Jeb Bush Boosts Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels as the 'Anti-Obama'

Jeb Bush, brother of one former president and son of another, isn't going to seek the White House for himself next year, he says, but he likes what he's seen so far from Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels.

Daniels, in his second term, is among a slew of Republicans considering a presidential campaign next year.

"Mitch is the only one who sees the stark [economic] perils and will offer real, detailed proposals," Bush told Jacksonville business leaders, according to the Florida Times-Union.

Daniels won rave reviews from some pundits last week for his sobering speech at the CPAC meeting in Washington where he laid out the hard choices facing a nation with a mounting debt. Politics Daily's Walter Shapiro wrote that Daniels offered an "eloquently crafted, intellectually compelling call to arms against the red ink forces of the national debt."

Before winning election as Indiana's governor, Daniels, 61, served as director of the Office of Management and Budget for former President George W. Bush -- Jeb Bush's older brother. Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida, conceded that the diminutive Daniels is not a smooth or dashing figure, but he likes his style.

"He would be the anti-Obama, at least socially," Bush said in the newspaper's account of a private gathering. "He is not good on a teleprompter, but if my theory is right that would work well for him." Daniels, a Midwesterner with an understated sense of humor, also told the conservative group in Washington the next president will have to consider revamping entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

Jeb Bush's good will stopped far short of any endorsement for Daniels, who first must decide whether he is going to take the plunge in 2012. (Update: Daniels wasn't feeling so chipper Thursday. He underwent rotator cuff surgery to repair a tear in his right shoulder, CNN reported. The out-patient procedure isn't expected to sideline him for long; he's scheduled to speak at an Ohio Republican dinner in Cincinnati next Wednesday.)

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.

So, according to Jeb, Daniels would be the "anti-Obama"??? Jeb must have missed that part of Daniels' CPAC speech wherein he spoke of a more equal distribution of wealth the rebuilding of the middle class, and giving those low on the economic ladder a chance to earn more. Does all this sound familiar? It should because those were key points that then-candidate Obama made when he had that exchange with Joe (the plumber) Wuertzelbacher back in 2008. Well, if turning those ideas into policy make Obama a "socialist" then Daniels must be one too. No, the reality is that neither are socialists, but realists who have a clear sense of what supply-side/trickle down economic policy has done to the middle class and those below them.

Too bad Daniels' wife will never let him run for president. I grew up playing with his kids (we lived in the same neighborhood), and she wouldn't even move out of her house on the lakefront to move into the governor's mansion. I'm not sure that anyone who knows his family dynamic expects him to run.

I've read where Daniels is trying to block "Right To Work" legislation. He'll have to get out of bed with the unions before I seriously consider anything he has to say. I won't vote for anyone who's cozying up with the unions, period.

If a candidate emerges with the blunt candor of Christie, the fiscal responsibility of Rand Paul, and the tax policies of John F. Kennedy, my vote would be committed. fairy tales of entitlements leading to sustainable prosperity are... (what would Obama say?) "Those days are over".
