Caplan is not alone in his view. In his 2008 book, "Doubt Is Their Product: How Industry's Assault on Science Threatens Your Health," David Michaels wrote, "While some may exist, I have yet to see an Exponent study that does not support the conclusion needed by the corporation or trade association that is paying the bill." Michaels, who wrote the book before becoming assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health, declined to comment for this story. While my heart is with the writer's thesis, the journalism is deliberately misleading. Theme (1) is that government could be influenced by industry. Ok, I'm with you. Theme (2) is that Exponent is evil because it has corporate clients. Well, not necessarily. Theme (3) is that the corporate clients via the indicated study are influencing the government. WAIT -- the study is funded by the UK government, not industry! The juxtaposition of claims is misleading and deliberately gives a reader a false idea.
Incidental Theme (4) is the UK government is inherently evil... WHAT? No facts just a hand wave and guilt by reverse association. In fact, it appears the UK government is very interested in finding a possible link or they needn't have funded the study. So factually, we have the UK funding a study, and some of that money goes to the US government scientists for help. My evil meter isn't ticking very hard here.
Implied theme (5) is there is a big cover up -- WHERE? It seems clear the author had full and easy access to the CDC foundation, the Exponent scientists, and NOISH scientists, who simply listed the facts for her. My evil meter just dropped into the *yawn and go home* zone. You had my good will but you blew it.
I'm for bashing evil corporations as much as the next guy, but please don't fabricate points by picking on what appear to be honest scientists and agencies doing their job with full disclosure. I am fairly sure there is actual evil to be outted, but not anywhere in your examples.
My wife developed Parkinson's disease around age 32/33, she was diagnosed at 34. She has participated in studies to see if there is a common thread. The most common thread is agricultural chemical exposure. This is not news to me, we have been aware of this link for nearly 20 years. Farm workers have been developing tremors for years, decades even.
She is now 60 and has had two brain surgeries and has taken medicine since her diagnosis. She is on SSI and leads a mostly normal life with complications. She is preparing to have her stimulators replaced.
If the republicans had their way she would not have insurance.
Thank the republicans for this. They don't wan't gov't 'interference' with the private industry. Let them run free and this is what you get!

Please know this a very dangerous chemical among others for agricultural use. I have been diagnosed with Mutiple Chemical Sensitivities. I have MS symptoms, am unable to go out in public or live a normal life. Treatment is very expensive and life long.
I worry daily what these chemicals are doing to our children first of all. Birds and other wild life are also effected. Where does it end????
I agree, this is outrageous. These tests need to be done by an independent agency, as well as by the appropriate government agency without receiving any funding from the companies involved, and by the company/industry itself, and then compared. Scientific research should be impartial.

February 12 2011 at 4:18 PM Report abuse Permalink -3 rate up rate down ReplyDoes it really matter what party you identify yourself with, or for that matter , your source of information , be it fox or cnn , they are just the modern version of the roman coliseum .
Just a major distraction for the people while we get duped by both sides , just look at the political lobbyists and contributers.
Same game of distraction, if you think this is a real democracy your kidding yourself.
the politicians all serve the same corporate masters, and each year they continue to play the merger game.
And as new laws are enacted against your personal choices , as in New York's kingdom of Bloomberg , the only winner is the bottom line, not the people
My God. This is outrageous. This study should only be conducted by scientest's someone who don't have any interest in the outcome; other than revealing facts.
The influence of big business on the health of our citizens - a huge percentage that cannot afford to deal with the health consequences of these decisions - is criminal. Just plain old criminal. I sometimes feel like I can't tell the difference between the activities of the Mob and those of our "leaders."
Anyone who supports this arrangement should be investigated to determine who in their family or whether their campaign is receiving a kickback or financial consideration.
We are surrounded by crooks. And I didn't name any names.
Corporations DO rule our lives.
At least with the Mob , you know where you stand, and they have the decency to let you know, before they shoot you and burry you in the Meadowlands.

February 12 2011 at 3:44 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyThis attempted cover up of how paraquat the herbicide used by the U.S. government to kill the marijuana fields of Mexico is disturbing to say the least. With it's insane attempts to control every aspect of our lives the government used that dangerous compound not caring that it would not only kill pot but would be shown to be a hazard to humans as well. I am a liberal from the Commonwealth of Virginia. May our Lord grant us poor sinners mercy and our nation and ourselves prosperity and courage in these latter times
