Toxic Chemicals in Drinking Water Will Have to Meet New EPA Standards

The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday announced plans to set standards for perchlorate and 16 other toxic chemicals found in drinking water supplies.

The new regulations include a proposal to establish the first-ever national standard for perchlorate, a naturally occurring and man-made chemical found in rocket fuels that has been linked to thyroid problems. Perchlorate has contaminated water supplies in at least 26 states, according to the EPA.

The decision to set new perchlorate rules reverses a Bush administration finding that a national standard for the chemical was unnecessary.

Separately, the EPA said it would move toward establishing regulations for 16 other toxic chemicals that may pose risks to human health.

On its website, the agency said it will begin addressing contaminants in groups "so that enhancement of drinking water protection can be achieved cost effectively."

Wednesday's announcement follows a review of national drinking water standards ordered last year by EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.

"Our decisions are based on extensive review of the best available science and the health needs of the American people," Jackson said.

The EPA said it would take up to four years to institute the new rules.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

Be watchful for the concentrations set as limits: today's technologies can detect chemicals at atomically-small levels. I want clean air and water; zero is not better than low enough if getting from low enough to zero means going without, or huge cost increases.

The EPA won't be satisfied until they have the ability to regulate microscopic dust particles occuring naturally in the air. They will bankrupt America, this is their ultimate goal, townships, cities and states do not have the money to keep up with the ever changing mandates being handed down by the federal government.
