Hawaii 'Birther' Bill Would Give Obama Records to Anyone -- for $100

For a mere $100, you too could have proof of the truth -- if Hawaii lawmakers have their way. Several state legislators are promoting a bill that would make President Obama's birth records generally available to the public to end speculation -- much of it on the Internet -- that he was born outside of the United States.

The legislation, offered by five Democratic state lawmakers, would authorize release of birth records to anyone requesting them and paying a $100 fee. It is another attempt to dispel the rumors and quiet so-called birthers, who question Obama's legitimacy on constitutional grounds. Article II stipulates that "no person except a natural born citizen . . . shall be eligible to the Office of President."

In 2008, the Obama campaign released copies of records showing that he was born in Honolulu in 1961, but birthers think otherwise and have clamored for more information. "If [the bill] passes it will calm the birthers down," state Rep. Rida Cabanilla, the prime sponsor, told the Associated Press. "All these people are still doubting it because they don't want the birth certificate from Obama. They want it from our state office."

Under an existing state privacy law, the records can only be released to someone with a tangible interest, such as a family member. Obama's parents are deceased. His father was born in Kenya, his mother in Kansas.

Money coming to the state under a release-for-fee plan would offset the extra work for state employees, who would likely be hounded by demands for the records, and perhaps help the state cope with a budget deficit projected at $800 million over the next two years.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie, a friend of Obama's family, had wanted to tamp down the rumors by releasing some of the records on his own, but he scrapped that idea last week after the state's attorney general said the privacy law wouldn't allow it, according to the New York Daily News.

The legislation has a long way to go. Hawaii House Democratic leaders have yet to even schedule a public hearing, a prerequisite for serious consideration.

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. To grow up and attend school in Indonesia would have required any citizen of any
country to give up said citizenship.

Why would a person professing any 'open' admin. spend so much $$$ (couple of million tax dollars) hiding their history? Does it make sense to you?

nuff said.

Birthers are just crazy tea party people who have nothing else better to do than down the US President. If Texas just would have separated and became its own country then we would have been saved from 8 years of total and utter disaster for the working people of this country.

MyGOD I'm not saying OB is or isn't a US citizen, but you know this whole thing could have been avoided if he would have just submitted All of his information as required just like All of our other presidents had to do. What makes him any different?

Great idea! In fact, why not charge $1,000 -- or even TEN thousand??? Shouldn't ne any problem to get enough people to collect the $10k even to satisfy themselves for once and for all.

Then maybe the world would get a rest. . . .

My only question is if this was all resolved and proven then why did this newly elected democratic governor go looking for his birth certificate? 2. When questioned by a reported by name of Evens about how the search was going stated he could not find any evidence of Obama being born in Hawaii (as per evens)3. right after this the attorney general announced the governor could not release any info without Obama's consent (Hawaii state law).3. Then we have a recording posted on the internet of the reporter in a conversation with a Hawaiian radio talk show host stating what the governor supposedly told him.4. the next day he recants his story.5. Now legislators in Hawaii want to pass a bill to sell copies of Obama's certificate I live birth without Obama's permission. At this point people are having problems in what to believe and then add the fact he will not release school records. all this is doing is placing more reasonable doubt in voters minds which could effect the outcome of the 2012 elections.

What would it cost to get a copy of the two newspapers who ran his birth the day after he was born.
