John Boehner Denies C-SPAN Request for Increased Coverage of House

New House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has denied a request by C-SPAN for permission to cover more of the debate on the House floor.

The public affairs network had sent Boehner a letter in November asking him to allow its cameras the freedom to capture wide shots of the chamber and also to catch lawmakers' reactions while their colleagues are holding forth. Currently C-SPAN is limited to static shots that are controlled by Congress.

Boehner responded via letter late Thursday, informing C-SPAN officials that their request would not be accommodated.

"I believe the American people -- and the dignity and decorum of the United States House of Representatives -- are best served by the current system of televised proceedings provided by the House Recording Studio," he wrote.

On Friday the network issued a statement expressing disappointment with the speaker's decision.

"We continue to feel that the public is best served by seeing a more complete picture of the legislative process than what's delivered by Congressionally-controlled cameras and will continue to work with Speaker Boehner and other leaders in the House in hope of one day gaining access on behalf of the media," the C-SPAN statement read.

In making the request late last year, network officials used Boehner's own words to make their argument. Early in 2010 Boehner called for greater television access to debate over President Obama's health care legislation.

"Every issue of national import should be debated by the people's elected representatives in full public view," C-SPAN cited from a Boehner letter sent in January 2010.

C-SPAN made similar requests to Republican Newt Gingrich in 1994 and Democrat Nancy Pelosi in 2006, as they prepared to take over as speaker. Those requests were also denied.

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. We are a media age and they are elected officials. Republican or Democrat we as voters put them there. Now I don't know about any of the rest of you. But any job I've ever held it was possible for my supervisor to randomly appear at my job site. I think cameras should be allowed at all times so that we the people who vote to put them into office, pay taxes to support their salary have every right to see just what they are doing to earn our vote and money every step of the way and with every vote on the floor. I don't care what your party is I think it should be acceptable by all.

I agree wholeheartedly wmohardman. What we the people FAIL to realize is the Repub nor Dems don't care about us we the people. Its about them and their family and Close friends, period. They try and succeed at dividing us playing race card, poor against middle class, and laugh ALL the way to the bank. For an example WHY are convicted felon legislators receiving pension in jail. WHY. We should ALL get together regardless of the color of our skin and vote every body OUT, to show what we are made of. You with me.

Once again the Liberals on this board have not only missed the point of the exercise but have also, like the vaunted genius of the Left Chris Matthews, fabricated a narrative having nothing to do with what is in evidence. Try to follow the boucing ball:

C-Span routinely requests this extra freedom of camera coverage for it's own purposes. The camera coverage would simply, as described in the article, allow for reaction shots to rhetoric and for wider chamber shots showing the activity or lack of activity of members of either party. Which gains us what exactly?

The request doesn't affect deliberations or 'secret' deals, etc. so loved by the paranoid. It is simply for more cult of personality, he-said/she-said nonsense which would no doubt make its way to the Mainstream Media on a nightly and of course, pre-selected basis. Let's see ... NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, et al, would somehow magically show the same clips while FOX would show not only what the others showed but something representing another perspective. Gee, what a change that would be from what we have now.

The complete lack of intellectual quality from the Left is always expected but is also reaching breathtaking proportions lately. Yet another proof that having the highest dollar spent per student ratio of all western countries yields us nothing but more of the same. This is what government does best.

Dems ran on transparency that never happened while they ran America's House for years. Interesting but unsurprising we don't hear CNN whining about that promised transparency or Pelosi for not allowing them more access.

So much for "transparency" from the Republicans........... let's see...they claim JOBs is their #1 priority........so far they have tried to overturn the Healthcare Reform Act and failed...no new jobs there.........and then the next great law for them was on ANOTHER anti abortion funding measure that ALSO has no bearing on the fact it is ALREADY illegal to use federal funds for abortion....... jobs created so far? ZERO...

Not sure where you get your info but it is Dems who run endlessly on transparency that has never transpired, not the GOP.

What would the GOP Transpire they haven't done anything to show other than gripe moan and groan about whats already been done. Whu not let the cameras in so the public can stop fighting over lies and twisted truths because thats all we are getting now from both sides if either is telling th truth

Why now? Where was this "demand" during the health care debate? It's only now becasue the Republicans are in control of the house. Why not ask the same of the senate? Maybe because the democrats still control the senate (until 2012).

Why now, Cupcake? The demand came from the Republicans. The Republicans campaigned promising transpency. The Republicans promised Congress being the PEOPLE'S HOUSE. . Here we see Republican Promises Broken one after the other. Guess they'll need to be voted out come 2012 to show them we won't tolerate broken campaign promises.

Apparently the republicans don't want people to see them cutting, slashing and repealing programs for the middle class while giving more huge tax cuts to the wealthy.

I find it entertaining reading these posts with Democrats blaming Republicans for all the problenms and vice-versa. When are you going to realize we have to be AMERICANS first, rather than label ourselves as a Party member. You will notice the article says the same request has been turned down in the past by Gingrich(R) and Pelosi(D).As you can see none of these lying,self-serving,thieving weasels give a crap about the peoples requests for transparancy. None of them want a true wide shot of the chambers showing only a handful of Representatives there at any given time while the rest are out golfing ,having lunch with the Lobbiests,or on a taxpayer paid "fact finding mission" to ::: (fill in the blank):: warm counntry during the winter. We cleaned out a lot of the deadwood last election and we need to do the same each election until we get performance. Be an INDEPENDENT AMERICAN!!!

Does anyone realize little or nothing is gonna change? Representative Andy Harris, a conservative Republican Maryland physician recently elected to Congress on an anti-Obamacare platform, was sworn in to office and immediately demanding to know why his government-subsidized health care plan takes a month to kick in. He was incredulous when informed that federal law mandated that his government-subsidized health care policy would take effect on Feb. 1 – 28 days after his Jan. 3rd swearing-in. This ma, who campaigned strongly against "universal health care" was frustrated and angry when he and his family would have had to not have health insurance (provided by government benefits) for a WHOLE MONTH ! This is the hypocrisy of NEWLY elected representatives. Next time, OUT WITH him !

The Republicans promised government responsive to the people. Now that they were elected they think we will have forgotten their promises. Come 2012 the American public will likely be ready to show them the exit door and until we elect responsible representatives, it's going to be a continuous revolving door.

When John Boehner campaigned, it was all about the House of Representatives belonging to the People. Now that Boehner has a two-year lease occupying the office of the Speaker, he wants to limit public access to the "People's House". Clearly he and the new Republican majority didn't mean what they said when they campaigned to be elected. In reality, they really don't want their constituents too close or to know too much about what they are doing or what they're not doing.
