Reid Rejects House GOP's Plan for Budget Extension, $4 Billion in Cuts

Instead of a government shutdown next week, Congress could be headed for another stopgap budget to allow more time for compromise on sizable cuts in 2011 spending. But a showdown continues to loom.

House Republican leaders are dangling a two-week budget extension to March 18 with $4 billion in reductions in spending, The Hill reports. Senate Democrats are more interested in a one-month plan that would keep spending at current levels.

The action picks up next week when the Senate returns from a week-long Presidents' Day recess and takes up the House-approved continuing resolution that trimmed nearly $61 billion from this year's spending package. President Obama thinks the House version is too severe and has threatened to veto it.

At first blush, Democrats rejected House Speaker John Boehner's offer to keep the trains running on time. "This [House] bill would simply be a two-week version of the reckless measure the House passed last weekend," a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, according to the New York Times. "It isn't going to fool anyone."

Both sides want to escape blame if the current spending plan expires on March 4 without renewal, and the federal government is forced to shut down some operations. In theory, a 12-month budget for the 2011 fiscal year should have been in place last Oct. 1, but disputes over priorities and deficit reduction resulted in a series of temporary extensions.

Those disagreements continue. "Freezing in place the current unsustainable spending levels is simply unacceptable," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said. "And while Republicans are making a genuine effort to cut spending and debt, Washington Democrats can't seem to find a single dime of federal spending to cut, insisting on the status quo even for a short-term spending bill."

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Economists warned not to cut too much too fast for 2011 and 2012 -it will lead to a double dip recession - cut waste but not job creation. The UK conservatives did this and are experiencing negative growth. The gop is doing this to hurt our economy recovery just to get elected in 2012. Also - look at where their cuts are being made and ammendments being made - they are selfserving and for corporations.

Reid is not serving his country so much as his party. Sad that he squeaked by in November to continue to be a flee party spoiler.

"In theory, a 12-month budget for the 2011 fiscal year should have been in place last Oct. 1, but disputes over priorities and deficit reduction resulted in a series of temporary extensions.".................It was my understanding the Lib/Dem controlled WH and Legislature did not even present a budget, probably due too the fact they could not justify their reckless spending of the taxpayers money. No different than the Dems now fleeing their States to avoid addressing the mess they have made in this country.

When the govt shuts down nothing changes except you can't get a passport. With no money I'm not going anywhere so lock the doors for all I care. If they are closed for business they can't spend more money.

Suggestion: Politicians delare their party affiliation when they run for office. Once the election process is over and they are seated in their office, the party designation, republician or democrat should be dropped and they are then simply a mayor, a representative, a senator, etc. This would stop the one side of the aisle against the other bickering that is played out in the media and taints the pure decision making process. Each and every elected official would speak for themselves, their constiutuents and the issues that they represent without the D,R, or I affixed to their name. Every time an elected official speaks to the media they would be forced to address the issue on its face and forced to explain their position on the issue without hiding behind a majority or minority party affiliation.

"too severe"? "reckless"? I think America has realized that over $14,000,000,000,000 of national debt is reckless. I think that America has taken note of Pelosi's failure to pass a FY 2010 budget, and thinks that this years deficit spending of $1.65 trillion is reckless and severe. Obama has tripled the worst year's of Bush's deficit spending, when Bush signed off on Pelosi's spending bills, This is exactly why Democrats took a shellacking. But they still fail to recognize the magnitude of our debt and deficit crisis. It brought down the Soviet Union and it could bring us down too.

Good let the republicans show their true colors that they will do anything to get what they want. Its time hopefully to stand up to them and let them close the government. When Grandma doesn't get her check, maybe the public will see the light, doubtfully, because they did back the republicans backed by US Chamber of Congress's corporate money. They want to cut wall street watchdogs for their masters and planed parethood which helps woman in need and other policys that don't make their masters richer. Good luck to them.

The passage of Obamacare illustrates your point.

With the numerous, and lengthy, vacations, recesses, and "flight from duty," time off that our Fed and State Legislators give themselves, it is obvious these are not full time positions. They were never intended to be full time, and now that THEY have made them so, the taxpayers are getting burned by both ends of the firestick. I wonder if Nevadans are still thrilled with the reinstatement of Reid.

Nevadans have to be elated as they had no logical choice but to send Harry Reid back for more of the best and most productive representation of their best interests.

I'ts just a matter of time before every "grandma's check" stops due to lack of funds. Can someone tell me why if an employee deliberately does not show up for work they are fired for job abandonment but the legislators are not. When did it become acceptable to go into hiding to avoid a part of your job that you don't agree with?
