New Hawaii Governor Wants to Put Obama Birther Debate 'to Rest'

Enough is enough. Hawaii's new governor, Neil Abercrombie, wants to put to rest the so-called birther controversy, possibly by releasing additional information to confirm that President Obama was indeed born in the 50th state on Aug. 4, 1961.

Abercrombie, a Democrat who knew Obama's parents, has asked the Hawaii's attorney general and health department if more records can be made public to stifle persistent false allegations that the president is not a natural-born citizen of the United States, according to the New York Times and The Hill newspaper. To become president, an individual must have been born in the United States and be at least 35 years old.

"It's an insult to his mother and to his father, and I knew his mother and father; they were my friends, " the exasperated governor told the Times in a phone interview. "It's an emotional insult. It is disrespectful to the president. It is disrespectful to the office. . . . Let's put this particular canard to rest."

Neil AbercrombieAbercrombie, who served 22 years in the U.S. House before his election as governor in November, told CNN he wants to do whatever it takes to quash the controversy and put the "birthers" in the "proper light, which is to say they have a political agenda not worthy of any good American."

"As quick as we can, we will" release more information, he said. "This is a transparent state in terms of our communication with one another. This is the Aloha state. We care for each other, we look out for each other."

Obama's parents are deceased. His father, Barack Obama Sr., was born in Kenya; his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, in Kansas. In 2008, the Obama campaign released a "certificate of live birth" for Kapiolani Maternity and Gynecological Hospital in Honolulu, CNN said. But critics -- who would become known as "birthers" -- demanded a copy of the actual birth certificate.

Abercrombie did not say whether he is considering making the birth certificate public, but he conceded he would not be able to convince some skeptics no matter what he put out. "Conspiratorial theorists are never going to be satisfied," he said. "This has gone into another area of political attack."

But he said he would press ahead because "it's a matter of principle with me."

The president and his family are spending the Christmas holidays on the island of Oahu, just outside of Honolulu.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I am impressed by the faith that the governor, and many liberals, have in use of facts to resolve an argument with the right wing, despite overwhelming evidence that the modern right is fact resistant. As an evidence based moderate myself, I find left and right to be wary of facts that might lead to an opinion contrary to one currently held. The difference is that frank exchange of information is part of the liberal value system, so they are bound by that value system to give the facts at least cursory consideration. The modern right's value system is not only faith-based, part of its value system is to resist all data presented from "authority." Presentation of facts will only harden their view that Obama was born anywhere other than Hawaii, because it is proof that the liberal media authority New World Order elite is hiding "the real truth." Governor, spend your time and Hawaiian tax dollars on more useful pursuits--this one's a time waster.

We just want to see a copy of the ORIGINAL birth certificate. I have a reproduction of my birth certificate, but it's NOT the original. Show us the ORIGINAL with its ORIGINAL seal. This is a reasonable request.

The supreme court cleared Obama's legal birth and the justices were MOSTLY REPUBLICAN, and they still don't believe, which means they are just bigots and would refuse to believe even if God verafied it. So just give up, the birthers are just idiots.

I am not a birther because the issue is all water under the bridge . But I do believe that an American citizen has a right to know that the birth certificate of the President is legitimate. I think that the President should take all measures to erase any doubt about that document. Why doesn't President Obama do that?

Birthers are not interested in the facts. They are racists, plain and siple, and you don't discuss facts with someone like that. You keep a very watchful eye on them in case they get out of hand; otherwise, you don't give them the vantage point of attention. (I'm a 63 year-old white guy who has lived all his life in Louisiana; although the state is certainly changing for the better, trust me, I know whereof I speak when it comes to seeing and hearing racism.) I'm so very proud of Mr. Obama as a man and as our president.

The "birthers" demand a copy of the actual birth certificate and if the Governor does not provide that copy the birthers will not be satisfied. The Governor is just wasting his time otherwise.
