On Passports, Mother and Father Will Soon Be 'Parent 1' and 'Parent 2'

Gay-rights proponents are cheering and some conservatives are up in arms after the State Department said it would replace the words "mother" and "father" on U.S. passport applications with gender-neutral terms.

Instead of "mother" and "father," the forms will read "parent one" and "parent two."

A statement on the agency's website called the changes "improvements" that are being made to provide a more accurate description "of a child's parents and in recognition of different types of families."

Brenda Sprague, deputy assistant secretary of State for Passport Services, told Fox News the new forms reflect the realities of the modern world.

"We find that with changes in medical science and reproductive technology that we are confronting situations now that we would not have anticipated 10 or 15 years ago," Sprague said.

Christian conservative organizations were quick to slam the forthcoming changes.

"Only in the topsy-turvy world of left-wing political correctness could it be considered an 'improvement' for a birth-related document to provide less information about the circumstances of that birth," Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said in a statement.

Perkins said the gender neutral terms were "designed to advance the causes of same-sex 'marriage' and homosexual parenting without statutory authority, and violates the spirit if not the letter of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)."

Under the 1996 federal law, marriage is legally defined as a union between one man and one woman.

Gay-rights supporters hailed the move toward gender neutral terminology.

"Changing the term 'mother' and 'father' to the more global term of 'parent' allows many different types of families to be able to go and apply for a passport for their child without feeling like the government doesn't recognize their family," Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of Family Equality Council, told Fox News.

Chrisler, who pushed for the changes for years, praised the government for recognizing that "the family structure is changing."

"The best thing that we can do is support people who are raising kids in loving, stable families," she said.

The State Department said the new passport applications will be available online next month.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. My goodness, the short-sightedness and the desire to dominate others in many of these posts is ridiculous.

To allred71, we already have gender neutral restrooms. Well, I do. Look in your house/apartment, is there a "Men" or "Women" sign on it? If not, it is GENDER NEUTRAL.

Parent 1 and Parent 2 are as good as Guardian 1 and Guardian 2. AS STATED, they represent multiple forms of family. Some may be of situations where a mother and step-father are the legal guardians... And if the old father was say, abusive then you sure wouldn't want to be FORCED to have that guy on your passport application--you'd want to LEGAL GUARDIANS.

"The National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior interviewed nearly 6,000 people nationwide between the ages of 14 and 94 found that 7 percent of women and 8 percent of men identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual" from Wikipedia. Population of non-heterosexual-identified people has never been as low as 5% as many here have said. And even if that was the case, that doesn't mean we should slam them into the ground for not having more numbers. Just because someone is in the minority doesn't mean all policy should actively and passively ignore them. The public sector is supposed to represent ALL and be inclusive. Period.

We can call them dog 1 and dog 2 it matters not the name as a rose by any other name still smells the same. A child is created, by a male sperm and a female egg, whether one is adopted or born to natural parents, the child is still created by a male sperm and a female egg. Even if done in a labratory dog 1 is a female and dog 2 is a male, no matter who gets the pups. The one area where there will NEVER be gender nutrality is the creation of off spring. No matter how many years someone is together, they can be bound together from the moment they were born, and unless a act of intercourse between dog 1 and dog 2 of the opposite sex occurs there wil never be off spring ONE. It is a fact, no matter what you call it, dog, parent, horse, flower, that fact will always remain the same. End of story.

Crazy I know some Fathers who are real Mothers! LOL So petty to have to throw gender or sexual orientation on the role of parenting and responsibility. I'm a Father to my own children, who was also a "parent" to 5 children who were not my biological children, call me what you want, just let me take of the child. To all the Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and Gay parents out there...."BRAVO" for caring for and loving a child who may grow up and never know what a "PARENT" is.

I think gay and bisexual people need to know that they have privacy rights too. Sometimes too much explanation actually makes things worse.

I think the state dept could have done better if they had put more thought into it. For example, circle one ( mother / guardian 1 ) ( father / guardian 2 ). Just saying

Romans 1:26 takes us further down the path of perversion, “For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.”

Today, our society calls homosexuality a preference. God has always called it a perversion. The Bible refers to it not just as “a sin”, but as “an abomination”. Verses 26-27 tell us four truths about homosexuality: it’s not natural, not normal, not noble, and not neutral. First, it’s not natural, notice Paul’s phrases, “against nature” and “leaving the natural use”. Robert Kronemeyer writes, “Homosexuals are made, not born. From my 25 years’ experience as a clinical psychologist I firmly believe homosexuality is a learned response to early painful experiences, thus it can be unlearned…” Second, it’s not normal. Paul says the homosexual “burns in his lust”. His desire is not a normal sexual desire. It’s an appetite out -of-control and misdirected. Third, it’s not noble. Paul says, “men with men committing what is shameful”. It’s a deformity of God’s intended order. It violates the sexual identities God created. Fourth, it’s not neutral. Penalties come with perversions. Paul says, “receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.” There are consequences. AIDS is one of them, but there are more, not the least of which is a seared conscience. There are many gays who are anything but happy and gay.

If you’re tempted by homosexual thoughts, or trapped in a gay lifestyle, God still loves you. Your sin is not the unpardonable sin. God is able to forgive you and set you free if you’ll repent and trust in Him.

Blessings in Him

So the reason given for the change is to make some people feel better. Sounds like the same left-wing BS to me. If they had not been able to get a passport, I would understand, but the changes are just plain stupid.

Oh please, let's get a mob together and riot over this now. Call the militia, compose a patriotic anthem, and march on Washington. What about the decades of divorced people coming together each with their own children, single people living together each one having children of their own already? Kind of late to get all indignant over something like this isn't it? The word "family" has been re-re-identified long before the gays demanded rights.
