The Right Tones Down the Rhetoric

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Forgive me, but I can't understand the rationale for the almost immediate politicization of the horrible events in Tucson. The "apparent" shooter has been described by those who have known him as being, at best, mentally unstable, prone to violent outbursts during in social settings, emotionally unpredictable, even prompting one of his college instructors to request that the school provide some sort of "security" presence when he was in her classroom. The individual responsible for this horror is, apparently, quite unstable at best. A former recent girlfriend even speculated that she thought he might actually be "faking insanity" to avoid the prospect of prison! In any case, judging by his actions, I cannot imagine anyone (of ANY political stripe) actually giving credence to any semblance of normalcy on his part. This seems to have been true in many, if not
most such incidents in past and/or recent history, e.g., the assassinations of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy (and/or attacks on other presidents and government figures.) It is quite likely a probable element in such horrors as the Columbine shootings, the murders of the Amish children at Nickle Mines, PA, et al.
These perpetrators were ALL apparently acting at best irrationally, if we're to believe the records. So, where does political motivation come into play??? These have all been (even in the case of alleged conspiracies) the acts of depraved minds. Is all politics, school attendance, religious belief, therefore
"depraved"??? The so-called Right Wing and the so-called Left Wing should BOTH tone down their rhetoric and look into a mirror when assigning "guilt"! This is a matter to be resolved by the criminal justice process (which, in the USA, is still the best in the world, IMHO). Does ANYONE really know how to eliminate this all-too-common threat??? In an imperfect world, folks, the answer is NO! Don't ask me to admit to some "collective guilt". These prospective perpetrators, unfortunately, do exist among us,...always have and always will, despite gun control, social engineering, and what have you. Rather than sharing some nebulous sense of guilt, we should all share in the victimization, and deal with it accordingly. For my part, I can only hope and pray that those who suffered at the hands of this maniac will somehow find consolation, knowing that they have all the sympathy and support we can give them.

Oh my God are you people for real? I know you have a PC so why don’t you do a little research on it OK? Type in ANTI BUSH RALLIES and see the HATE and ANGER those protestors were showing toward the President of the United States…death threats, bull’s-eye on his forehead, shirts that read “The only good Bush is a DEAD Bush” photos of them burning his image, walking around with a noose around the neck of a cardboard Bush, Bush with Hitler face or as the Devil and so on and so on, and did anyone run out and shoot him? I was never a Bush fan but that was the last straw for me, did you EVER see that footage on the news? NO, and why? He was the President his life was threatened and NO NEWS coverage…….. For 22 years I drank the Cool Aid and voted democrat that was until I went on my PC and found those photos. As an Independent I for one am SICK and TIRED of the double standards, do yourself a favor and do some research, YOU too will find out that the Liberal party is not so meek and mild after all.

I haven't heard anybody blame the right for the heated rhetoric. I've heard both sides being blamed, though it is without question far more prevalent on the right, and has been for a long time.
.
That being said, I believe the heated rhetoric had more than a little to do with the shooting. A "friend" of Laughner's has reportedly said that Laughner wasn't interested in politics and didn't watch tv. But nobody lives in a vacuum. And it is just coincidental that a target is depicted over Giffords and then one of her own constituents attempts an assassination of her. Giffords, herself, had predicted that the map on PalinPac's web page would have consequences. I wonder if Giffords had predicted those consequences would be so horrible.

I truly do hope the right will tune down the polarizing rhetoric that is dividing our country into two classes, the patriots and the liberals....which is utterly absurd! But I am not hearing anyone from the right take any responsibility for contributing to an unhealthy political climate. All I am reading is that they are aghast that the right is being linked to an act of violence by an unstable gunman. Of course, the right did not pull the trigger, but we do not live in a vacuum, and the media does influence the political climate. Yes, both sides are not guiltless, but the right has been more open with their vitriol for the left. My sister and I were aware of the crosshairs map and said to each other that something like this was sure to happen. No man is an island, and if we condone violent rhetoric ( and violent bumper stickers) then we should expect violence. If politicians like Angle can say what she did and not be openly chastised by her party, then that is condoning violent rhetoric. I hope talk radio has learned something from this since the Tides Foundation affair did little to change the targeting of the left.

Oh, of course, only the right uses polarizing rhetoric. Really? After so many years of listening to "Nazi, dictator, evil, stupid Bush/Cheney (of whom I am no fan), maybe the left should take a look at themselves. Of course, when the left uses such vitriol, they are only speaking the truth - in their minds. Being one of those described by Obama as "bitter, clinging to guns and religion" while he was in the safety of a liberal bastion, I've listened to plenty of left wing hate. Look at the signs at pro-immigration rallies. Of course, NBC, CBS, ABC and CNN don't show that. Its intellectually dishonest to only mention one side or the other's over the top rhetoric. The left wing press and leadership is taking cynical advantage of this tragedy to score political points and stifle criticism. Just make sure your standards are the same for everyone.

I see that these two have jumped on the liberal bandwagon of accusing the right of being responsible for the loud political rhetoric. If there is loud political rrhetoric, it comes from both sides and has been from the left since the shootings in Tuscon.
