Barack Obama and Michael Vick Make Strange Political Bedfellows

When President Obama recently praised Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie for hiring convicted dog abuser Michael Vick when no one else would, was he channeling the spirit of the holiday season or laying political groundwork for the next election? I kept shaking my head when I first heard the story, wondering why in the world the president would choose Vick as his holiday example of giving people second chances when there have to be thousands of other stories of redemption and new leases on life that don't call up the issues of bloody dogfighting, animal cruelty, and special privilege that so often is bestowed on professional athletes.

According to reports of the phone call between the president and Lurie, Obama was pleased that the Eagles signed Vick because so few people get an opportunity to resume their jobs or professions after they get out of prison. There's no question that for most felons, getting a decent job after being released is a major challenge, especially in our current era of high jobless rates. For an already-high-profile NFL football player (who this year was elected to the Pro Bowl and could well lead his team to the Super Bowl), probably not so difficult.

So why praise the Eagles and Vick? Obama had to know there would be an outcry over whether a person who had committed such a despicable crime was worthy of laudatory mention, especially one who still has a multimillion-dollar career that 99.9 percent of convicted felons can only dream of. (That outcry hit its high point -- or perhaps its low point -- Tuesday when Tucker Carlson said on Fox News Channel that Vick should have been "executed.")

Obama's comments make more sense when viewed in the context of the 2012 election rather than Vick's story alone. First, Eagles owner Lurie contributed to Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, but he donated to Hillary Clinton's campaign first. It's probably a safe bet that Obama is hoping for Lurie's support in 2012 -- financial and otherwise -- but history shows that his backing isn't in the bag. While contributions from Lurie would be helpful, the bigger factor in culling favor with the man who owns the Eagles can be summed up in three words -- Pennsylvania's electoral votes.

Obama knows he's got some serious work to do between now and November 2012 to beat back the Republicans who have announced that job No. 1 for them is to make sure that he joins George H.W. Bush in the White House one-termer club. Pennsylvania is a must-win, and in light of the 2008 midterms, the Keystone State is a toss up. Making inroads with some constituencies that didn't like Obama so much the last time around like, say, blue collar sports fans in a state with 20 electoral votes has to be high on the president's re-election "to do" list.

You might say this theory is a stretch and that Obama was merely extending a message of hope during the holiday season when he chose to make Michael Vick the new face of non-recidivists. But since Republicans have already said "game on" to Obama, everything the president does or says from now on must be calculated to achieve one goal -- a second term.

With that prize in mind, I think it's safe to say that President Obama wants to make sure that as many Philadelphia Eagles fans as possible remember that he was with their team and with their ex-con star quarterback when they were getting close to a possible Super Bowl appearance.

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. I don't believe we should tolerate dishonesty in our elected officials regardless of race or political affiliation. Perhaps you feel differently...

Yes, all about campaigning.....couldn't possibly be because he's always supported "Second Chances for Convicts". It began as a State Senator for him, but you go with a "conspiracy theory" because he couldn't possibly care about this now, even though his AG has directly addressed and supported Second Chances for Convicts. Sometimes, it just is what it is!

Praising a cruel, entitled low life like Vick is Obama's last straw, as far as I'm concerned. I voted for him last time, of course there wasn't a good alternative, but I'll never vote for him again. He's just a politicain, looking out for number one. Reminds me of how he made a big deal about getting a shelter dog, then adopted one of Ted Kennedy's pedigreed animals. Full of baloney, all of them.

Do you believe Obama would have shown so much interest if Vick was a white player?...I doubt it....

Rob and Kathy, how do you feel about tolerating racism irrespective of race or political affiliation? You both seem to subscribe to the racist mentality that because President Obama is African American and Vick is African American then Obama is automatically interested. You also subscribe to the racist mentality that because President Obama is African American he has no interest in white people. Where are any facts to support your racist observation....I will answer the question posed to you because you undoubtedly will not....you have no evidence. If your racist theory were valid then Kanye West was correct... "George Bush does not care about Black people" indeed, according to your foul theory, no White President ever has.

An overt and intentional act is not a "mistake"...Especially when it is repeatedly committed ...

What then is your definition of a mistake?

Webster's defines a mistake as "to err."

And here are the actual words of Vick:

"First, I want to apologize, you know, for all the things that -- that I've done and that I have allowed to happen."

"I take full responsibility for my actions. For one second will I sit right here -- not for one second will I sit right here and point the finger and try to blame anybody else for my actions or what I've done."

"I'm totally responsible, and those things just didn't have to happen. It's just I made a mistake in using bad judgment and making bad decisions."

"Dog fighting is a terrible thing, and I reject it."

So to summarize: In his own words without a script in front of him, Vick apologized, takes full responsibility, does not blame anyone, and condemns dog fighting. And then he went to jail and served time.

What decent human being would complain that somehow this is not enough?

I will answer my own question....NO decent human being would ever whine, complain, or argue that this is not enough.

What a shallow, ugly article by this contributor.

I wonder what she tells her 5th grade daughter about forgiveness?

I wonder if this Mom tells daughter to hound or hate or "forever criticize" a person who has apologized and been punished for doing something wrong?

Also what "deep" insights this contributor has...President Obama celebrated a person getting a second chance during Christmas to get votes. Wow she must have done a ton of research to dig up that possibility.

For Christ sake you all can do better than this----can't you?

Will Obama and Holder feel that terrorists are fine people and should be forgiven.Ask Chicago police that have been killed by those who have served time for their crimes.Hitler could have been a gentleman if given a second chance.

Obama may have been trying to curry favor with blue-collar men in Pennsylvania, but he also lost votes by his act regarding Vick. Many progressives are already very disappointed with him for supporting tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. The praise he extended to the team that hired Vick is just too much for many people to stomach. Further, some penalties are disproportionate to crimes. The law that incarcerates people for smoking marijuana is far too harsh. Conversely, the laws against animal cruelty are far too lenient. I, and several others I know, will never vote for Obama again, given his serious lack of judgment.

The more one talks, the less one is heard -- this is particularly true of this POTUS.
He feels that he MUST comment on EVERYTHING that comes down the pipe no matter how trivial -- as if anyone cares what he thinks.
