Americans Still List Jobs as Top Problem, but Concern Over the Deficit Grows

Americans still put the issue of unemployment and jobs at the top of their list of the problems that the country faces in the new year, followed closely by concerns about the economy in general, but while the percentage of those who cited the growing federal deficit as the No. 1 problem is far behind, the number of those who cite it is creeping up, according to a Gallup poll conducted Jan. 7-9.

Republicans and tea party movement activists put a heavy focus on the deficit issue during the campaign and, aside from the repeal of health care, GOP leaders have vowed to make deficit reduction a top priority in the next congressional session.

The deficit is a particularly tricky area because while concern may be rising and polls say most Americans want action on cutting the red ink, they also oppose the majority of proposals that may be necessary to accomplish that.

Economy and jobs and deficitTwenty-nine percent of Americans told Gallup that jobs and unemployment was the top issue followed by 26 percent who named the economy in general. While the percentage of those citing jobs was up from 24 percent just before the new year, the 26 percent who singled out the economy in general was the lowest number since May.

The percentage who named the deficit as the No. 1 problem rose to 12 percent, more than double what it was last Fall and the highest figure Gallup has recorded in at least a decade.

Among non-economic problems, the only two issues in double-digits that were named as the most important facing the country today was health care at 13 percent (poor health care, high costs) and the conduct of government, Congress and politicians at 11 percent.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Economy First

The promises and commitment of the elections of November from the winners have already started to fade. Patriotism first?
The first order for Congress and the Senate should be addressing ‘unemployment’ instead of spending the next two years fighting across party lines over the health bill. We Americans can endure a lot of Washington’s political games in the past ,but we can not ignore this high unemployment with no clear answers; we can’t ignore housing at it’s all time low since 1959; we can’t ignore over one million homes in foreclosure in 2010 with more coming in 2011.
If we can’t work, we can’t support our families, feed our families, shelter our families and educate our children. So goes the ‘American Dream’.
The health plan can’t help American’s now. Congress and the Senate should focus on these issues and since they have less than two years left.
We American statistically have given up on party lines and will be out voting in force in 2012.

I am 73 years old and Social Security is my only income. I lost my Wife of 53 years this past February. Her $615 dollar income is gone also. My electric rate per kilowatt hour quadrupled from 2004 to 2008. My electric bill used to be around $100 dollars a month. It is now nearing $400 dollars per month! Gasoline is going back up to $4 dollars, or more per gallon. Food has gone up drastically and clothing is getting more expensive. Everything I buy has increased in cost, due to the drastic environmental expenditures and the draconian mandates from the EPA. We need to get back to using our God-given fossil fuels! We have enough coal, un-tapped oil and natural gas to last for a century or more. We are the Saudi Arabia of Coal! We could let Private Industry do the environmental stuff. Our Government has spent Billions of dollars on moonshine and soy bean juice! If we got back to using our Natural fuels, we could put EVERYBODY back to work, almost immediately. And they would be permanent, high paying jobs. Isn't the EPA supposed to get permission from Congress, to enact their costly mandates? Stop funding them. Please! I am going to be on the streets before long! I cannot handle the high energy costs! Thank You.

You're not in your position because of the EPA, sir. Not by a long shot. Fossil Fuels have more power than you can even dream of. An entire war and an entire century of wars was based on fossil fuels and control of Mid East resources, of which we are sorely dependent. A quick look at government cost data will show you how minuscule EPA costs really are. In fact, the largest part of the government budget, aside from the untouchable Dod bill, is social security and Medicare. Want to cut those government costs? That's what will send you to the street. Please, think about the logic of your position and do not vote against your own interests.

If there were $4.3 trillion dollars going into the US Treasury every decade and then it stopped wouldn't we have less money to pay our bills???
This is what happened between 2000 and 2008. Foreign goods coming into the US were assessed a duty but not collected because of trade deals. Trade deals are killing American business, US corporations leave to save operating costs unleveling the playing field. Protect American business, raise the tariffs, restore jobs, there are no foreign goods we cannot make here. Put Americans to work raise the tariffs 8-10% across the board.

It is time to cut spending. Democrat politicians have bragged wildly about "draining the swamp" while covering for their cronies and doing nothing effective to go after waste, fraud, and abuse in Federal programs. Meanwhile, we careen into the largest chasm of debt in the history of the world, with not one reason to believe more hollow promises of jobs or efficient government.
If you find yourself going broke, it is time to stop digging the hole deeper. All federal revenues come from taxing the earnings of private industry wage earners directly or through hidden taxes. Now is the time to cut federal jobs and let private industry up for air before it drowns.

Corp. tax in america is 35% canada is now 16.5%. EPA is going to put a carbon tax on CO2. Healthcare cost for companies are going through the roof. New regulation are handicuffing business. Stimulus was use to bail unions not businesses. To create jobs abd keep them in america this antibusiness rethoric has to stop. They are not the enemy they are the job creators. This adminstration has to stop the class warfare and race warfare and try to help create jobs.

If the leftwing liberal lunatics are done insulting Americans intelligence with their "smear machine" maybe we can focus on the ceiling debt. Just don't bother getting a liberals opinion, rofl... it'd be tantamount to asking Baghdad Bob, rofl. Liberals can have lamestream media, its proven to be worthless at reporting facts/truth anyway!

What about Fox and all the conservative media outlets? Are they not --more or less--public relations for the republican party. I never see both sides of an argument with Hannity, limbaugh and company.I do see both sides with CNN.Even MBNBC is more balanced then Fox and thats hard to belive for even me.It would be fair to say, however;that Fox is republican and MSNBC tends to be democratic.MSNBC is more balanced and professional news outlet then FOX.There are lunatics on the right also. For balance you have to listen and consider all sides, even the ones you hate.

The same things that the American public was concerned about during the election of 2008, in 2011, they're the same ones. Great job so far, that learn as you lead the country thing is working out well.

As long as we keep doing what we are doing this country is headed to disaster . Spending will be the end of us if we do not do something now not later. Increasing the deficit ceiling is a tough call but maybe it is the pain that we must begin to go thru .
