Ashley Turton, wife of the Obama administration's House of Representatives liaison, Dan Turton, was found dead in a burning car Monday morning, Roll Call and other news outlets are reporting.

Fire officials said it appeared the car crashed as it was pulling in or out of the garage behind a rowhouse in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C., at about 5 a.m. Neighbors dialed 911 after spotting the fire.

The body was discovered after fire crews doused the blaze. The fire also charred part of the garage. Nobody in the house was injured, fire officials said.

Ashley Turton worked as a lobbyist for the utility giant Progress Energy, according to Politico. She was a former staffer for U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn.

Ashley TurtonMetropolitan Police Lt. Nicholas Breul told Roll Call a joint investigation is underway. Homicide detectives were called to the scene.

"This could be just a tragic freak accident," Breul said, adding there was no indication that there was a crime committed.

The White House had no immediate comment on the incident.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I do harbor suspicions , use your head , how fast does anyone pull in or out of a garrage , there is usually alot of other crap in everyones garrage besides their car, ,Bicycles, lawn mowers barbcues, and the picture shows a town house, not the sort that has a lot of storage space, so you know there was other stuff in there. Also there are fuel shut off systems to prevent fires in collisions .so if she was going fast as they say , the airbags would have popped and the fuel system would have shut the injection system off,
this is very fishy , remember the manufacturers and insurance company test these vechicles by slamming them into concrete barrier walls at high speed and a good distance.
Not the possible scenario of making a turn into a drive and waiting for the door to open , and the question of high speed on exit, ? not possible for the distance traveled , a few feet ,and the car deforms enough to explode,NO .

Several years ago our Dodge Dynasty developed a fuel leak that could have been disastrous. When I got in the car, I thought I smelled gasoline when I started the engine. I left the engine running, exited the car, and opened the hood. One of the gas lines to the right side fuel rail was literally spewing gasoline. Needless to say, I stopped the engine. Gasoline was all over the engine. The gasoline tank was almost full. I still shudder to think what could have happened. This was a very nice car that had been well maintained. Did something like this happen to Mrs. Turton's car? We have to remember that the electric fuel pumps on today's vehicles really gush the fuel to the injectors on the engine. Yes, I am speculating here, but something like this could have happened. I am not ready to accuse anyone of committing a crime. This was a terrible tragedy.

i seriously doubt that a BMW or just about any car would burst in flames from a minor low speed collision unless it was already leaking fuel, autos with fuel injection usually maintain a fuel pressure of some 45psi on the fuel lines, if one of those lines was loose and leaking it wouldn't take much for a fire to get going but even then I'm fairly sure that it wouldn't burst in flames to the point where someone wouldn't have time to get out.
the garage does look pretty narrow but if she had enough room to get in the car she would've had enough room to get out, did she still have her seat belt on? was the shifter in park, reverse or drive?
did she die from the fire or smoke inhalation?
something doesn't jibe but then as with most of AOL's reporting it leaves a lot of details out.

Some of these folks should be ashamed to even get out of bed. Conspiracy theorists on boths sides...take a chill pill. In fact take ten. On second thought just take one, if you take ten it will just start another conspiracy.

The media as we know it is dead. I don't believe anything that you or anyone like
you says. You are just an arm of the government, spewing the regurgitated propa-ganda they tell you to. Call me a nut, loon, conspiricy kook whatever. Good luck
in the commie-green prison planet control-grid that you fruitcakes are baking for
yourselves.

This comment concerning Christopher Weber's article: "Wife of Mass. Rep John Tierney gets Prison time" ... I personally think it is ridiculous that a grown man can get away with publishing an article such as this one. A 3rd grader could tell you that a 30 day sentence is NOT a PRISON sentence! As a matter of fact; show me a prison that will take a prisoner for 30 days?!!
