Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) is leaving Congress to become the president and CEO of the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, according to multiple reports Monday.

Harman, who was first elected to the House in 1993, is expected to announce her resignation Tuesday, according to NBC News.

Politico said Harman telephoned House colleagues Monday morning to inform them of her decision, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.).

The Woodrow Wilson Center is a bipartisan think tank devoted to political scholarship. Harman, a foreign policy and intelligence expert, will succeed former Rep. Lee Hamilton, who has led the Wilson Center for 12 years.

NBC points out that Harman's California district is reliably Democratic. A special election will be called to replace her.

Democratic leaders have not commented on Harman's decision.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

I think it's a shame congress is losing another experienced member who actually has something to contribute. Harman's foreign policy and intelligence experience was a valuable asset to congress. When we see people like her, and Chuck Hagel leaving congress. We should all be concerned. But who can blame them... it seems as though congress is being dumbed down. Eventually all we will have is a dysfunctional group of people with no experience, who can't govern, and who's only concern will be wether or not they can get re-elected.

In reading the comments after reading the news clip -- it appears that too many like to put knee-jerk reactions on paper. Doing a little research would show qualifications, that there is no need for a "promotion" financially, and that she will be an asset to the new position. The comment of David Doerr is well taken and it would be beneficial to most of the other poison pens to really sit down and think about what has happened to our nation, to the world, without the principles established in the Bible.

trobin9: ---- Whatever California has become, has been attributed to Proposition 13 which was pushed hard for passage by Howard Jarvis, a Republican business man, lobbyist and politician. No governor since then has been able to fix the negative effects this has had on the state and the schools. The Democrats were AGAINST this property tax issue. CA is rated somewhere around 48 out of all the states, for their schools as a result of this lack of property taxes to properly fund schools. My brother lives there and complains about it all the time. We live in Ohio, and my grandkids are getting a better education than his grandkids in CA ... and even more so for special needs kids. CA doesn't like to advance the disabled kids because they need to hang on to the federal funding they get to hold them back in Special Ed and receive all the extra services.

Sorry to tell you the truth, but it's not Prop 13 that has ruined California Schools, it's illegal aliens and welfare recipients who take no pride nor effort into raising their children and leave them at school. Our schools are properly funded, their just administered wrong and have a poor population.

She lost her Chair seat on a big committee so she will leave. Its not the money that she is going to a new job, she is one of the richest people in Congress if not THE richest. She is loaded.

There is NOTHING bipartisan about the Woodrow Wilson Center, purely progressive.

Another politician goin' for the cash - so let's please stop the Dem v Rep thing and get real. She does set a precedent and motivation for her successor, however. Her district must afford a viable network for personal gain.

Did the article say anything about her being a billionaire? If so, I missed it, and I seriously doubt that she is.

Why is Jane leaving? Google her name! Rep. Jane Harman , the California Democrat with a longtime involvement in intelligence issues, was overheard on an NSA wiretap telling a suspected Israeli agent that she would lobby the Justice Department to reduce espionage-related charges against two officials of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, the most powerful pro-Israel organization in Washington.

Harman was recorded saying she would “waddle into” the AIPAC case “if you think it’ll make a difference,” according to two former senior national security officials familiar with the NSA transcript.

In exchange for Harman’s help, the sources said, the suspected Israeli agent pledged to help lobby Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., then-House minority leader, to appoint Harman chair of the Intelligence Committee after the 2006 elections, which the Democrats were heavily favored to win.

Sorry, Jim, but you have it backward. God is not out of the state--the state is out of God. The state may not impose a specific God as a state religion. There is no "separation of church and state" in the constitution, despite the reigning theory.
