destruction!
