It wasn't exactly a let-'em-eat-cake moment, but House Speaker John Boehner seemed to have an air of detachment when asked about the potential for federal workers losing their jobs under proposed Republican budget cuts.
President Obama has added 200,000 employees to the federal payroll since taking office in January 2009, Boehner said. "And if some of those jobs are lost in this, so be it -- we're broke," he added at a weekly briefing with Capitol Hill reporters. "It's time for us to get serious about how we're spending the nation's money."
The House, under Boehner's command, is considering legislation this week that would cut $61 billion from current spending in an effort to rein in huge budget deficits.
(Update: one of the victims Wednesday was a job-creator in Boehner's suburban Cincinnati district -- a General Electric plant that is helping develop an alternative jet engine for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter plane. Unwanted by the Defense Department, the House cast a bipartisan 233-198 vote to eliminate funding for the project, a savings estimated at up to $3 billion dollars. Boehner didn't back down. He ended his weekly news conference Thursday with a quip: "Read my lips, we're going to cut spending," the Associated Press reported.)
It is not clear where Boehner got the number 200,000 for the added government jobs, nor is it known at this point how many spots would be wiped out by the pared-back budget proposal, which would also have to clear the Senate. The Washington Post, crunching Bureau of Labor Statistics figures, said the number of new jobs under Obama was more like 58,000.
On the political front, the Democratic National Committee took quick notice of Boehner's "so be it" remark. "If this is the attitude of Speaker John Boehner when it comes to saving existing jobs, it's no surprise he's moving forward with draconian spending cuts that will cost even more," a DNC spokesman said.

Another blanket proposal that is only good for political rhetoric and does not get to the dirt. The wrong jobs and programs will be cut or those that are in disfavor of the corporate pupeteers. For instance there are government people getting paid 80,000 dollars a year to go around and fine people for lighting a fire in the wrong woodstove,or the completely outdated emisssions control stations along with countless other organizations that are having to constantly reinvent themselves at the cost of our freedoms to justify their gravy train government handout jobs and flow of revenue. The working poor have sacrificed enough, it is time for government to face reality or the rath of the people
February 17 2011 at 11:18 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyThe fact is that every cent of a Federal worker's salary and benefits must be taken OUT of the earnings of private industry workers. Thus, it is essential to make certain that every Federal employee returns services of such value that it justifies the reduction in private industry employees' earnings. I do not think we are "there" yet, and Obama has already increased Federal payroll headcount by 200,000. Are you feeling helped?
February 16 2011 at 7:19 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyObama figured if he added as many federal jobs as he could it would make him look good regardless of the cost or if the jobs were actually neccessary. According to Pelosi if they all collect unemployment it would help the economy. And these are the people that are supposed to recover our prosperity.
February 16 2011 at 6:18 PM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplyThe first question that comes to mind is---How many of John Boehner's staff will lose their jobs in Washington and Ohio?---Those people are federal employees too. I'd have to be that he would consider all of them 'vital' and none will get the axe!
February 16 2011 at 5:40 PM Report abuse Permalink +5 rate up rate down ReplyI'd be happy to see Boehner's staff cut, too. Lord knows, hundreds of thousands in the private industries that pay taxes have seen jobs vanish during Biden's "summer of recovery".
February 16 2011 at 7:21 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyOf course he got the number wrong unless he was counting temporary jobs that have already gone away. The Federal government has created 58,000 permanent jobs, not 200,000. Well, Mr Boehner, it's nice to see the Republicans in the house doing something about jobs...I'd rather it be creating them instead of destroying them, but...
February 16 2011 at 2:28 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyWe need tax reform at the individual and corporate level. Adopt the Deficit Commission recommendations. Add a fourth bracket for individuals at $750K with a 5% increase, no schedule A, no exemptions, no tax credits. Get the other 47% who pay no taxes today into the game. I'm sick of supporting them!
February 16 2011 at 2:08 PM Report abuse Permalink +10 rate up rate down ReplyThey cannot even decide who is the private sector that creates jobs on the far right. Ok, over and over the mantra is that small business is THE creator of jobs. BUT, if we give tax breaks to the absolute richest, that will create jobs. Cmon now, which is it?
February 16 2011 at 1:07 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyBoehner and his rhetoric are pathetic and have no credibility whatsoever. If "we're broke" then why are we engaged in wars without end in God-forsaken places where no one has asked us to intervene? The Republicans can spend countless billions of dollars on these wars without thought, but we can't spend money on our own people. We send foreign aid to virtually every country on the planet, but we can't afford healthcare for Americans. 60 years after Pearl Harbor we're still in Japan, Korea, Europe, Gaum, everywhere. WHY? The Republicans with Boehner as their leader (or is is Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, and other of their ilk) are ethically corrupt and offer nothing positive for the American people. They care only for their wealthy backers, and they fool no one other than themselves if they think otherwise. Tell me, Mr. Boehner, how laying off Americans will "bring back jobs". When those Americans Mr. Boehner is all to willing to fire lose their jobs, how will they be able to pay the bills to ensure the survival of merchants, car dealers, clothing sotres, etc. Americans are not as stupid as you think, Mr. Boehner.
February 16 2011 at 1:04 PM Report abuse Permalink -5 rate up rate down ReplyWhy don't you ask that same question to the house and senate democrats who overwhelmingly approved both wars?
February 16 2011 at 1:38 PM Report abuse Permalink +2 rate up rate down ReplyThe healthcare issue is twofold. We can't afford it, just like medicare is bankrupting most state governments, and a gov't run healthcare system would make healthcare abysmal for most Americans.
February 16 2011 at 1:42 PM Report abuse Permalink +5 rate up rate down Replyso be it -- we're broke...........yes Mr. Boehner we are broke, the gold melted down at Ft. Knox would not pay the bills but Congress is to blame. The trade deals, the lowered duties in column one allowed US corporations, German, Japanese, Italian et al. corporations to move to NAFTA and free trade countries where they enter their products into the US duty free, unleveling the playing field of US and foreign workers. From 2000 to 2008 alone this country assessed BUT DID NOT collect $4,319,473,520.00 in duties. People say it will bring on a trade war, SO BE IT, there is nothing we can't make in this country!!!!
February 16 2011 at 12:57 PM Report abuse Permalink +10 rate up rate down ReplyBoehner and McConnel have millions to be spent on pet projects in their own states. One military project the Pentagon doesn't even want. Washington only cares about being elected, making money, having power and to hell with the country. If Republicans are in power their states rake in the bucks and ditto with Democrats. Our poor, beautiful country going down the tube. Why not shut down military bases, cut out all foreign aid, and stop the ongoing wars. That is one reason we are in the hole. Millions give to the Blackwater group while they shoot civilians and newsmen. It is a mess!!!
February 16 2011 at 12:57 PM Report abuse Permalink +5 rate up rate down ReplyVicki, if you actually get into touch with reality, you will realize funding the wars is a very small piece of the overall problem. About half of the federal government's budget goes towards social programs like SS, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. When these boondoggles were passed, the Dems told us how wonderful of programs they were and how they would self-fund. Well, you see where we are today, in a fiscal calamity.
