Six Weeks After Shooting, Nation Honors Other Victims

Six weeks after the shooting rampage in Tucson that seriously wounded her, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords says she's getting "better." And those rocked by the tragedy are trying to do the same, responding to it in concrete ways by honoring some of the other victims and survivors.

The name of Judge John Roll, who was one of six people killed in the Jan. 8 attack (14 were injured), will appear on a new federal courthouse in Yuma, Ariz., after President Obama signed a bill Thursday naming the building in his honor. Roll had approved the design of the building, which is scheduled for construction this summer. The 63-year-old was killed when he stopped at Giffords' community event after attending Mass that morning.

Nine-year-old Christina-Taylor Green, born Sept. 11, 2001, was also killed. A Tucson park will be renamed for the young woman whose death, her grandfather says, "woke an awful lot of people up."

Former Philadelphia Phillies player and manager Dallas Green spoke publicly about his granddaughter for the first time at the team's spring training site in Florida this week.

"Most of what's been written and said about her is obviously very true. . . She embodied what's good about kids and what's good about growing up in the United States. Obviously, her interest in politics and going to that function -- being in the wrong place at the wrong time -- hit an awful lot of people hard."

Giffords' community outreach director, Gabe Zimmerman, also killed in the shooting, will have a hiking trail named after him, an honor his father says would suit the 30-year-old who loved the outdoors and helped get state recognition for scenic trails. Zimmerman will also be honored with a scholarship fund started at the University of California, Santa Cruz, his alma mater.

Ron Barber, district director for Giffords, this week announced the creation of a fund to promote programs encouraging civility, respect and understanding, an idea he had while recovering from the gunshot wounds he suffered. Barber made an initial donation to the fund, which will also be supported by a Tucson concert next month featuring Jackson Browne, Alice Cooper, David Crosby, Graham Nash and others.

Barber's wife learned that he was shot when she received a call from the scene, thanks to Giffords' intern Daniel Hernandez, whom Barber asked to see soon after he was out of surgery.

Hernandez, 21, has been credited with helping save Giffords' life by cradling her head and applying pressure to her wound after she was shot by accused gunman Jared Loughner. Hernandez will be honored Saturday as a National Hispanic Hero at the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute annual convention in Chicago.

As for Giffords, she remains at a Houston rehabilitation facility. This week, when asked by her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, how she is doing, she replied, "Better."

Giffords is aware that she was shot, but is unaware of the other injuries and deaths that occurred. On Wednesday, her chief of staff, Pia Carusone, said doctors were keeping such details from her because they don't think it is fair to "tell someone something so tragic" when the person may not yet have the ability to ask detailed questions in response.

The 40-year-old Democrat has been speaking for the last 10 days, and eating. Her rabbi brought her matzo ball soup recently and said she knew all the words to Don McLean's "American Pie," a long and complicated song.

While Giffords recuperates, some of her Democratic colleagues are looking ahead. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) plan to hold a campaign fundraiser for her next month, and others are speculating -- perhaps prematurely -- about a 2012 run for the Senate seat being vacated by Arizona's John Kyl.

Giffords' congressional office continues to work on her behalf, led by 30-year-old Carusone, who has worked for Giffords for a little more than a year.

"We talked about how to respond and what Gabby would want and I know she would want us to get back to work," Carusone told the Manchester Union Leader.

Giffords' husband is back at work at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, preparing for the final flight of the space shuttle Endeavour. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden told the Associated Press that "Giffords would be treated 'like a normal spouse'" if she attends the launch, scheduled for 7:48 p.m. April 19.

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Don't you people understand. This young man is mentally ill. The only blame his parents have is not recognizing it. This is a normal reaction in this country. If your child had cancer, you would get him help. If your child has mental problems, we think, Oh he will change, grow up, get over it, etc. Half of our population has mental health problems. Why are we not addressing this horrible disease. Where is the money for this. Oh, by the way, a lot of it is inherited. So, blame your great great grandparents. Oh, and during your essays on horrible people, remember, be ye kind. Who knows when it will strike your family. A lot of people drink, or take drugs to drown out the voices in their heads. Ask a doctor.

It's about time the other victims are being honored and or mentioned. I have kept all in my prayers. I realize Gabby Gifford's is a high profile person. But all other victims are just as important. In this article the writer called Christina a young women. She is a child. Who will never reach adulthood. A tragic loss for all involved.

I'm sure Chuck Schumer, Wasserman-Schultz, and Gillebrand will be right there with a camera crew if they think they can turn a buck on it, or generate political advantage.
With friends like them, Ms. Giffords is very fortunate to have a supportive spouse and top medical care. I wish her a quick and complete recovery.

Wishing her well should have been all that needed to be posted.

@oldengineera2 ..your entire post (except for the last sentence) smacks of 'using this tragedy to generate political advantage'. No one else has done so, let alone those other people who had nothing to do with this whose names you were so quick to sully. This horrific event hurt and destroyed people from all walks of life and the nation mourns, but it WAS specifically targeted at Gabriele Giffords with those surrounding her considered merely 'collateral damage' by the gunman. SHE was his main target. As such, she does become the focus of the medica coverage. The rest of us mourn every single one of the victims and think of them as equal in this horrific event. No one is turning this to distasteful political advantage except you.

I, too, wish a speedy recovery for Ms Giffords and the families that have been
involved in this tragic event. There are many that have a "lovely lady" raised
within their sphere of living. But, why such a tragic event is given so much
press or air time is beyond my level of understaning. I would like to see more
in depth stories of why this happened. How coould it have been avoided. What inconsistencies occur in peoples lives that create such monstrous attacks within our society. People say family values need to return to our society. I agree, but
such rhetoric is misleading when our entitlement systems our based on non family values. i.e., more children means more entitlements, do drugs and get assistance, be unemployed for too long and get erased from the counts. Where is the old fashioned beliefs of working hard, raising a family by more than one parent, and trying to live by the "Golden Rule". I get frustrated when there is always another
reason is given for such tragedies. Respect for others and for onesself begins at home. Do not blame government, teachers, pastoral leaders for our dregs of society. Take responsibilty for your decisions, knowing there are consequences to your actions. On the other hand, the way our government is spreading the wealth (entitlements) takes away from individual pride of accomplshments. Sensationalism takes a front seat in all venues of today's Media, give us more meat and potatoes. Write of the people who get up and go to work, got to school and are trying to enhance their lives. About those who have had some success and are now giving back by example that it can happen for each of us.

Thw world has become somewhat ugly with the lack of civility and respect to others. It is difficult to understand (if at all possible to understand) what goes through a persons mind to enable them to strike out and hurt so many. We see this in society all around us, and it is not isolated or restricted to any real demographic or area of society.

It is encouraging to see, lately of fact, that so many people are speaking out about the poor choice in behavior of these few. society has changed from the simple life where I was raised, to a much harsher and in many ways, unforgiving, way of life that I observe the children of today being raised.

I am thankful for my wife and her efforts to balance mine and our childrens lifes, with love and respect. I know she achieved her goals as we observe our granddaughter being raised ..... such a lovely lady.

My most sincere prayers to the recovery of Ms. Gabrielle Giffords, and to those that had their lives taken so tragic.

For every child that has a good upbringing. There's probably 1000 kids that don't. And when a kid gets into trouble. You can just hear their parents saying....It wasn't my kid. It was the kid he was running with. And we wonder what is wrong with our society? Gee, lets think about this.
