Fox News Talker Mike Huckabee Insists Obama Grew Up in Kenya

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who is flirting with another presidential campaign, asserted on a New York radio program Monday that President Obama grew up in the African country of Kenya, the homeland of his father.

Obama's childhood was spent in Hawaii and Indonesia. There is no evidence that he spent any significant time in Kenya, although he wrote in his memoir, "Dreams from My Father," that he visited there in 1988 after the senior Obama died in an automobile accident.

Huckabee, who hosts a weekly show on Fox News, said on WOR's Steve Malzberg Show that Obama, "having grown up in Kenya, his view of the Brits, for example, very different from the average American." Asked about the so-called birther dispute -- persistent claims Obama was not born in the U.S. -- Huckabee said, "I would love to know more" about the president's background. "What I know is troubling enough."

He said Obama's decision to remove a bust of Winston Churchill from the Oval Office was "a great insult to the British." But "if you think about it, his perspective as growing up in Kenya, with a Kenyan father and grandfather, their view of the Mau Mau Revolution [uprising against British colonial rule] is very different than ours, because he probably grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather."'

But growing up Obama hardly knew his father; his parents were divorced when he was a toddler and he was raised by his mother and maternal grandparents. Huckabee's comments were reported by the liberal-leaning watchdog website, MediaMatters for America.

Huckabee, a onetime Baptist preacher and former governor of Arkansas, said he was not drawn to the "birther" controversy because if it were true, Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign would have unearthed it in 2008. "And I promise you they would have used it."

An unsuccessful GOP candidate for president in 2008, Huckabee said he would decide on a 2012 race by late spring or early summer. In the meantime, he is promoting a new book called "A Simple Government." Update: A Huckabee spokesman later told CNN the ex-governor had simply misspoken and meant to say that Obama grew up in Indonesia.

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Clearly Obama is a unique figure in US politics. The promise he made to "fundamentally change the United States of America" has worried me since the utterance. How can anyone argue that this President's view of the world has a decided left handed, apologists slant? If he grew up in Podunk, Iowa it does not seem reasonable that he would acquire an anti-imperialist point of view. This President was obviously affected by his time in Kenya and influenced by his father's political leanings. Not to see this is simply to deny the obvious. The real questions become, "How does this play out in the USA? ...And can he be reelected?"

Apparently one should take Huckabee at his word: he would love to know more about Obama's background, He obviously needs the education.

Well, if Huckabee later said he misspoke, then the headline title "insists" is rather misleading, isn't it??

Huckabee is lying that he misspoke. Just saying Obama grew up in Kenya is one thing, but if you read how detailed this comment is, no way did he just misspeak, it was intentional! Here is his full comment.

"if you think about it, his perspective as growing up in Kenya, with a Kenyan father and grandfather, their view of the Mau Mau Revolution [uprising against British colonial rule] is very different than ours, because he probably grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather."'

He insisted, then changed it. Guess it would have been better to not insist, when you don't know.

I think huckabee..has his head up something unclean. One can be born in USA and possessions,, and still be a citizen.. and can live any place in the world.. after that. How many americans are now living overseas, working or retired? have they lost their citizenship??? Wake up youngster, and read the constitution.. Your citizenship is being born via USA ... not where you live afterward. and he wants to be president??? Isn't he Mormon???? How many non citizens are in the Mormon church????? I bet there are more than can be counted on one hand. You sure you want a mormon running this country?? Mormon church is a business more than a religion. They own and control a lot of businesses..and territory. I think their religion should be investigated by the US Government. so there.

If this man cannot get these simple, irreputable facts straight , HOW does he expect us to buy him as a potential Presidential candidate...I want some who can, at least, READ in the White House, let alone have some semblance of deductive reasoning!

Yeah, too bad Obama can only read his teleprompter and thinks America has 57 states (that the number of Islamic countries, oops, Freudian slip); does not know when America developed smart bombs and claimed that McCain dropped them on Vietnamese villagers ( also a glaring stupidity); Obama thinks that a suitable present for the Queen of England is an iPod (with his favorite music, on it, of course) and that a great gift to the Prime Minister of England would be a set of his favorite movies on DVD (wrong system of course - another social faux paux by our idiot in chief); and that it is a good idea to bow to the Japanese PM (another act of a very stupid man); BTW, he thinks that Iran and Venezuela pose no threat to America because in the words of the idiot in chief "they are very small countries". Go ahead and keep supporting this buffoon while the rest of the world laughs at this monkey in the White House.

No matter what might be offered to the right wing loonies who are convinced Obama is a foreigner, they would not be convinced. If they were given precisely what they are demanding they would then insist it's a forgery. They simply hate the man, no matter what because he is a democrat, is still president and is still black.
