Couple Aborts Twin Boys Because They Want a Girl Using IVF

The story of an Australian couple who aborted twin boys because they want to use IVF to ensure they have a daughter is attracting a lot of attention, especially among pro-lifers, and understandably so since the case seems to foreshadow an ethics-free future of eugenics.

But the couple, who want a girl to replace the infant daughter they recently lost, is so far still barred by Australian law from pursuing their quest for a female baby. The state of Victoria, where the unnamed couple lives, does not allow sex selection using IVF unless it is done to avoid the risk of the baby's inheriting a genetic abnormality or disease.

An independent group, known as the Patient Review Panel, recently rejected the couple's bid, so they are taking their case to the next level, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, which is to hear their arguments in March.

"After what we have been through we are due for a bit of luck. We want to be given the opportunity to have a girl," said the man. The couple already have three sons.

According to the Herald-Sun newspaper of Melbourne, which interviewed the couple, the woman, who is in her thirties, is "consumed by grief over the daughter who died soon after birth" and admits she has "become obsessed with having a daughter and it has become vital to her psychological health."

The husband told the newspaper that it was the couple's "right" to try this route. "It's ridiculous that sex selection is illegal, actually. For certain circumstances it should be legalized."

An Australian pioneer in IVF, Gab Kovacs, agreed. "I can't see how it could possibly harm anyone," he said.

"Laws should be made to protect people from things that are going to damage them. Why should we make this illegal? Who is this going to harm if this couple have their desire fulfilled?"

The couple told the Herald-Sun that if they lose their appeal they will go to the United States to conceive a girl. Unlike Australia and much of Europe, the U.S. does not regulate sex selection in embryos developed for IVF procedures, so couples from many countries come here to conceive.

If the couple does come to the United States, they could expect to generate as much notice as they have in Australia, even if what they want is not illegal.

When a prominent fertility clinic in California announced in 2009 that it would help prospective parents choose physical traits -- hair and eye color, for example -- as well as the gender of their child, it prompted so much outrage that the clinic was forced to put its plans on hold.

Sex-selective abortions also take place in some places in the United States, though the vast majority of Americans reject the practice as unethical, and because the procedure is often used to destroy female fetuses and preserves males.

That the Australia couple targeted their fetuses because they were boys certainly hasn't mollified American pro-life activists.

"[I]n a world where the IVF and sex-selection are technologically possible, the providence of God is not trusted, and laws pertaining to bioethics come to be based on what's possible rather than what's right, such battles are inevitable," Tom Crowe wrote at the web site of the conservative political lobby,

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. First off, I feel sorry for them losing they're daughter! I can't imagine the pain of losing a child...

These people wanted a daughter, and that's okay! but to abort twins just because of they're gender is horrific! this couple wanted another child, obviously. 1 little girl. But instead they were blessed with twins, twin boys...and what do they do? do they rejoice about being blessed with twins? NO. They ABORT them! just because they weren't girls! I thought a parent was suppose to love you unconditionally no matter what! not abort you because of your gender! It's even more horrific that these people are parents! they obviously don't love they're kid! just look at the article! those 2 little boys were they're kids and they flat out killed them! and what's worse is that they're obviously insane and need help fast! to keep aborting children until the desired child is found is horrible and inhuman! and nobody knows how much damage that does to your body! who knows, that very abortion could cause her to lose that little girl she's obsessed with having! This story just sickens me! these people do not deserve children! theirs millions of people who would have wanted those little boys! but these selfish people literally killed them!

I'm sorry but this couple seems to be trying to "replace" the daughter they lost by having another daughter. Every person is unique and the child they lost is sadly gone. They could have 15 more daughters and it won't bring back the one they lost. They need grief counseling, not IVF.

bayleon02 you are so right and this situation is so sick. They need counseling before anyone lets them have another child. This whole scenario is just one prime example of "people" that should not be allowed to reproduce or have children at all. I read the article and it is bad enough doctors allow gender specific practices, but to allow a couple to ABORT because it is the wrong gender is immoral to every degree even for a doctor!

I don't know how to comment on something like this, because i still cant wrap my brain around it...Could it be that deep down most feel "life " begins at conception?..

That is just sickening!

Just for the record, you don't have to identify as pro-life to be disgusted by this story, not specifically by the abortion but really by the overall idea of these people being parents at all--I suspect they'll even give this future daughter their dead child's name! I'd be curious to know why this woman couldn't just get therapy, like reasonable people do when they suffer a traumatic loss. It would be cheaper than IVF, and help much more quickly anyway.

I think you misunderstood Kovacs' quote. What he's referring to is whether it is harmful to select gender in IVF procedures. He's not making a comment to this particular couple and their abortion.

This can't be real!!! How can anyone be allowed to get an abortion just because they don't like the sex of the child(ren). If she intended to get pregnant then aborted this is murder!! What's the problem with adoption of the boy's and a girl for them? These people being allowed to conceive at all at this point should be banned!!!

Even if we leave the morality of the issue out of the debate, this couple should be barred from pursuing this procedure. The fact that they would willing kill their own children just because of their gender... well it proves that they aren't sane doesn't it? They should be seeking serious therapy for their mental issues - not trying to have a baby.

Could they not have given birth to the boys and placed them up for adoption?
My heart breaks for those babies, and for the couple's existing sons, who were lucky to be conceived sooner, rather than later, than their disposed of brothers.

I recently had a baby myself, and I cannot imagine how I would feel if something were to happen to my little boy. While I feel for this couple after the loss of their infant daughter, I in no way condone the act of aborting their twin boys. If they truly did not want them, why not put them up for adoption? There are so many couples out there who cannot conceive and would be happy to have even just one baby, let alone twins. Just because their parents did not want them, does not take away those babies' right to life, and it does not change the fact that God had a plan for them- a plan that will not be realized because of their parents' selfish decision.
