"There are too many chemicals and not enough data," Crofton said. "There are literally thousands and thousands of chemicals in use for which we really don't have much information at all."There are at least two comments that parrot the "government is bad" line. These people are not thinking originally, or at all. The EPA, in spite of its failures, has many concerned and conscientious employees. A careful reading of the article shows that clearly. There are real issues discussed, real solutions considered, and real issues clarified for us to think about. These negative commentators need to go back and actually read the article, beyond seeing just enough to trigger their unthinking canned response. A final quote in the article seems to have evaded them completely, since it describes their attitude quite accurately. "Behavioral toxicology is a field defined as a race to figure out what's going wrong and how to deal with it before we're too stupid to care." Of course their problem may not only be the result of toxic chemicals, but also of a toxic, deficient education system. That is another problem we need to address.
Thanks to the other commentators who provided useful statements and questions.
It is too late for the EPA to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide. That stuff is already in our water supply!!! In many parts of the world Dihydrogen Monoxide is in the very air we breath!!!!
It has long been known to be in our food supply, however, there are some distilled spirits that are safe to drink.
FAIL -- They didn't include BS from anti-this and anti-that campaigns, Congress, and obama -- three of the biggest and most destructive polluters ever.
December 23 2010 at 9:54 AM Report abuse Permalink -8 rate up rate down Reply20 yrs. ago, my husband of 37 yrs. left me and left me with a garage full of malathion and other dangerous chemicals. My garbage collector would not take them, so I called the EPA in Houston, TX. They might as well have said "Duh" and hung up on me. They couldn't help me. So...I took all the chemicals and dumped them in their containers on the front porch of my ex's new bachelor pad. I developed a high disregard for the EPA at that time.
Somebody here contributed a report that they had been in a room that had just been bug-bombed and they developed blood clots. People need to learn common sense. If you bug bomb, leave the house for at least three days. Don't breath the stuff! Or... wear a mask on your face! For heaven's sake!
I really liked your comment, it was awesome. That is exactly what we need to do. Every day I see commercials on depression and how "depression hurts" but if your current medication doesn't work, add this other medication to make it better. But beware of these 45 side effects. Ummm.. if your current medication is not working, why not STOP using the medication instead of adding to it? Eat well, sun, fresh air, these are ingredients to health.
December 23 2010 at 12:31 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyGreat and funny-serious comment. I think that insecticides and herbicides are among the most dangerous of all products being sold. I almost never use them, and if I rarely do spray for insects (occasional attacks by termites or heavy concentrations of mosquitoes) I use very little, and make sure I wear a mask. We living organisms are all related, and anything that kills one of us will probably kill or harm the rest. The labeling on these products, if they contain a warning, usually put it in fine print. The effect is to reassure the consumer that they are harmless and just dandy to use lots of. Anyone who breathes this stuff is asking for trouble.
December 25 2010 at 6:54 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyOur children now have the DNA of 3 parents, their mother, father, and some polluting corporation that has altered the first two. We are truly a by product of corporations.
December 23 2010 at 8:19 AM Report abuse Permalink +10 rate up rate down ReplyGovernments have proven more potent polluters than corporations, as seen in eastern Europe ant the former USSR satellite states. Our own Federal nuclear sites have not been pristine. I suggest that government is as likely to be saiier as savior here, and is much harder to control than a business.
January 20 2011 at 8:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply3 years ago I released a bug bomb in My bedroom to combat spider mites that had infected the cats. Naturally I followed the directions and was attracted to the product from Pet Smart because it stated 'safe for pets, children and nurseries'.
Within minutes I felt tightness in My chest upon entering the room. In a short period of time I was in the emergency room with blood clots in My lungs. 39 pulmonary embolisms, causing extreme pain, loss of the use of the left arm and near death.
I spent a month in the hospital because they could not thin out My blood. I told the doctors and nurses I had recently been exposed to a pesticide and asked to be tested. They declined, stating that the 'hospital does not have the capacity to test for chemicals in the blood lab'. Since there was no evidence, I cannot take legal action. The product was gone from the shelves by the time I got out of the hospital.
So now I am disabled for life at the age of 47. On coumadin (which is a rat poison) and 30 other prescription medications just to keep Me alive. Instead of a productive member of society working in My career as a dental hygienist, I am a burden on society through SSD, SSI and medicare.
The fall of Rome was in part due to lead poisoning from metal cups. What will happen to us with the overwhelming amount of chemicals we absorb every hour of every day? What will happen to our children, grandchildren and the generations to come that are forced to live in pollution? Will there even be a human species in the far future?
Stop poisoning ourselves now and contact your federal and local representatives. It is a small action, but the accumulation of many small actions can make a difference if we all contribute.
You are already online, so do it now!
There's virtually nothing coming out of the EPA that's trustworthy these days - and a whole lot coming out of this government that is about controlling what you do, when you do it, how you do it, and how much it costs. This is just another fear mongering attempt, like the health care scam, Michelle O's "let me tell you what to eat" scam, global warming, etc. The only thing they DON'T want to control is terrorists.
December 23 2010 at 8:08 AM Report abuse Permalink +3 rate up rate down ReplyWe Americans have been the unknowing participants of this country's biggest human clinical study for decades-the EPA, FDA, CDC & NIH have all had sufficient knowledge that these chemicals are dangerous-it's cheaper to fast forward new medications and allow human exposure to dangerous chemicals and chart the course over time than to spend the time & money to research the safety of these chemicals before allowing them to reach the masses. With the monetary payoffs of big Pharma, Monsanto, DuPont, etc. to the government and their cohorts, we have been made sick, our children have been made sick, and all they can do is come up with more pills to "cure" your ills to the tune of billions in corporate profits. Do not think that they care about human life-the almighty dollar is the God they pray to. THAT IS WHAT'S SICK-WE ARE HUMAN GUINEA PIGS!!!!
December 23 2010 at 8:04 AM Report abuse Permalink +12 rate up rate down ReplyMaybe we should go back to using glass and have some sort of mandatory recycling program. I know there are 400 reasons why we shouldn't/wouldn't/couldn't use glass, but if plastics and metals are this unsafe, maybe glass would be a better option.
December 23 2010 at 8:00 AM Report abuse Permalink +14 rate up rate down ReplyMost of this is unfounded fear mongering designed to expand the budget and power of the EPA. The true rates of learning disabilities, autism and related conditions are flat, not rising. The definitions have been changed to make the numbers larger. That's another way a special interest group can claim more of your tax money and expand their power. It's all about the money, not about your health.
