Former Peace Corps director and vice-presidential nominee, R. Sargent Shriver, has been hospitalized outside of Washington, according to a spokeswoman at the medical center where he was admitted. The 95-year-old Shriver is the brother-in-law of former President John F. Kennedy.

Ronna Borenstein-Levy of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md., could not provide details on Shriver's condition or when he was hospitalized, but said the family has directed a spokesperson for the Special Olympics to provide updates on his condition.

In 2003, Shriver announced he had Alzheimer's disease, according to the Associated Press.

Shriver worked for many years with his wife, the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, on the Special Olympics, an organization she founded in the 60s. The two had five children, including Maria Shriver, the wife of former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Shriver was also the running mate of George McGovern in the 1972 presidential election.

A lifelong activist, Shriver was a founder of other well-known organizations helping a broad spectrum of people, including Head Start, VISTA, The Shriver Center, and Job Corps.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

How would this play under Obamacare? Would his age mean a thumbs-down from the "treatment review" panel, or would his political connections assure limitless treatment?
Points to ponder as we wish him and his family the best possible outcome.

God bless him. A true renaissance man; a man for the ages.
